Hawkins activated, Kottaras outrighted, McClendon optioned; Morgan DL'd, Boggs' contract purchased

Just to clarify, is it certain that Kottaras cleared waivers? I see that McCalvy mentioned Kottaras will join Nashville, but is it implicit from that that he cleared?

I love Plush, but think this may be a blessing in disguise. Here's to hoping Boggs gets the bulk of the starts until Hart returns (although here's hoping that's only a couple games) and proves to be an upgrade over both Almonte and Kotsay...although I'm not holding my breath on him keeping a roster spot over Kotsay once everyone's healthy no matter how deserving of it he is.

This really isn't so bad.
Blasphemer! How dare you rag on Mr. Plush! Mods, feel free to exercise the ban hammer. We cannot stand for this blatant disregard for Plushdamentals.

The reason it's not bad has nothing to do with Plush. I hate not having him available. The reason it's not bad is because Boggs will come up and prove he's better than Almonte. So we'll dump Almonte when Plush returns in about 10 days. That's a good thing.

Well, hopefully we dump Almonte when Hart returns in the next few days. Then when Plush returns it'll be a choice between Boggs and Kotsay, and I think we all already know what the result of that decision will be, regardless of any numbers Boggs puts up...

No, because we are carrying 13 pitchers. A pitcher will go when Hart is activated. Then either Boggs or Almonte will go when Morgan comes back.

He was supposed to play in two games then get a day off. After the day off, he was supposed to start going deeper into games. It sounds like today is according to the plan.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Yes, Kottaras cleared waivers. Link.

C George Kottaras has been assigned outright to Nashville. Kottaras will join Nashville on Saturday.

That's the link I'd read. So "assigned outright" = cleared waivers, I assume? I guess I was wondering if that phrase meant he was to go there *if* he cleared, & things weren't necessarily final.

Would it have even been necessary for Kottaras to clear waivers? Had he ever been outrighted before?

Right, the outrighting happens after the player clears waivers.

Yes, you have to clear waivers when removed from the 40-man roster regardless of previous outrights (and this was Kottaras's first). Where those come into play is by granting the right to refuse subsequent outright assignments. Players with more than three years of MLB service time can also refuse outright assignments.

Sorry for my ignorance...but wouldn't any team in the bigs been allowed to add George to their 40 man? Is this correct?

I think George has value, but it is somewhat telling if no other major league team wanted to add him to their 40 man, right?

I believe they would have to add him to their 25-man roster. But yes, it's still telling.

While Nieves' offense leaves something to be desired, he's no worse than many backup catchers in the game. Offensively, I'd probably take Rivera over Kottaras as the number 2 offensive catcher in the system anyway but Kottaras is younger. I would hope Rivera's status at Nashville hasn't changed with this move.

A player can't be on the disabled list on the same day he appears in a game. The 18th would have been the first day Nyjer was eligible for the DL.

My understanding is that a player can be outrighted once in his career without exposing him to waivers. There is a difference between "outrighting" and being waived or being optioned.

the red sox had intended to outright george kottars to the minor leagues when the brewers acquired him via a waiver claim. he spent the rest of his time in the brewers organization on the major league roster.

once again, george kottaras was exposed to waivers, but this time, no team claimed him, and he was outrighted to the minor leagues. if his contract is purchased by the brewers again and they attempt to remove him from the 40-man roster a second time and assign him to the minor leagues, he has the option of refusing the minor league assignment and becoming a free agent . . . assuming no other team claims him and places him on their 25-man roster.

For non-prospects, the Brewers really need to forget about the "will clear waivers/opt out" business when making roster decisions. Put your best players on the damn field already, and cut the junk off the roster.

So, you're saying we're going to carry six outfielders? I find that pretty hard to believe.
