I can't remember when an entire crew of umps was as bad as they were for this series, but at least they've been equally bad.

I don't see how you would call the umps bad in this last case. Seeing the bat strike the ball a second time is just about the last thing a home plate umpire would be able to do on that play.

Len Kasper just read the rule, and it was the right call. If a player hits the ball with his bat while it's in fair territory, he's out.

I had thought that Theriot fouled the pitch off, but after seeing the replay, the ball was in fair territory.

 

Len Kasper pulled out the rulebook and came to the conclusion that it was the right call, and Brenley was forced to eat crow...nice. Didn't stop him from going on a tangent about how MLB is getting close to becoming the NFL with all the ump meetings on close calls.
