  1. A note on Morton and Locke. They were two of the pieces (along with Gorkys Hernandez) picked up in the Nate McLouth trade with the Braves. McLouth posted an .810 OPS in 2007, .853 in 2008 and .819 in 2009 with the Pirates before he was traded. He did fairly well for the Braves in 2009 and then finished with a .620 OPS in 2010 and .677 in 2011. So the Pirates got all the value they could out of McLouth and then traded him at his peak value and picked up solid assets in return that are still helping the team today. I'm with TheCrew in that I'm envious of what Huntington has done with the Pirates and that I hope they do well. They certainly look like they're on their way to a third straight playoff appearance.
  2. Nathan Kirby will be starting tomorrow for Virginia tomorrow at 2 pm Central Time on ESPN2 so set your DVR's.
  3. Neither are really young at this point. Both 26.
  4. Not surprising at all. The guys that we're willing to sell other teams don't want and the pieces other teams actually do want aren't available.
  5. We were making fun of Lloyd McClendon a few weeks back for keeping Rodney as the Mariners closer even though he was horrible because "there were no better options." Well after what I saw last night I'd like to give McClendon some credit. The Mariners were up 2-0 going to the top of the 9th (King Felix vs Mad Bum!) and Carson Smith, a RHP has been their closer lately. So obviously you bring in Smith, right? Wrong! The first two batters of the inning were Brandon Belt and Brandon Crawford, so what does McClendon do? He brings in a lefty Charlie Furbush to get the first two batters. Furbush retires both, McClendon then gets Smith to face Duffy and picks up the one batter save. I was amazed. That was awesome and managers need to do that more often.
  6. Players on the 40 man roster I would DFA before Wang. Broxton Cotts Kintzler (probably can't because of DL) Centeno Clark Perez Schafer Lohse Yeah, we can keep holding out hope that Lohse will turn it around and get us something of value. Or we can keep a 28 year old career minor league 1B who can barely OPS .800 in Colorado Springs. Or a 28 year old outfielder who currently has an OPS of .611 in Colorado Springs. But it doesn't really make sense to keep these guys on the 40 man, especially over a guy like Wang, does it? Especially when at minimum 20% of our 40 man roster is complete crap with no future on our next competitive team. Like I said. Picking up Dominguez is fine.
  7. My problem isn't that we picked up Dominguez. He's a fine stopgap for a year or two with maybe a little upside. My problem is we have so much old, no value crap on the 40 man roster and we may have gotten rid of a guy who, even if the chance is small, might have a future with the Brewers the next time we're ready to compete.
  8. Why? Dominguez is horrendous. There are several players on the 40 man that I would get rid of before Wang. Many on the major league team. Another short-sighted move. We spent almost a year with Wang in the majors so we could keep him as a development piece and then only allowed him to develop for two months in the minors before tossing him to the curb.
  9. The problem is that out of those 5 we might be willing to move 2 of them.
  10. And this will determine home field advantage in the World Series. They need to do one of two things. Either leave fan voting out of it and take the best players (obviously not 9 outfielders or something) but the best group of players at their positions or my preferred option, stop with this farce that this exhibition game determines home field advantage for the championship. They completely overreacted to the 2002 all-star game. Instead of allowing players back in and just playing at half speed until some team "won" they had to stop the game for some reason. Even if they just keep going and throw like 50 mph meatballs to the plate and some team wins that way, it's talked about for maybe a week. The rules are tweaked a little so they prevent it from happening again and everyone just moves on.
  11. Who? Teams will just wait like they did with Suppan and Wolf. Nobody is giving up anything for him, they'll just wait until we release him and take their chances on signing him then if they want. If someone else does, it's not like they're going to be missing out on something great and he's definitely not a player that you go after to make sure you get him so other teams can't.
  12. I would love to see Infante's sub .500 OPS (seriously, not a typo) start or even just get voted into the all-star game.
  13. I get that we would most likely have to eat money if we're trading Braun but if we're eating nearly 30% of his remaining contract (which is what taking back Niese and Cuddyer would mean) I would definitely be looking for something better than Montero and Plawecki in return.
  14. Nice! You must say everything perfectly! You know how many different ways people say different words? Yes, people have accents. No accent says amateur with a d to my knowledge.
  15. Hey Brian. How about you stop saying "amader" and say amateur like a normal person.
  16. Those are the worst community chest/chance cards in Monopoly.
  17. I thought Lou Palsmo would be our catcher of the future.
  18. I think the money he's owed next year, plus his buyout impacts his value more. A lot of teams aren't looking for relievers signed beyond the current year.
  19. Yeah, I'm sure a team will be willing to trade the value of a 1st round pick for Lohse.
  20. Not a bad strategy either. Go to all of them and say "We're offering you this much along with these other players. There's only enough money for one of you. Whoever takes it first, gets it." See if one of them blinks and you get yourself a top prospect past the 10th round. If none of them take it, oh well. You probably weren't going to get a productive big leaguer at that point anyways.
  21. Took Nick Kingham's brother in the 39th round. Laughing so hard at all the unsignable guys we're taking.
