It's the 4th inning, runners on 1st and 3rd, two outs, and a 2-2 count. And what happens next appears to be a 3-run, 3-base error on the catcher; despite the fact that the homeplate umpire made the out call and the batter began to walk back to the dugout.

It's all in Japanese, but you can pretty much get the gist of what's going on.

 

What's your ruling on this?

Heads up play by the batter, but I think he's out the second he leaves the box and heads towards the dugout, as he's out of the baseline.

609(b) The third strike called by the umpire is not caught, providing (1) first base is unoccupied, or (2) first base is occupied with two out; Rule 6.09(b) Comment: A batter who does not realize his situation on a third strike not caught, and who is not in the process of running to first base, shall be declared out once he leaves the dirt circle surrounding home plate.

 

You can't see for sure but it doesn't look like he took enough steps to leave the dirt circle.

I'm guessing that batter has never been accused of using roids.

If the ump calls him out, he's gone.

 

Whether he should've called him out is beside the point. It happened, and you can't fault the defense for going back to the dugout.

He asked the 1B ump for help and then signaled the out (not just strike 3). Looked like the inning should have been over. The only thing I could think happened is that the ump misread the 1B umps' call and incorrectly signaled an out.

isnt this the same argument as the doug eddings / aj pierzynski play in the playoffs a couple years ago?

 

EDIT: after watching the play yet again, it seemed like the umpire asked for help on the swing, then confirmed that the batter swung.

 

it also does not look like the batter ever left the dirt...but may have came darn close.

The umpire asked for help down the 1st base line, and then confirmed that the batter did swing for strike three. The signal that the ump made may appear ambiguous, but that fist pump is his standard strike three call. You can see it well on his strikeout call in

clip, especially on the second hitter.

 

The ensuing discussion was whether the batter ran outside the circle (he didn't) and whether the catcher made the tag like he claimed he did (clearly he didn't).

 

The three runs scored on the play made the difference in the game, as the final score was 6-4.

I'm curious about where the ball ended up. If it entered the dugout or the stands, the batter would not have been able to advance all the way around the bases; of course, it also depends on when the ball might have exited the playing field as well.

Isn't there a difference between a strike signal and an out signal? i thought the ump signaled out.

I don't know how I feel about the umps getting mics to describe their calls!
