The 5th rounder is a sunk cost. They had to do something. It was a bad pick but keeping him on the team would have compounded the error.

Vogel wasn't the first time the Packers were fine at punter and then had to get someone's dream punter for no real reason only to have it backfire.

A 5th is whatever anyway. As Homer said, a sunk cost. It wasn't a great investment but 5ths are a crapshoot anyway. Many don't even make it out of their first training camp with a spot.

Perhaps even more oddly, is that Justin Vogel never made another NFL team. The Browns, 49ers, and Broncos all tried him out and cut him. He was on the XFL when it shutdown.

 

So perhaps there was something more there than just his stats?
