I guess I didn’t even know Verona was fielding a WIAA team.

Due to Dane County restrictions, they couldn't practice and play as a "team". So somewhere got around it by forming a temp "club". That is the thing I'm surprised the WIAA didn't look into to. When restrictions eased, went back to a team.

The WIAA has nothing to do with them starting up a WAHA team, which they did. Several other teams that were in similar situations due to local decisions did as well. Once their school district / Dane County allowed them to compete as an HS team, that WAHA team disbanded and they came back into the mix as a WIAA team. It was great that they had the opportunity to defend their title. It should never have been in question in my opinion and Dane County has looked absolutely foolish as other areas of the state have figured out how to make it work this season giving countless student-athletes the opportunity to compete in the respective sports/activities.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Seeing Superior in the D2 State Championship game will never not be weird to me. I grew up and played for Superior and was a part of a championship team (and runner-up). With all the great tradition of hockey there, the breakdown of having them in D2 just never will add up to me. My HS team's season was ended by Fondy Spring and their 1st line was incredible. Their top 3 defensemen are also as good as any in the state. A weird D2 matchup to say the least about it. It should not be based on enrollment. There should be a panel and you are placed in each division based on a few criteria.

Some states use a "past successes" formula where they can bump a team up a division. In the past the WIAA has discussed this option, but tabled it.

This might be a fine idea. The other idea might be a tournament of champions. Like in basketball, why not put the top 5 divisions in a mini tournament? What's the harm? Hockey could have d1 and d2 play against each other too.

Win today for the regular season title. Nice turn around for Bucky. Obviously helps having Caufield and Holloway, but the senior class has been solid and a key for this team. Sucks to see Michigan on that 4 line as I think that's a tougher matchup for Bucky.

This team is white hot at the right time. They’re good enough to win the whole thing.....

Maybe ... it’s really hard to say without any inter-conference play.

I didn’t realize the Badgers had more national championships than Big Ten/WCHA championships. 6 vs 3 according to the broadcasters today. Very strange.

That old WCHA was tough.

Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota, Denver, Duluth ... heck, even CC and Michigan Tech won multiple national titles while in the old WCHA. You could argue it was easier to get hot and win 4 consecutive games in the NCAA tournament than it was to come out on top of that conference after 24 games. Minnesota-Duluth hasn’t won a conference title since the 80s, but has 3 natties in the last 10 years.

Out in California they have an open division on top for the best teams regardless of enrollment. They use the past success formula too for the tourneys. Our daughter's basketball team was Div. IV but Div III at tourney time (and in a league with Open teams which worked out as you'd expect).

Man, the women's final 8 is a mess. I am glad the Badgers are off the bubble if that's what is going to happen. Gophers ranked in the top 4 all year with 7 losses, all of which are to 2 teams that made the final 8 and one of them being the best or 2nd best team in the country somehow don't make it. Penn State may have even had a gripe.

Caufield with the game tying and overtime game winning goal today against Penn State. Kids incredible.

Yea, he is really good.

He is the Carlos Hathcock of college hockey players.
