Game Thread (8/02/2022): Brewers (Burnes) at Pirates (Wilson) - 6:05 PM CDT

Two things:

This hinged on Burnes walking a pair w/a 3 run lead, one out & no one on. It was kind of an oddball strike zone but my goodness......

This magnified the lack of ability to add to the pos player group at the deadline. I'm fine with Brosseau, but If you're going to be hell-bent on hitting for Tellez & Wong vs LHP you're a man short. That damn 80 gamer by Severino keeps rearing it's ugly head.

Drury was dealt for the Pads #6 prospect, so probably was too expensive. But this roster construction is gonna catch up to them. I wonder how long before we see Ruiz.

Somebody has to explain the Severino love. Can't play D has no pop without the juice and oh by the way can't play in playoffs. What exactly is he doing here??

He's in the mix for 2023 b/c you lose Narvaez & Feliciano is not good enough, yet, defensively. And they don't feel they're in a position to allow him leave for no compensation.

Not saying it's a good enough reason, but that's it.

I think this is a fair read.

I'm more optimistic than you in the sense that I think this roster is good enough to make the playoffs (and should), but I absolutely agree that this team is limited.

I think you have to bite the bullet on Severino at this point. You're really gonna have him sitting around doing nothing 95% of the time so he can play in 23?

That seems wild to me (and I know you explicitly said it's not necessarily a good reason).

Alright, it's the game thread, so obviously venting is healthy.

I'm not concerned with PHing that much. Fine. You have the roster space, might as well use it.

I'm not concerned with Bixberger giving up a run. Bad defense, and, without the deadline moves, that's probably Gotta in that position. Okay.

At this point, the 3 catchers should be done. There aren't enough ABs. You probably tried to trade one of those guys and didn't get the right offer. Severino seems like he should go. Somebody probably grabs him, but what are you gonna do? Isn't Hiura more valuable right now?

I suspect they tried to deal Narvaez &, with our wonderful luck, he's not having a strong year with the bat. So good luck getting any interest.

Bone head move by CC to pitch hit for the two guys who produce the offense. This was a bad loss to a bad team and wonder if this is a trade hang over

It’s weird that a swing for the fences offense had three home runs and couldn’t come back.  Sure could’ve used some hitting.  I’ll give burnes a break since his performances the past three years show his worth

I have a feeling it could get to the point where it's at least considered.

The roster could very well be good enough to get to the post-season provided we perform the way we were constructed to---pitching & run prevention. It's just not an ideal group w/the way it's put together. Tonite illustrated that.

I guess I look at it like this: If we're being shut out, down 3 runs, and facing the opponents' ace pitcher, one out & no one on in the sixth, There's no way that ace walks back-to-back hitters to give us life. Burnes has been terrific, no doubt. But he's our ace; he needs to be better there, LH hitters & wonky strike zone notwithstanding.

Oh, Brewers…..

And good on ya pinch hitting for guys that are 5/6 with a pair of bombs, Counsell.

Honestly, every time we need our manager to make a smart decision, he flubs it. And we can’t continue pissing away games to inferior opponents like this. Stop me if you’ve heard this before.

Sometimes you have to enjoy the ride. Brewers will lose games after a streak. I wasn't alive for 1982 but these are some of the most exciting years I have had as a fan. Haven't posted here for a long time but they have it, bats get hot and Peralta comes back. Rest easy, I remember when it was fun just to watch them win a game.

interesting stuff for Nashville
Frelick went 3-5 hitting leadoff playing LF; Hiura hit another HR, walking twice and not striking out.
Ruiz didn’t play.
i am interested in seeing what our offensive upgrade will be soon. It’s got to be Hiura at DH and a guy like Frelick or Ruiz in the OF. We need some lightning in a bottle from somewhere. Guys that can get on base and run a bit too.

This was my biggest issue. Wong especially can hit lefties and he's 3 for 3 with a bomb, and you go to severino? I understood the tellez move a bit more because brosseau pounds lhp and tellez has real splits. I would have let Wong stay in over severino, no question.

Craig really got too cute pinch hitting for Tellez and Wong who were a combined 5/6 with 2 HR.

CC has been "cute" during games all season long.  I'm glad I didn't see last night's game.  ?

For those of us who were around for 1982 we are weary of "just good enough" baseball.  I have a feeling our manager, GM and owner are happy to have winning seasons and fans in the seats.  This is the lot for a small market team in this league.

Oh well, at least these games give us something to watch every day...
