In the resumed game, Carolina added another 2 runs in the 8th inning on a Zack Raabe 2-RBI single to extend the lead to 7-2. RHP Michele Vassalotti then closed it out with 2 innings of work, though gave up a 2-run shot in the 9th. Mudcats 7, Hillcats 4.

The result closes this week's series gap to Lynchburg 2, Carolina 1 and puts the Mudcats one-half game ahead of the Hillcats for first place in the Carolina League's North division.

AAA Nashville needs a victory to avoid falling in a 3-1 series deficit in Durham and sends RHP Caleb Boushley to the mound to hopefully replicate his last start (7 shutout innings on 3 hits last week). C Mario Feliciano is back behind the plate, having his safely in 12 of his last 13 games:

High-A Wisconsin sits one game out of first place, but comes in with a 23-inning scoreless streak. To break the schneid, the Timber Rattlers welcome two new batters to the lineup: 22-year old INF Jose Acosta (acquired from Texas Rangers) and 22-year old OF Arbert Cipion, who was rightly promoted from Carolina after an .868 OPS in 151 plate appearances. Tonight's starter is highly-advanced LHP Antoine Kelly (3.27 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 12.3 K/9 in 44 innings):

We've got an early 4-0 lead in Durham and an early 4-0 deficit in Lynchburg:

  • Corey Ray smacked a 2nd inning grand slam for Nashville on a 1-out, full count pitch
  • Carolina's Israel Puello gave up 4 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks in the first 2 innings before settling in

Caleb Boushley looked like he would escape the 3rd inning unharmed, but let a 1-2 count get away from him for a walk, followed by Josh Lowe fouling off 4 pitches before doubling home 2 runs. It's Nashville 4, Durham 2.

RHP Edwin Jimenez has come on in relief of Israel Puello to start the 6th inning.

...and he gave up a home run on the 3rd pitch he threw.

Lynchburg 5, Carolina 0.

Joe Gray Jr. following up his shared 'Player of the Month' nod by going 3-for-4 and hitting his 7th homer - a 2-run shot in the first. Ashton McGee with again improving his results at the plate is 2-for-4 with a rbi. Newly acquired, and playing 2nd base on the evening, Jose Acosta has also endeared himself to his teammates with a ding dong. It's 7-4 Rattlers in the top of the eighth where Cam Robinson will try and work around a lead-off double to preserve the lead.

OK, my 'What's going on with Wiemer?' antenna is officially up. He again is on the bench. This is, what, his third consecutive game on the pines with no word as to what might be going on? Ruh-roh raggy!

In the game itself, Jakson Reetz hit his 6th double and has an rbi, Cam Devanney just hit his second HR of the series and seventh on the year. Victor Castaneda has completed five innings on 97 pitches of 3 run (2 earned) 7 strikeout ball. Biloxi leads 5-3.

Nashville grabs a game back in the series and is back to 17 above 0.500 winning 8-4 in Durham. Boushley with another solid outing on the hill, and Thomas Hardy gives up his first run in relief (cheers, Thomas, that was a heck of a start since coming back up to Triple-A). In addition to the aforementioned grand salami from Corey Ray we have a Wily Adames knock in the eighth inning. Yeah baby.

Two more scoreless Cam Robinson innings for the extended Save. One hit. 4 k’s.

What. A. Stud.

BUT, the real news might be: He shaved his ‘Stache!

Nice look, young fella! Please grow it back?

The ongoing shaky Biloxi bullpen blew another one tonight in Pensacola. BUT, enough about that. It. Is. The Month of Lutz. My goodness, there is hot and then there is ludicrous. Hottest player in the system right now - apologies Abraham Almonte.

It’s sort of easy to forget that Lutz is just under six months older than Joey Wiemer. The ISO is really impressive this season (.255), but the strikeout rate continues to be an issue (32.7%). It would be great to see Lutz continue with a breakout season and maybe cut the strikeout rate a bit.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
