My theory is that the Brewers are going to trade this to one of the teams that is over the international bonus pool for this signing period, in exchange for a competitive balance pick. I do not believe there is a rule against trading a bonus pool slot for a competitive balance pick. It would save the team trading for the slot more than what the slot is worth because they are currently being taxed on their overage.

 

The Padres' pick in competitive balance round B is worth $858,600, for reference.

My apologies for being a little slow on this, but can someone explain to me why they DFA'd Magnifico and not someone else? I thought he was one of our better up and coming relief arms (not to mention an awesome name). It just seems like a big waste. Was the FO down on him or maybe I just thought he was better than he is. Any explanation someone has would be helpful. Thanks!

Guys who throw 97 but can't find the strikezone are somewhat common though. Stearns has shown when it comes to pitchers he doesn't follow the Melvin strategy of acquiring hard throwers regardless of their strike throwing ability. I'd agree that it's surprising that it was Magnifico over others but ultimately I doubt Damian ever becomes anything.

To echo jerichoholicninja, Magnifico had a great arm - but the command was spotty.

 

Also, the fastball didn't seem to have much movement on it. The 100 mph fastball is great, but without much movement or control, he was questionable.

 

I'm a little surprised it happened so quickly this year. I mean, they knew what they had last fall, so why take up a roster spot if you really never believed in the guy? Perhaps they were hoping to see something in spring training - something that never occurred.

 

Goforth is another guy in this same mold. Good heat, but lack of control, and the fastball doesn't seem to do much.

I've never studied this. I assume if a team trades for a pick, you also add the value allocated to that pick to the team's total money available for the draft.

I was corrected by Ben Badler on this. If you're already over your pool allotment, you can't trade for more room. Can only trade for more room if you haven't spent it yet.
