  1. Whoever mentioned it before was right: the TBS 1080i picture just looks much better than 720p.
  2. Hey Yankees, take the weekend off and play the games in Miller Park on Tuesday and Wednesday. Looks like some people misjudged the weather pretty badly.
  3. Matt Moore has some of the easiest cheese I've ever seen. Buck talking about the same thing right now. Then there are other guys who look like they're just firing it in there, they get a nice 'pop' and still only hit 93 or so.
  4. Best play of the LDS so far made by a fan in Texas. To steal a Shannon Sharpe line: Tell Gov Perry to call out the National Guard because the Rays are killing the Rangers!
  5. No real surprises there. Doubt it will change for the NLCS.
  6. My understanding is that your roster is set for the series when you exchange lineup cards prior to Game 1 of that series.
  7. Division Series Facts and Figures (Since the changed to seeded home field advantage in 1998) Home Field Advantage: The team with home field advantage has a record of 27-25 in these series. (13-13 in the NL, 14-12 in the AL). Wildcard: The AL Wildcard winner is 8-5 in these series, with 3 of those 8 moving on to the WS. The NL Wildcard winner is 7-6, with 5 of those 7 moving on to the WS. Game 1 Winner: The Game 1 Winner in the NLDS has won 23 series and lost only 3. ALDS: 15-11. Series length: There have been 11 sweeps in the NLDS, 11 4-game series and 4 5-gamers. There have been 10 sweeps in the ALDS, 8 4-gamers and 8 5-gamers. Game 5: There have been only 4 Game 5s in the NLDS. The road team has won 3 of those 4. There have been 8 Game 5's in the ALDS with 5 road winners. There has not been a Game 5 in the NL since 2004. Six of the 8 AL Game 5s occurred from 1999-2003. LCS Length Distribution (League: 4-game, 5-, 6-, 7): AL: 1, 4, 4, 4 NL: 1, 5, 4, 3 =============== Based on this data, and looking at the teams involved this season, I have no idea what is going to happen. Heart is with Tigers and Rays in the AL. Really don't care about the other NL series. Go Brewers.
  8. If I don't get out of the house I'll go nuts, so heading out for some HS football tomorrow night, catch the end of Yanks/Tigers when I get home and then bunker in for the weekend. PIP is a great invention.
  9. http://images.yuku.com/image/png/c7235ad094df86a647b66ae1f1ec9fb98b1e6d6.png This seems like a good place to share this. Five teams graphed from start of season through Game 162: Phillies, Brewers, Cards, Braves, Pirates. Easy to see where the highlight run began (which almost exactly coincides with where the then first-place Pirates fell off a cliff). Presented this way, it's evident that once the Brewers ran away and hid they were never really that close to getting caught. It's also evident that what happened "to" Atlanta was really a lot more of what the Cardinals did for themselves (though the 5 game skid to end the year was the killer).
  10. Gripping = holding on way too tight. Associated with golf, though I've heard it used in baseball and other sports as well. Just generally being too tense, or not able to relax enough to function under a pressure situation.
  11. Expanded playoffs work for me only if: 1) the new format is not disruptive in terms of the continuity of the season for some teams but not others 2) a greater effort is made to balance schedules for teams that are competing for the same 'champion' playoff berth (including some sort of realignment if need be) I guess it's just the nature of American sports to make a big deal out of playoffs and to hugely diminish the accomplishment of being regular season champion (which in baseball is quite a substantial undertaking). In some ways I wish we could dial playoffs back a bit, but that argument has been lost and it's clearly not in line with a lot of American attitudes and desires in any event.
  12. Guessing that it will continue to be frustrating, especially for ticket holders. The powers that be will likely hold off setting Tuesday times until after the AL games are complete on Saturday. Fortunately for Brewer fans (at least in terms of certainty) you have to think that the geography of the situation means that their game on Tuesday will be primetime (or at least after the "regular" work day). That doesn't necessarily work out great for everyone, but at least we have a pretty good idea when it will be. Does anyone know if there will be weekday day games (likely late afternoon, but still "day" in the sense that morning-early evening workers may miss part of the action).
  13. Yes. The game on Sunday with the Broncos is part of the Gold (Milwaukee) Package.
  14. The general public might not fully understand just what a TV monster the NFL, and even the primetime college football game, is. The execs at Turner and MLB know exactly what they are up against in terms of the battle for eyeballs. A whole lot of people will be watching UW/Nebraska on Saturday night. In SEC-land, everyone will be watching Florida/Alabama that same night. And then you have Notre Dame playing Saturday night as well. This doesn't even get into the stuff on Sunday. They have two real options: 1) disregard the conflicts (and likely be beaten in the ratings even in the home markets of some playoff teams), or 2) accomodate the TV audiences the best they can to the inconvenience of the 50,000 or so folks who actually go to the games.
  15. One saving grace is that with only 1 of the Yankees and Sox involved in the post-season this year they don't have to schedule in 4-hour blocks.
  16. There has to be some tension here between a bunch of competing interests. The TV folks want minimal overlap between games. That's what they bargained for in the contract. MLB wants minimal overlap to increase visibility. TV also wants to schedule so as to minimize scheduling conflicts with other programming of local interest. i.e. football. The teams want to play at reasonable times, both in terms of the game at hand and in terms of turnaround for the next day. Fans going to the games want reasonable start times so as to enjoy the game and everything associated with going to the game. In certain instances, fans also want good start times in terms of not having to compete for transit and parking in places where you will have both football and baseball games going on in close physical proximity on the same day (see Philly). Good luck getting it all sorted out. No matter what they do somebody (likely multiple somebodies) is going to be unhappy.
  17. Yo, Greinke, Marcum, Wolf Ax, K-Rod, Saito, Hawkins, Loe, Estrada Fielder, Weeks, Betancourt, Hairston, Braun, Morgan, Hart, Lucroy Kottaras, Counsel, Gomez, Kotsay, Green, Wilson, McGehee I'd go with 10 pitchers. Narveson/Estrada is a toss-up, but I think I take Estrada. He can pitch either long and short out of pen if needed. I don't think Narvy is ideal as a situational lefty, and the Brewers haven't really needed one anyway. I'm more comfortable with one of the regular pressure relievers in the pen than I am with Narvy in an unfamilar situation. I might even leave McGehee out in favor of Schafer who can be used very situationally as a runner (without burning Gomez) or as insurance as a another defensive outfielder. Doubt RR would do that, but it's an idea worth kicking around. Edit: Can't remember when LS came up, so I don't even know if he's eligible. Now that I think about it, he probably isn't.
  18. Is the playoff roster only official at the start of Game1? Doesn't mean that the makeup won't be known before then, but is that correct?
  19. I think tonight was worth not having baseball tomorrow night.
  20. Papelbon and Kimbrel have unfortunate nights. Had to love the line with two outs that there was no way Papelbon was going to let this get away.
