2015 Rule 5 Possibilities (1B/3B)

I'm right there with you re: Strong and re: overthinking the moves. It's fun to try to understand this stuff. Plus I have trade anticipation fever. We have to obsess about small things until something big happens.

The draft is today, it looks like the Phillies will take Goeddel so I will predict the Brewers take Hernandez from Houston and if he is not available Rodriguez from Cleveland. I think Stearns will make a second pick as well but really hard to predict depending on what other teams do.

Maybe they should take three guys. As long as they have the open 40-man slots, why not? Increase your chances of getting a guy to stick by taking more than you normally would. Just bring in some minor league vets on NRIs and if the Rule 5 players don't work out, you can play AAAA players in Milwaukee instead.

Can only take 1 for the 25 man roster and 1 for the Minor League round

Brewers pick 2B Colin Walsh from the Oakland organization with the fifth pick of the Rule 5 Draft.

Didn't see much of anything on this guy before the draft. Anyone?

Switch hitter. Here are his milb stats:

.447 OBP last year. Meh.

And then this one too. Passed in the third round so that's it for the MLB portion. Didn't lose anybody.

Brewers make another Rule 5 pick: RHP Zach Jones from the Twins organization.

Zach Jones is hard-throwing reliever who split 2015 between advanced A and AA. Struck out 68 in 51.2 IP and was 12 for 15 in saves.

I'm thinking he'll play 3B here even with not playing it for a while, right?

In the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft, #Brewers select LHP Mitch Lambson from Atlanta and RHP Kender Villegas from St. Louis.

That's not correct. I'm not sure if there's a max, but as far as I'm aware you can keep drafting until you pass.

Walsh looks like a nice fit. Switch hitter with positional versatility ala Villar. Primarily a 2B but has time at 3B and probably could move to 1B too. Downside is he's already 26 and spent all of last year in AA playing against mostly younger players. Late bloomer? Guessing Jones is a hard thrower with command issues worth a look. Hasn't had any success above A ball so a long shot to be sure.
