Flips the MiLB.TV channel and watches Jackson Chourio rip his second triple deep over the center fielder and to the wall. His streak may have ended in Game 1, BUT, it would appear his talent is endless. Great Scotts, Marty!

All. He. Does. Is knock men in. Joey Wiemer steps up with two down and Yeison Coca at second base. Mike Guerrero tests the left field arm as Wiemer ripped a ball past the diving shortstop. Not on this night. Shuckers take the lead 4-3. It was a close play at the plate but the catcher could not hang on and Yeison slid in safely as the ball trickled behind home plate and Wiemer took second base. AND, just like that, Joey swipes third base for his third stolen base on the evenings. That's 15 on the year. WHAT CAN'T HE DO, Keith Law?!??

This isn't a great outing from Noah Zavolas but it's definitely a much better outing. Perhaps, he's starting to shake that rust off. He'll get into the fifth inning here trying to hold the 4-3 lead. 52 pitches through 4 innings is a very very workable amount of pitches. This is a good direction to be heading, Noah. Well done!

Edwin Jimenez with a fantastic bounce-back performance. I continue to love this young man's arsenal - I've said it before and I'll say it again, at his age and with his toolkit he gives me vibes of Mike Fiers. 5 complete innings of 2 hit, 3 k, and no run ball is fine by me versus the number one team in Low-A.

Let's go back to the baseball heart throb that is Jackson Chourio. Hitting streak ends. Let's go 3-for-3 with a HR, a triple, and a single. Is a cycle in store tonight?!? My word.

Rhyne Moore is really settling in since his first two starts at High-A Wisconsin. He's pitched a mere 82 through 7 complete innings. It's 3-1 T-Rats. Moore also has 8 k's. Wow. Great stuff, young man!

And, that's a wrap in Zebulon, Israel Puello holds on for the win after conceding a run scoring single. He strands runners on first and second with a liner to right field. The Mudcats take two back from Myrtle Beach - yeah, Cubbies, take that! (Lol) - and win both games on the day by one run. I'll give the fake cycle to Chourio because, well, he's such an epic talent. Hard to fathom what he's doing down in Low-A. It really is.

It is still obviously early, but outside of decent walk and strikeout rates, there was no statistical reason to expect Luis Castillo to get a spring training invite, but not only did he get that and a stateside spot, but he has hit in the top five in the order in each of the games and has hit two home runs after hitting none last year. Sometimes the tea leaves do mean something.

Guilarte and Areinamo have both had pretty strong starts as well.

Box Score: ACL Brewers Gold 5, ACL Reds 3

Seven-inning game in 108 degree heat.

Batting third, 18-year-old Dominican RF Luis Castillo homered for the 2nd time in three games, and singled as well with his left-handed swing. Corner infielder (playing first base here) Jesus Parra, who clubbed six home runs in his age 16 DSL season in 2019, catching our attention, hit a three-run HR from the cleanup spot that gave the Golden Boys a 3-2 lead in the 4th. Parra's .566 OPS in 2021 in his first stateside season was one of last year's bigger disappointments.

After the Reds immediately tied things in the top of the 5th, the Crew got doubles from two switch-hitters in the lower-third of the order - second baseman Kaylan Nicasia and CF Rafael Martinez, to reclaim the lead. Castillo's home run added the insurance run in the 6th in the team's final offensive frame in this Maryvale contest.

18-year-old 6'6" LHP Caden Vire, drafted in the 12th round out of a Washington State high school, made his 2022 debut after appearing in three games last summer. Another southpaw, 6'0" 19-year-old Fraudy Maldonado, closed things out. RHP Yorman Galindez, 19, a Venezuelan signee for just $10,000 last January, was assigned to Maryvale to begin his career, and has now already appeared in two of the team's three games, covering four innings.

Four of the ACL's 18 teams are 3-0, including this Brewers' Gold club.

Box Score: ACL Brewers Blue 7, ACL Cubs 3

First win for the 1-2 squad.

This game at the Cubs' complex did play out at a full nine innings - it'd be interesting to learn what goes into the decisions in determining game length on a case-by-case basis.

Down 3-1 heading to the top of the 8th, shortstop Daniel Guilarte cracked an RBI ground-rule double and two-way player Quintin Low, playing first base, added a game-tying ground ball single to right. Low would subsequently be thrown out at home (for the second out of the inning, oh no) on Eduarqui Fernandez' double to left. Low reached base four times (three walks).

First pro home run for 2021 14th round Nevada high school pick Jace Avina, the DH in this contest.

Things got super-funky in the top of the 9th as the Blue Men Group scored four runs without a single base hit - two Cubs pitchers combined for five walks (one intentional), three wild pitches (throw in a passed ball, too), and three balks. Review it all in the game log.

Wonderful stateside debut for 19-year-old Nicaraguan starting RHP Jared Albir. Albir made his way to Maryvale after just one DSL season in which his K and BB numbers did not shine, so his five innings here (one BB, four K's) showed promise. Mound hero was again 19-year-old Dominican RHP Samuel Dario, who stranded three inherited runners and proceeded to add two scoreless, retiring all seven men he faced (five K's).

Both Maryvale teams have rematches Friday, switching ballparks.

Box Score: DSL Phillies White 6, DSL Brewers #1 Squad 5

#1 Crew slips to 0-3 despite out-hitting the Phils 8-4. Came up one short in the 9th, scoring twice.

Professional mound debuts for 6'3" 17-year-old starting LHP Wande Torres, a Dominican native. Have to believe the kids from the D.R. get family in the stands occasionally. Venezuela southpaw Osbriel Mogollon, 18, tossed two scoreless in his pro debut.

17-year-old switch-hitting shortstop Jhonny Severino ($1,230,000 signing bonus), a Dominican native, is now 2-for-9 (two singles, four walks, six K's).  Fellow switch-hitter CF Luis Lara, 17 years old out of Venezuela ($1,100,000 bonus) is now 5-for-12. 17-year-old Venezuelan OF Fabricio Valera, DH'ing here ($400,000 bonus) singled and walked twice after an 0-for-8 start to his career. First pro home run for middle infielder Gery Holguin ($450,000 bonus), as the Dominican product was playing second base here. Holguin doesn't turn 17 until August.

Severino, Lara, Valera and Holguin were the 2nd thru 5th highest $ signees in January 2022's international class. 17-year-old Venezuelan SS/3B Johan Barrios topped the list at $1,385,000 and plays on the Crew's other DSL squad.

Pro debut for 17-year-old Dominican RF Deylin Gomez, singled and walked. Congrats! About that pickoff...

Box Score: DSL Brewers #2 Squad 12, DSL Rangers Red 10

Second-year RHP Dencer Geraldo tossed a scoreless first but couldn't complete the 2nd, putting the men down 6-0, but no fear. The Brewers narrowed the gap with three in the 3rd, and took a 12-9 lead with an eight-spot in the 6th on their way to a 2-1 record.

Two pitchers made pro debuts, 17-year-old Venezuelan LHP Jose Meneses and 18-year-old Dominican RHP Franddy De Los Santos. Each walked four, as Meneses navigated two innings but De Los Santos only retired one batter, hitting one as well. The two combined for five wild pitches. Crew pitchers combined for ten wild pitches in the winning effort (won't type that often!).

Second-year LF Yeison Perez hit one home run in 156 2021 at-bats (.626 OPS), yet went deep twice here.

1B Jamal Zalm, in his second season out of Curacao, and rookie CF Reminton Batista combined to reach six times from the top two spots in the order.

New opponents for the two DSL clubs on Friday.
