Movies that make your brain hurt!

Thanks guys for reminding me to watch Inland Empire. One of these years someone has to talk Lynch into adapting a Philip K. Dick book.

Videodrome is a movie that makes my brain hurt. Thematically I get it and I think it's very creepy and effective, but the plot leaves me confused. Or at least it did last time I watched it, which was some time ago.

I also liked the ending to no country for old men. I think the Coen brothers do that a lot. Make movies that are more "open to one's own interpretation." This leads some people to the conlclusion that they "just don't get it." However, no country for old men and Fargo were more defined and left slightly less open to interpretation then past movies. This leads to the happy medium you need to win Oscars. Provacative yet popular. They have to reach the medium where the movie is open to interpretation, but people can still talk about it and aggree on many things.

I rented Donnie Darko for the first time a year ago, and watched it 3 times in the week I had it so I think I at least have a decent grasp on it. Definitely a bit confused after the first two views, and even still a little after the third. I'll agree with Eternal Sunshine a bit, although that's an excellent movie.

I'm embarrassed to mention some of the movies that I can not follow. One would be the Matrix. I tried watching it on cable once and turned it off after about 40 minutes, completely lost.

Then there are movies that I understand the plot and the overall story, but certain parts I can't follow...for example, some of the fast talking tough cop scenes in The Departed. Nobody talks like that in real life.

I love the Godfather, but I'll never understand the families and the relationships of the various families...whether it's the Godfather, Sopranos, or any mob film.

Mullholland Drive, I agree. The intermixing of reality, fantasy seemed to punch me in the gut a few times. Took me a bit to figure it out what the heck was going on, and why doesn't the DVD have chapters?

I love Donnie Darko, it's worth the price of admission simply for the Smurfs conversation. After all, whats the point of it all.. if you .. I've said enough. I still think that Drew Barrymore was the only horrible part of that film, I know she was the producer but I think her acting job stunk. But I enjoyed the concept... and Donnie choice at the end.

No Country was good, TLJ character realizes he's.. well.. the old man now.

The movie that really makes my brain hurt is Pi. (guess I should learn how to make the symbol). I took what happened completely different then what my buddy got from the film, it's just.. weird.

Usual Suspects is a big one. i've seen it a bunch of times so i get it now, but every time i recommend it, the person comes back to me going "ok, so what about....."

Schizopolis, Steven Soderburgh's film about language and communication. I guess it's more of a movie that I understand but don't get - if that makes any sense. It was so tough to watch for me. The friend of mine that recommended it (it's his favorite movie) didn't seem to look into as deeply as I did, I tried to pick it apart, find the themes, etc. After watching it and thinking it through I knew I needed to see again, but I can't make myself sit through it. It's unwatchable for me a second time, but I know it would be beneficial.
