new sports station in Milwaukee

920 AM is switching formats starting Monday and is basically simulcasting the big 1070 in Madison.

The good news is that Dan Patrick is coming back to Milwaukee. The new Jay Mohr show is now on here too. I tried to listen to it a little yesterday and its basically not listenable. He has about 5 impressions that he consistently uses throughout the show.

I also find it curious that now Milwaukee has 3 sports stations competeing for 2% of the radio market.

Still wish Jim Rome was on here, now I am listening it on my iphone from WDUZ in Green Bay.

it is during Jim Romes show. Rome moved from Premier to CBS sports radio on Wednesday. Jay Mohr got Jim Rome's gig on FSR.

I just can't believe that Milwaukee now has the D-List, Jay Mohr and the Big Unich and can't find a place for Romie.

Kind of an odd decision considering all of the other sports talk in Milwaukee. Also, don't think Milwaukee will want to listen to that much Madison local talk. It is kind of funny that not one of the three stations will air Rome.

Honestly, 1070 over here talks about UW, Brewers, and Packers...not local stuff to Madison, though they won't talk about Marquette (or the Bucks all that much). Rome is now on a new station over here as well. I'm not sure we need three sports-talk stations.

Regardless, I'm sure 920 will have more listeners than they do now.

the article states that 920 is getting a 0.7 share of the market. the 2 sports stations get a total of 1.9. Assuming that most sports talk listeners are pretty set in their routines and that very few people will start listening to sports talk starting on Monday, I don't see how their ratings go up.

The good news is that with the iheartradio app and the internet in general, people can listen to what they want. I listen to Rome every day either online or on my iphone.

I like the Lucas and Lepay morning show on 1070 for the most part. The show doesn't really get going until Matt Lepay joins the show after the first hour.

I've tried listening to Madison's new sports station: 1670 The Zone. It's a CBS sports radio affiliate. Besides Jim Rome, I haven't found anything that I am going to go out of the way to listen to.

I got sick of Rome really fast when he was on 107.5. I can't say there is any sports talk I listen to anymore. I don't spend all that much time in my car either though.

he is very polarizing. some love him, some loathe him. I enjoy him because he tends to put a different spin on things and just doesn't focus on the 2 or 3 issues of the day and runs them into the ground like 95% of sportstalk.

Jay Mohr is hilarious. I haven't heard him on regular radio but he's much better suited for the uncensoredness of his podcast & guest appearances on the Opie & Anthony show on Sirius/XM.

I used to be a big Rome guy, until i found out he has writers write his "takes" for him. Just isn't the same for me now. As for Mohr, i gave him a try. However that didn't last very long as i turned the channel IMMEDIATELY the first time i heard him say the term "Mohrriors". It took all the self control i had not to punch my radio in rage. I am a huge fan of the DP show, so i'm happy with that.

i'm sure Rome gets help, but i don't think KB and J-stew are writing his takes.

not sure about the TV gig, but from what i saw his takes are pretty similar to what he does on the radio, so i doubt it.

>> Rome & take-writers

Stev Czaban has mentioned it before on the Bob & Brian show ... in the context of the Rome radio show, not just TV. I tend to believe him, but it's based on little more than blind faith ... Czabe just seems like part of the family after so many years on B&B, so I trust him, and Rome seems like just the kind of arrogant doof that would build a career on the shoulders of other people's work.

It's funny to see the love/loathe comment about Rome, about him being polarizing, since I consider myself totally indifferent to him. When the wife and I take roadtrips we listen to a lot of sports talk radio and we seem to always catch his show. I could take it or leave it. I could probably never listen to it daily, his schtick grinds my gears a little too much, but my reaction wouldn't come close to hate.

It's fascinating that there are no mega-popular national sports talk shows out there. You look at the top 20 or so most listened-to national radio shows and you see formats that are political, financial, news, shock-jocks, and other odds and ends. Seems like there's a void ... like a market ineffiency ... for one or two dominant sports programs in the top dozen or so radio shows. Someone needs to step up.

as i said before, i like his show because its different. his fans tend to be very loyal and his distractors are just as much. i'd put him up there with someone like rush as far as being polarizing. i was bummed when he left milwaukee, but have gotten around it with the iheartradio app. wish i got to listen to all 3 hrs every day but still get to catch him for atleast an hour.

i think it depends on what you want as far as sportstalk. if you like local sports talk he is not for you. if you like a show where he takes tons of calls to discuss the 3 hot button issues of the day, he isn't for you either.

i haven't heard czaben's comments on bob and brian. i do know that czaben was a full time fill in for him which ended when he got his national show, so he may know. it really doesn't bother me if it is true. do you not think that PTI or other popular shows aren't scripted?

Does anyone know the deal with WSSP going to CBS Sports Radio and dumping Fox Sports Radio? Does that means Rome is on locally now? Either way, I like Fox's night sports talk much better than what I've heard on CBS this week. That Farrell guy (or whatever his name is) with the voice that sounds like rocks in a blender drives me nuts, solely because of the voice. Maybe I don't like the network because it's new to me...
"His whole life is a fantasy camp. People should plunk down $2000 to live like him for a week. Sleep, do nothing, fall ass-backwards into money, mooch food off your neighbors and have sex without dating... THAT'S a fantasy camp."

so i have noticed that since Rome started at CBS radio, his show has changed. It is much more bland and more like "typical sportstalk". I know this isn't the most exciting time of the year in sports but I was always bored by the end of the 1st hour and turned the show off. I decided to give Mohr a second change since he is now on over the air. The show is pretty good. I think his first few shows were too high on impressions and schtick. Now the show is pretty similar to what Jim Rome used to do for Premiere. Looks like i have changed from a clone to a mohrarrior after listening to Rome religiously since 1997 when he came to Milwaukee on 1510am.

Very possible. I'll give him a second chance on your recommendation.

let me know what you thought, i have become a big fan after listening only last week. It was lough to leave Rome since i have been a fan for 15 years, but Jay Mohr has got rid of alot of stuff that I didn't like when he first started.
