Defense

Just thought I would post this since I ran across it today.

Rock loves to talk about fielding percentage and by that measure Brewers have not been very good…….but when you look at runs saved……the story is quite a bit different. Look at the difference between Brewers and the Reds…..eye opening.

Imagine how much worse it would be if the Reds would have stuck with Saurez at SS?

Defense & Baserunning during the Stearns/Counsell era...

2016: +24 DRS | +5.2 BSR

2017: +23 DRS | +2.4 BSR

2018: +121 DRS | +8.2 BSR

2019: +26 DRS | +5.9 BSR

2020: -9 DRS | -17.6 BSR (Hey, Wha Happened?!?!?)

2021: +51 DRS | +9.0 BSR

Add it all up & the Brewers are 5th in Defensive Runs Saved (+156) during the Stearns/Counsell era & 13th in baserunning (+13.0).

Definitely one of the primary reasons the Brewers have won the 8th most games since 2016 with a bottom 5/6 payroll.

Take out the bizzaro 2020 and it's even better. Great to see a team with pitching, defense, and smart baserunning!

That’s good stuff Sveum…..thanks for posting it.

Man that defense in 2018 was something.

A gigantic reason as to why they were able to make guys like Miley and Chacin look so good.

Every discussion of how good our pitching is should include this information. The front office set out to put an outstanding defense out there, it seems, and despite some hiccups on the left side of the infield, it's worked pretty well. I said in another thread that we weren't losing much in FA, and someone rightly pointed out that Garcia is likely to be gone. In addition to his offense this year, his defense has been really good, even enough that he saved the team by putting in some key innings in CF last year.
