The Orioles have acquired OF Elio Prado (17) and INF Noelberth Romero (17) from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for RHP Andrew Cashner. Prado will be assigned to the DSL Orioles 1 and Romero will be assigned to the DSL Orioles 2.

So the Orioles dealt a serviceable starter for two players that are the utter definition of lottery tickets. Cashner isn't a world beater, but he is solid. If this is the return on rental starters, the Brewers should be in the mix for some of the upper-end guys.

Hard to believe that Orioles would have made this move so far ahead of the deadline. I'm not much of a Cashner fan, but that seems like a pretty weak return for a guy that has turned in a pretty decent season so far.

The Orioles are at the beginning of a long rebuild. It makes sense for them to take lottery tickets that could turn into starters over prospects who are close to the majors but very likely to end up bench players or middle relievers.

Not sure what would been equal in our farm system, but isn't this the type player we could use. Quite sure Baltimore would rather trade to the NL than within its own division.

Cashner is a rental and the Orioles are going to be in a multi-year rebuild. Trading him within the division really isn't a big deal.

Aren't they always in a rebuild ? More to my point or ? Was couldn't we have made similar offer . Not sure what equivalent prospects could have got the deal done.

He's been Trashner up until this season. Hard to expect much of a return for him.

I kinda doubt they care at this point. By the time they're anywhere near competing again, just about whoever they trade would likely be gone. So if they have a decent arm, it would actually probably help them to face that arm more often, helping them lose more games so they can lose even more games.

The Orioles were in the playoffs as recently as 2016 and played in the ALCS within the past five years (2014). They also appeared in the playoffs in 2012. One of my fears is that this current Brewers core ends up a blip on the radar that nobody remembers having success similar to how it seems many people view the Orioles despite a good run.

 

I think a lot of casual baseball fans would get this trivia question wrong... Which of the following teams hasn’t played in a league championship series over the past decade: the Brewers, Orioles, or Nationals?

It's likely because Cashner is making $9.5M this year, and if he pitches another 90 innings this year his 2020 option for $10M becomes guaranteed.
