  1. Were the Brewers smart to keep Ben Sheets despite his propensity to miss games, which well may have proven crucial in this race, or were the games he actually pitched in too valuable to give up? Were the Brewers ever considering not keeping him? Should Yovanni Gallardo, arguably the future of the franchise in the rotation, have been extended beyond his prescribed innings limit? Well he hasn't gone past it yet, and if we don't make the playoffs, he won't go significantly over. I think if anyone can take on a little extra load it is Gallardo. Should we have given up Will Inman, Steve Garrison and Joe Thatcher for Scott Linebrink? Tough to answer until a couple more seasons have gone by, but I like that Melvin got good relief help. Linebrink has been about as good as expected. Did not bringing up Ryan Braun at the start of the season have any impact on this team? It was nice having solid defense at that point in the season with JJ and Prince carrying the offense. Has Ned Yost cost this team a playoff spot with his moves? I'd lay the blame mostly on the starting pitching during our second half swoon and... How many games has the bullpen cost this team? ... on the bullpen giving up some ample leads. Every bullpen is going to blow leads, but ours managed to blow some big ones. If we had held 5 of those 16 3-run leads we blew, we'd be comfortably in first by 4 games. Hard to blame Ned for the bullpen blowing big leads. I can understand not liking many of his moves this season, I've yelled thru my television at him several times, but as was said, there's no way his moves directly cost us anything more than a couple games IMO. Not pinch-hitting for Mench against Dempster didn't directly cost us the game, as Jenkins in that situation (by the numbers) would succeed less than 1 out of 10 times more than Mench. I'm not saying that it wouldn't have been the right move, but I just don't think it's a decision that we can point to and say "that cost us a win." Not to mention, managers are "allowed" to go against numbers when they feel it is the right situation ie. if Jenkins was under the weather or not swinging all that well etc... I'm not on the pro-Yost bandwagon (as if there were one), but a change in managers can have negative effects, and Yost knows our players and the players know him.
  2. Jenkins has to be PH for right there. This is why we have 36 players on the team right now. %#%$+% Ned.

  4. I probably would've flipped Hall and Miller, but I'm guessing Yost doesn't want to mess with the success Hall had there last night. The new cure-all for struggling hitters: bat them 8th!
  5. Chad Moeller 2005: .206 .257 .367 .624 Johnny Estrada 2007: .281 .300 .403 .703 yeesh, I thought Estrada's OBP was bad this season!
  6. I highly recommend the (Bois) Brule River at Brule, WI (near Superior). I can definitely see the potential for kayakers on the Brule, especially when the water is high. My dad, brothers and I have fly fished that river since I was a kid. For many years, my grandpa had a tent camper permanently parked in Port Wing next to that motel, looking right over Lake Superior. oh and this Tony's pepperoni pizza is certainly not bugging me.
  7. Yeah, I would've pointed out the decrease of emphasis in public schools on geography and the increase of emphasis on economics/business as a reason. Geography isn't one of those "tangible" subjects that are going to lead to a career unless you plan on doing something that specifically deals with international travel or affairs. Thus, in America, it is de-emphasized. Either that or I'd have tried to use "such as" as a verb.
  8. Just ign the players who are performing well to multi-year contracts and trade away the players doing poorly. Simple as it gets. It's working well so far for Zambrano and the Cubs http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/tongue.gif
  9. The ump was totally fooled on that strike three to Hart. It was literally 6 inches off the plate; one of the worst calls I've seen and it had to come in a high leverage situation. Yost totally should've been out there in the ump's ear, of course the Cubs started up their 7th inning stretch festivities immediately.
  10. rickie since 8/18... not to mention his 9 game hitting streak 424 avg...548 obp...606 slg...1.154 ops Cut him, he's obviously a bust. That said, welcome back Woogie and go Brewers!
  11. vs RHP 2B Weeks RF Hart 1B Fielder 3B Braun LF Jenkins CF Hall C Estrada SS Hardy P vs LHP 2B Weeks RF Hart 1B Fielder 3B Braun CF Hall LF Mench C Estrada SS Hardy P the only sensible lineup in my mind http://static.yuku.com//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif

  13. What is the owner doing right about now? Sipping a glass of sherry, twisting his mustache and counting his heaps of money http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  14. I just think Gallardo is too valuable to the Brewers in upcoming seasons to risk injury. He hasn't even really pitched well 3 of his last 4 starts which makes me lean even further toward holding him to his limit.
  15. Youkilis last season? I know he led off and hit in the power spots from game-to-game, but not sure if he hit 4th at all.
  16. The more innings you heap on Gallardo this season, the more likely it is that he gets hurt. If Gallardo gets fatigued and is still pitching late this season over his limit, he is more likely to get hurt down the road. It might be just one start too many that causes a brief change in mechanics in order to pitch while fatigued which could lead to an injury that costs us a year or two (or more) of Gallardo. The limit isn't an arbitrary number: it's representative of a modest increase from last season in order to protect a young pitcher. We've known about this limit all season. We all want Gallardo to throw as much as possible this season, but don't pretend that having Yo throw significantly over his limit will be entirely inconsequential. I'm not saying his arm will fall off as he opens up his 176th inning of the year, but the odds for injury increase if he goes too long.
  17. We might as well have started Jeffress from day one and thrown him 200+ IP. There's no reason to build up his stamina.
  18. Gallardo thread. This is the thread about limiting Gallardo's innings and why GMs and managers would do this.
  19. Not sure if this has been posted anywhere, but I found this quote from Mike Maddux very interesting (also included relevant text - found at milwaukeebrewers.com): The team could face a difficult decision with Gallardo as it creeps later into the season and toward a potential playoff series. He is only 21 years old and has already pitched 145 innings between the Minors and Majors this season -- 10 innings shy of his total from all of last year. Ideally, the Brewers cap young pitchers at 20-25 innings above their total from the previous season, though Gallardo is on pace to exceed that unofficial limit. "You draw up ideal programs," Maddux said. "But your true ideal program is to win games and play in the postseason. I think that might supersede the programs. If you can blend those two things, you definitely do it." Maddux seems to think the Brewers may be willing to throw Gallardo out there past his innings limit. I think it would be a mistake if they went much over that limit.
  20. As far as hitting doubles, I don't seem to have much problem, even going down the line. Slower runners obviously are tougher. I think the hitting part of the game is really tough to get down. Pitching seems a bit easy too, but I rarely have games that get out of hand and the scores are usually low, though I do put up big innings also. As for making money in owner mode, there are ways. I had to dump ALL of my high salary guys, replace them with prospects and play my home games in Miller Park (not my created one) to boost ticket sales. No one with a salary over 1 mil per year stays.
  21. Suppan was probably misconstrued as an innings eater when he should've been labeled as guy that makes every start. I guess if he only gets to 195 IP I'll survive.
  22. One thing that sucks is that guys like Hart, Hall, Weeks, Fielder and Hardy are on the game. But they are not very good. I know. I ran through a full season with those guys in the lineup even though their ratings sucked, but the next season Rickie and Prince's ratings jumped a lot due to getting regular playing time.
  23. Good post. I've seen so many ripping Yost for this but I figured it was pretty standard that sometimes you have to warm up a guy that you won't end up using that night. Sometimes it's unavoidable.
