Brewers Sign RP David Phelps

Splits vs. R since he moved to the bullpen full-time in 2016:

.196/.276/.277

Splits vs. L during the same time:

.254/.352/.422

Yeah, he's been better against righties. During that same span:

2016 ERA 2.28, FIP 2.80, xFIP 3.15, K/9 11.84, BB/9 3.95, ERA- 58

2017 ERA 3.40, FIP 3.55, xFIP 3.76, k/9 10.02, B/9 4.20, ERA- 82

2018 DNP

2019 ERA 3.41, FIP 4.58, xFIP 5.01, K/9 9.44, B/9 4.46, ERA- 76

Not bad 2019, and hopefully a year after injury he can bring the FIP down some. Brewers' defense probably won't save him :-)

His stats overall are kind of ugly, but he consistently has a solid ERA...so he has that going for him. End of the day I don't care if his FIP sucks...just get outs when you need them and keep the ERA down.

I think this signing will be viewed as a below the radar one come mid-season. Phelps is a quality reliever who should provide another go to option late in games who can hold a lead and allow Hader and Knebel days off.

Just be better than Albers and we'll adore Phelps.

That is about what I thought with the signing. We found our Albers this season. At least hes experienced. Played for the Cubs last season. We traded JJ fpr Phelps.

I've been very frustrated at the look of the pen. This helps some. Guy started off last year in mid June and had a quality season. His 2017 numbers would fit in just fine.

Looks like he leaned on his CB more last year and it, nor his Cutter were very good. Hopefully those pitches bounce back this year.

It would be great if Burnes could come back to 2018 lights out form. He's still a wildcard who if he can get together adds another great bullpen arm.

If Burnes gets it together, I hope he never spends another inning in the bullpen. He has the potential to join Woodruff at the top of the rotation.
