  1. There is no reason a rebuild has to be for 5 or 6 years with only a two year window of winning. The Brewers made it a window by trading prospects for players that were only under control for two more years. Or half a year in Sabathia's case.
  2. This interview with these kids is worse than the actual game.
  3. I think I'd wait for more than half a season with a winning record before I claim how well it worked for them. Especially the Cubs who didn't exactly get there solely through sucking for years on end. Buying Lester in the free agent market has something to do with it too. Bryant, Soler, trading Cashner for Rizzo, trading Scott Feldman for Jake Arrieta, trading Samardzija for Russell. It's like some of you don't want to admit that taking a step back to take two steps forward can actually work.
  4. No, you don't have to try to win. Teams in every sport all the time don't try to win intentionally to get better players for the future. The Astros and Cubs are two recent examples in MLB and it worked pretty well for them.
  5. Yeah but what did it get us? We didn't make the playoffs either year. We didn't capitalize on his value by trading him and it cost us a 1st round pick.
  6. Even if he did mean that, he's still wrong because 1st rounders Lawrie, Jeffress and Odorizzi were traded to bring the Brewers Marcum and Greinke who got the team within two games of the World Series. So while the players themselves didn't impact the Brewers, the players they were traded for did, at least for a year.
  7. Lawrie and Odorizzi aren't busts. They were traded, that doesn't make them busts. Jungmann is looking like he could be a decent mid rotation option. Obviously if you're picking at 12 you might hope for a little more than that but that's not a player I would classify as a bust. At least not yet.
  8. Are you serious? Lohse is no different than Suppan or Wolf who we released. You could maybe get a Delmonico type prospect for Broxton if he starts pitching better. Garza we're going to have to kick in quite a bit of money. Teams aren't going to take on his contract and hope that he bounces back. Ramirez could get something decent if he stays on his hot streak for a while.
  9. Blue font? There's a reason he was on waivers.
  10. Um, no. Just to interject some facts...he did not get us Ben Sheets or Prince Fielder. Melvin became Brewers GM on September 26, 2002. Fielder was drafted by the Brewers in June of 2002 by then GM Dean Taylor. And Sheets? Sheets was drafted in 1999, before Melvin was even a fart in the wind in Milwaukee. I was talking about Jack Z. I know GM's have little to do with the draft.
  11. Scouting director and GM are pretty much apples and oranges, so why even compare what Jack did as a scouting director to what he's doing as GM? He got the Brewers Weeks, Hardy, Hart, Fielder, Braun, Gallardo, Odorizzi, Cain, Sheets, Brantley, Lucroy and Lawrie in the draft. That's probably close to as good as it gets. The one move that I keep going back to with Melvin that just continues to baffle me is the Carlos Lee trade. At minimum we get a pick back for him and he goes and trades him and Cruz (say what you want about how long it took him to become a regular in the majors, he was the 8th best prospect in our system the year he was traded) and all he got back was Kevin Mench, Francisco Cordero and Laynce Nix. That was a complete miss at the time and it looks even worse now. Any GM can trade their top prospects for pitchers like Sabathia, Marcum and Greinke as long as their prospects are good. That's not some major oh look at how smart he is kind of deal.
  12. Isn't this the optimism thread? Hooray for Parra and Ramirez helping boost their trade value - hope they can keep up this hot streak for the next three weeks (or until they are traded). Seems like when you're trying to throw it back in posters' faces everything is up for grabs.
  13. Yay for being incredibly mediocre if you discount the few weeks where we were incredibly terrible, I guess?
  14. It's pretty useless winning in the grand scheme of things.
  15. Sure but speed does matter, especially when there's no deception. Fiers can get by because of deception, Burgos can't. If you're throwing 88, you have to have pinpoint control and command to get major league hitters out, especially with average secondary stuff. He's going to be 28 in a month. Maybe he can hook on with another team somewhere but we have younger and much more interesting arms that are major league ready that I'd rather see pitch than Burgos.
  16. He was bad when he got here with pretty bad stuff. There are several options I'd rather have pitching than him. Even if Garza and Lohse are gone. Peralta, Nelson, Jungmann, Fiers, Cravy, Thornburg etc.
  17. The Cardinals have fired their scouting director. So much for the hack being done or only known by low level personnel.
  18. Moreno is insane, so I don't really put the free agent signings on him. A couple of good looking trades though. Mark Trumbo for Tyler Skaggs and Hector Santiago. Howie Kendrick for Andrew Heaney.
  19. HR derby would be a million times better if anyone but Chris Berman was calling it.
  20. They were 4th in defensive efficiency last year. To take the next step they need to drastically improve their offense, which was 26th.
  21. I think it's probably both but more Mark than Doug, which as you said is a much bigger problem than it just being Doug. If it's just Doug he can be fired and we can find another guy. If it's Mark, we're unfortunately stuck until he sells, much like Kohl.

  23. I know a lot of you don't like him but Keith Law said this in his chat yesterday. Fred Garvin (NYC) Keith, is there any hope for the Brewers. I know you liked their draft, but what can they realistically do to restock the roster and farm system yet this year via trade, and how aggressive do you think they should be in that regard? Klaw (2:28 PM) Trade everybody. Segura, Braun, Gomez, Aramis, Garza, Lohse, any reliever. Ship them all out for the best possible returns, near- or long-term. And follow the Astros' general path in talking honestly to the fan base about what's happening. You can sell your fans on a rebuild. They're smarter than teams often think, as long as you're managing your messages. Completely agree with this. You can't just go into a rebuild and say nothing to the fan base but if you communicate to them that you're going to build up the farm system and keep salary flexibility for trades that may come up (they could now even elude to the Toussaint deal) fans will at least understand. They may not like it but they'll understand where you're coming from and why you're doing it.
  24. Here's the audio that Brian relayed from Mark last night. https://www.facebook.com/TheBillMichaelsShow/videos/vb.109681869072477/1014015791972409/?type=2&theater
