Brewers considering Jermaine Dye

I believe Grant Ballfour has some experience closing in the minors.

And Balfour has sucked in the majors. I'd rather let Shouse close and that's saying something.

2008 closer is named Coco Cordero.

Honestly I like the idea of the Brewers going out and getting Dye for T-Bow and Parra. Nothing wrong with trying to get a better stick with two guys that can be replaced internally.

How are they going to pull that one off? The fact that they traded Inman makes me seriously think they are going to do the absolute best they can to extend Sheets.

Cordero's gone, and I think Turnbow can step in there fine.

I think the brass likes Parra more than most fans have realized. I thought that before, but now with Inman gone, I just don't see Manny being dealt at this point.

Jenkins, Graffanino, Miller, and Linebrink won't return, and Koskie and the cash to the Dodgers won't be on the books (Dessens/Clark deal), which frees up roughly $16-17 million. If Mench is gone, we've pared almost $20 million off the payroll, allowing us to lock up Fielder and Hardy, almost double Cordero's salary, and extend Sheets with a payraise, all without dramatically increasing payroll.

My options now

Trade Otsuka for Gwynn JR

Trade Turnbow and a prospect for Dye

C: Estrada/Miller

1B: Fielder/ Graffinino

2B: Weeks/ Graffinino/ Counsel

3B: Braun/ Counsel

SS: Hardy/ Graffinino

LF: Hart/ Jenkins

CF: Hall/ Gross

RF: Dye/ Mench

Closer: Cordero

Set Up: Otsuka

7th Inning: Linebrink

6th inning: Villanoeva

Thoughts?

Dye?

No thanks, I think the outfield is going to be addressed in the off-season. I don't see anyone knocking the doors down for Jenkins, Mench, or Gwynn.

^^ I agree, I really don't see Melvin going out and adding anyone else besides another starting pitcher (If one comes available.). From what I've seen our GM really has no ambition of getting anyone who is struggling to help a team get to the next step.

I dont really believe in the Gwynn for Otsuka deal... Look what we ACTUALLY paid for Linebrink? Otsuka should be worth more than that...

Sorry if that was already posted, but it's a recent article that gives a background on Dye this year. Nice to note that he has hit .333 since the AS break.

I'm not sure if I like the idea of the Brewers going after him or not. I do feel the offense needs a boost, and acquiring an outfielder is the only real option at this point.

Actually no, the best option would most likely be getting a rental 2B. Dye just isn't that good. Jenkins has been a better player over his career where Dye has been the model of inconsistancy and Dye and Jenkins are the same age.

I would say that Jenksins is also inconsistance over his career when you break it down.

You can't say that either. Dye has been pretty awesome the last couple of years.

Just guessing, but I think he's a second half player. And he improves the outfield big time.

Couldn't Dye replace Weeks? Hall moves to second and Hart to center.

Hart

Hardy

Braun

Fielder

Dye

Jenkins

Hall

Estrada

Me likey.

Unless Otsuka has Tommy John surgery, which I saw rumored somewhere today (looking for the link).

Just saw an update from Ken Rosenthal that the Crew is interested in Dye, but Williams is asking for Turnbow or Parra. MLB Rumors.com says "that seems reasonable". Yikes. I'm not sure I'd want to give up either one for 2 months of Dye.

Edit: Sorry, maybe this has been stated already in the thread - just realized that update may have been a day or two old.

I would guess that the Crew would get Dye to sign at least a one year extension. If this year is an abberation, he only want a one year deal (to prove himself).

Jenks, Hart, and Dye would be an outstanding defensive outfield.

Thia might be the very reason Linebrink is on the team, so we could deal Turnbow. Or, maybe they are dangling Linebrink instead, who knows?

I think people here are vastly under-rating Dye. He was an AL MVP candidate last year. Yes, he's having a down year, but a change of scenery could be exactly what he needs. I wouldn't be happy to have to give up Parra or Turnbow, but there is no question in my mind that Dye would be an offensive upgrade over Jenkins.

That said, if I remember right, Dye wouldn't even visit Milwaukee when he was a free agent a few years ago after the Brewers were showing interest in him. He doesn't want to be here. So, I don't want him here either, especially if it means giving up Major League-ready pitching.

But in reality, very few free agents "want" to come here. Winning might change some of that, but you can't blame him to much for not wanting to waste his time visiting a team he had zero interest in playing for at the time. He declined to even entertain the Brewers offer, that it. Thats the business side of things. It sucks, but it is what it is.

I take waaaaay more exception to a guy like Ken Griffey Jr who has gone out of his way - on more than one occasion - to slam the city of Milwaukee itself. You want to talk about a guy that "doesn't want to be here", it's Griffey. Thats why I laugh whenever I see a rumored deal for Griffey. He hates the city. His wife hates the city. And why he needs to mention it more than once (or even once) I don't know.

Buster Olney just mentioned that a three team trade was on the table involving Dye, the Red Sox and the Brewers but that it fell apart. I think the Red Sox were getting Dye but I dont know what the Brewers were giving or getting.
