Aroldis Chapman Hit With Line Drive; Game Called in 6th

Scary moment in Surprise tonight. Sal Perez hit Chapman with a line drive off his face. Medical personnel ran out right away; Chapman's father came out of the stands. Estimate of 120 MPH comebacker. The game was called in the 6th. Obviously this isn't usual. Prayers to Chapman and the Reds.

I am not seeing any other news on this anywhere.

It blew up over Twitter. Reds' Beat Writer, ESPN and MLB have both confirmed via Twitter. Obviously on ESPN at the moment, Phil Jackson and the Heat without LeBron trump this......

Some good news from Twitter:

@M_Sheldon: Chapman suffered laceration above left eye, Price said. Never lost consciousness and was talking, moving #reds

Likely will have a fractured orbital bone. Hopefully not a fractured skull too. It's a great sign that he never went unconscious though.

Even the "pitcher's helmet" wouldn't make a difference when the ball hits under the hat area. There just isn't time to move.

A pitcher's helmet would be pretty useless in general as pitchers almost always get hit in the face.

That is a big loss for Cincy. Do they have any kind of decent replacement? Chapman is a shutdown closer a replacement could mean 2blown saves per month...Difference of 88wins vs 84 in 2months missed action

Any reason as to why they called the game? I know it's a meaningless spring training game but that just seems weird to do.

CBS (I believe) said they ended the game out of respect to Chapman. A lot of players were shook up, including the hitter, who left the field sobbing (via Twitter).

I'd suspect because it was a meaningless game and people would be a little shook up and concerned about him to concentrate on the game.

"Rock, sometime, when the team is up against it, and the breaks are beating the boys, tell 'em to go out there with all they got and win just one for the Uecker. I don't know where I'll be then, Rock but I'll know about it; and I'll be happy."

Interestingly enough, the truck from my station transported him to the hospital. Would have been me had I not taken a vacation day. Without delving into HIPAA there was initial talk of going to a trauma centre via helicopter. Glad it turned out as it did though. That looked like a really nasty hit

Anyone with medical experience understand the implications of what we're seeing there?

Why such an obviously huge incision area across his head? To avoid unnecessary facial incisions?
