  1. Woah, I dozed off for a couple of minutes and had a weird nightmare. Telly was on the pregame show talking about how great the left side of the infield has been lately. Must have gotten a bad chalupa today at lunch.
  2. Is 3 runs scored a moral victory regardless of result?
  3. I think the big sotry in 2008 was the Cubs. Not that they are small market, but they sort of share that 'underdog' role. (Whether that's a fair depiction is another matter, but the fact is that when the Cubs are in contention the whole 'lovable loser' BS crowds out small market stories). The Brewers were nothing more than a Wildcard, and that was in large part because of CC. CC was the story in Milwaukee, not the Brewers (from a national perspective). Contrast that with the Pirates competing for the division title (at least right now). Also add in the fact that the Pirates were close at the AS Break, the slowest sports news time of the year, and that's a story that gets some traction. So long as they stay in contention the story will stay on the radar, to the extent that baseball does stay on the radar during the NFL news barrage that will be overwheliming next week.
  4. There is only room for one feel-good small market story. Pittsburgh has been bad for 20 years. Milwaukee was in the playoffs a couple of years ago. The Brewers have been a trendy pick since the spring. Pittsburgh is a true underdog. The Brewers have some very well-known players. The Pirates players are unknown quantities to a large degree. Pittsburg, as a city and media market, has closer ties to the east coast media centers. The Brewers are thoroughly midwestern. No brainer as to where the media will steer the sympathies of neutral observers.
  5. Sad, but I think true, joepepsi. Let's look at some of the practical considerations involved here. If they are going to bring Green in, Tuesday would be a great time to do it. They are at home, which is probably preferable to being on the road in terms of bringing in a rookie. They are also starting a stretch of seemingly manageable opponents before facing the Cards to end the homestand. On the other hand, if Melvin is looking outside the organization for a 3B, it's doubtful they bring him up prior to the deadline. Once August starts, if you bring him up almost every game is high pressure situation with the exception of the series in Houston at teh end of the first week in August. Other than that may be the best time to bring him in would be the start of the 4 game series with the Dodgers in the middle of the month. But that doesn't give you a whole lot of time to evaluate him prior to the September call-up period anyway. I just don't think a Green callup is in the offing. I don't even think a Gamel callup is in the offing. The prospect of playing 15 games in August with Yuni and Casey holding down the left side of the infield is almost terrifying. I guess we should just be happy that 8 of those games are at Miller Park.
  6. It is pretty amazing that in a full 30% of their road losses, the Brewer pitching performance was essentially irrelevant. Just did another count that may or may not be of interest. In games the Brewers have lost by 5 or more runs this season, 10 of those losses have occurred on the road versus only 1 at Miller Park. Four of those 10 were also shutouts. So we take the 10 shoutouts and add in the 6 blowouts that were not also shutouts and we are at just under 50% of the Brewers 33 road losses being losses of the type that could be classified (in one sense or another) as non-competitive. Yes, I understand that is probably an overly broad assertion but it probably lines up pretty well with fan perceptions.
  7. Yep. I don't know what to make of how I feel about this team in terms of the big picture when this road trip has exceeded expectations so far and I still don't feel that great about it.
  8. The Elias guys need to look up the Brewers ratio of shutouts/road losses if this ends like it seems it will. It has to be near some sort of record for futiity, especially when juxtaposed with their home run production and their place in teh standings.
  9. Yeah, a bunt wouldn't be terrible there, but with Braun up people would have flipped about it. Given his leg still isn't 100% I wouldn't have had a problem with the bunt, but I'm pretty sure I would be in teh minority.
  10. I apologize for the remark jinxing Braunie's AB. Language - PA
  11. In the absence of a score this will be the Brewers 10th road shutout this season? Is that correct? I thought someone posted earler this road trip that the shutout in Denver was #9.
  12. I don't know which is more maddening: Greinke never giving in and throwing a ball or Doug Davis never giving in and throwing a strike.
  13. Am i the only one that wants Greinke to swing the bat here?
  14. Try holding your hand up by your mouth like that. If you extend that finger you don't take a knuckle in the nose or upper lip. Just more comfortable that way. Lots of other ways to hold your hand, but I think that's as good an explanation as any.
  15. No, he wasn't flipping anyone off. He was just holding his finger strangely watching the game. I saw the shot, but he wasn't flipping anyone off. It's obvious from the context of the video that there is no story there.
  16. Saito has to be player of the game. Plush was nice, but the game is OVER without Saito gutting that out. Simply didn't give up.
  17. There are a number of Fangraphs tonight that look like calls for a defibrillator. None more impressive than this game's.
  18. Baseball is a funny, fluky game. There have been so many little things that have changed this game immensely.
  19. My final point on the Nrvy thing, reiterating the point made earlier: If Narvy has a 2-0 lead with a pitch count of 87 and he's throwing a no-hitter there is no way he comes out without allowing at least one base runner. Other than it not being a no-hitter the situation isn't really any different. So, as long as somebody tells me that the smart move in a no-hitter would also have been to bring in K-Rod, I'll be OK with the move. Otherwise I think it's fair to at least question it.
  20. This great escape will obviously spark a 22-game winning streak.
