Brewers in on Gagne? - Final: to Boston

This was just posted on Rotoworld....

The Cubs reportedly still have a shot at acquiring Eric Gagne, who could be used as a closer over Ryan Dempster.

The Journal News' Peter Abraham believes the Red Sox and the Cubs are the favorites, with the Red Sox offering David Murphy and Kason Gabbard. If Boston moves Gabbard, it means Jon Lester would get to stick around as the team's fifth starter.

If we don't get him, I sure as hell hope the Cubs don't get him.

If they want help at 1st, would throwing Dillon in the deal help?

Or Brad Nelson...

But, as someone coincidentally just posted on the Minor League Forum, it would be nice to have him around next year...

Nelson would be a throw-in to any deal, Dillon would be an even bigger throw-in, with all due respect to both of those players. Meaning, I doubt their inclusion would really help all that much, unless the Rangers GM is all about getting those extra nuggets.

Evan Grant is on Charlie Steiner's XM show right now from Arlington. Teixeira and Mahay still have not left the hotel in Texas, so that deal is not yet finalized. It is Grant's understanding that the Teixeira deal not being finalized is holding up any possible Gagne deal right now.

Grant also reported that one of the most "intriguing" trade rumors involves the Brewers' Tony Gwynn going to Texas in a Gagne deal. Then, his cell phone connection broke up. When Charlie got him back, he changed the subject.

The Texas/Atlanta deal is done pending physicals.

Red Sox Close To Acquiring Gagne

According to Ken Rosenthal, the Red Sox are the winner of the Eric Gagne sweepstakes pending Gagne's consent and a review of medical records. Rosenthal says Gagne might share the closer role with Jonathan Papelbon; it would not be shocking to see Papelbon become the setup man for the rest of the year.

No word on which prospects went to Texas yet.

From Rotoworld:

The Red Sox and Rangers have agreed to an Eric Gagne deal, pending Gagne waiving his no-trade clause, sources told FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

It's very possible that Gagne will block the deal, though the Red Sox could try to sway him by guaranteeing the remainder of his $3.625 million bonuses for games finished. Rosenthal doesn't say who will go the other way, though David Murphy and Kason Gabbard keep getting mentioned. Joaquin Benoit could close for Texas until Akinori Otsuka returns. Jul. 31 - 1:59 pm et

Right, but apparently the physicals are not complete, because Teixeira and Mahay are not even on their way to Atlanta yet.

Gordon Edes (Boston beat reporter) on XM now. He says it is still premature to call this a done deal. He says there are a lot of things to get done first, and then he only listed 2 things:

1. Needs to waive his no trade clause

2. Needs to be compensated for incentive clauses that he will have little or no chance to reach

I'm pretty indifferent about this, it would be nice to the Brewers land him though.

What ever happens, it's nice to see the Crew wheeling and dealing -to stay in first place- at the trade deadline.
-I used to have a neat-o signature, but it got erased.

Jayson Stark is saying nothing new on the Gagne front yet, and the Brewers are still just as much in it as Boston. They made it seem as if Dye to Boston was done, essentially freeing up Gagne to the Crew.

I don't know the reasons for the Red Sox being on Gagne's no-trade list, but I can't imagine someone turning down an extra $3.625 million (or, technically, whatever portion of his incentives that he wouldn't be able to earn with Boston) to play only a couple months with a team. A team, for that matter, who is the favorite to win the World Series.
