Chris Young to A's, Heath Bell to D-Backs

The Diamondbacks’ off-season retooling got off to an early start Saturday as they pulled off a three-team deal in which center fielder Chris Young was traded to the Oakland Athletics.

In exchange, the Diamondbacks landed shortstop Cliff Pennington and infield prospect Yordy Cabrera, whom they then flipped to the Miami Marlins in exchange for reliever Heath Bell.

Looks like some money is going to be exchanged as well.

I'm surprised these moves happened during the playoffs I always thought that they waited for after the WS to make trades (thought it was some unwritten baseball rule).

That's hilariously bad for Arizona. I think it's funny the D'Backs traded Young to get the guy Stephen Drew replaced and who they ended up getting nothing for basically.

I think it's funnier that the D'Backs traded for Bell. There's no way they got enough money back in the deal to justify it. Young is a really nice pickup for the A's. I think he'll fit in well in their lineup. The Marlins win just by getting rid of Bell. That was an absolutely horrible signing. Everyone but them knew it at the time too. I'm sure they'll nullify this move in the offseason though by making another stupid signing, or trading for A-Rod, or both.

Stephen Drew, the guy who's an impending Free Agent, who had hit 193/.290/.311/.601 in 40 games for them this year after missing the second half of last year(in the midst of a down year that season as well).

So he had virtually no value.

The financial considerations haven't even been discussed.

So once again, I think you're jumped the gun quite a bit here on bashing a trade and even bringing up Stephen Drew who again, had no value.

So they moved Chris Young, a guy who's value has dropped significantly the last three years while his salary has risen significantly. He's owed 8.5 next year and 11 the following with a 1.5 million dollar buyout.

And if they got Heath Bell for 2 years and 6-7 million, given his track record, and in particular his success in that division, not sure how this is such a "hilariously," bad deal. But again, when we don't know the main factor in this deal which is where the money is going and how much of it is changing places.

If the D-backs leave this deal with the A's taking Young's salary and the Marlins eating 2/3rds of the Bell deal.....impossible to declare it a good, bad, or hilariously bad trade.

Arizona is on the hook for $13 of the remaining $21 million owed to Bell.

Yep, definitely bad then. $13 million for Bell is too high in my opinion. We'll see i guess. Maybe he can turn it around a little bit, but I really don't see it happening. He was a product of Petco for the most part all along.

I like the deal for the A's, but I love Chris Young and I was hoping they would bring Drew back (though hopefully not for his $10 MM option).

Definite sell low on Young, pretty terrible move by DBacks. Though not as terrible as the Reds giving Baker 2 more years when he has taken a .550 style team to a .515 record over the past 3 seasons.

I don't think it's that bad for Arizona. Young really isn't any good, so it's not like they gave much up. They didn't get much either, so it seems like a wash to me for Arizona.

I don't get this for Oakland at all. I guess Young or Crisp DHs? Whoever the worse defender is (I honestly don't know, I think Young is better though)? The corner OF slots are locked up, and Young & Crisp make about $15MM combined next year, so DH is the only logical conclusion. Either way that's a lot of money for a DH.

Young is a Carlos Gomez quality CF, one of the best in baseball. Crisp is likely to be traded, he just cant' stay healthy enough to rely on.

Also, in their Cavernous OF, playing two awesome defensive OF's wouldn't exactly be such a bad thing.

Well, if that's the case, then it makes a lot of sense for Oakland. I haven't seen a lot of Arizona games to be honest. I knew Crisp wasn't anything special on defense.

As was stated, you can put Crisp in left and DH Cespedes I suppose. Just didn't seem to me that Oakland needed another outfielder. And Young makes a decent amount of money.
