Fri. 8/5 - Heating Up to a Boil (Extreme Summer Weather Reference)

The Shuckers are in a tight contest, leading 3-2 in the 7th inning.

Drew Lugbauer hit his 22nd homer (5th off Biloxi) to tie it 2-2. Biloxi’s Garrett Whitley then manufactured a run in the 5th inning (walk, 2 stolen bases, sac fly).

Luna pitched 4 innings. Noah Zavolas came in for the 6th inning. We’ll see if Zavolas is playing second long man today  or possibly shifting toward a shorter bullpen role with the arrival of LHP Robert Gasser in the Hader trade.

LHP Pablo Garabitos threw 4 2/3 innings (2 runs) and RHP Miguel Guerrero pitched 4 scoreless, hitless innings to give Carolina a great chance, but the comeback fell short, 7-6.

We’ll have to wait to see OF Jace Avina’s Low-A debut tomorrow, I guess.

Old friend RHP Logan Gillespie (still just 25 years old; pitched 10 1/3 MLB innings for the Orioles earlier this year) came in to strike out the Sounds’ side swinging in the 9th inning, completing Nashville’s 7-2 loss. They still lead the series 3-1.

Darrien Miller hit his first homer since July 1, a 2-run shot in the top of the 5th inning to extend Wisconsin’s lead to 4-0. Hall and Cipion had RBI singles the previous inning.

But CF Rodriguez exits after 4 scoreless innings (73 pitches) and Quad Cities then grabbed a run back off Middendorf. 4-1 Timber Rattlers.

That’s Middendorf’s 1st run since his Low-A promotion some time ago. He covers 4 innings here. 3 H, a solo HR, 6 K’s. I’m a believer. And, it seems they might be stretching him out for bigger things?

After 3 scoreless innings from Zavolas (yes!), Biloxi breaks it open with a 4-run 9th inning, with a Lutz single, Monasterio double and Dillard triple (glorious). 7-2 Shuckers heading to the bottom of the 9th inning.

Rodriguez-Middendorf-Meeker is a heckuva combination. Love it! 4-1 Rattlers’ victory.

First round pick SS Eric Brown Jr. probably doesn’t need to see any more ACL rookie level pitching. 3-for-3 with 2 doubles, 3 runs scored and a stolen base tonight for ACL Brewers Gold. All achieved in just 3 innings of play. ?

With fellow SS Eduardo Garcia promoted to High-A Wisconsin today, it’s time to move Brown to Low-A Carolina, who could have used him in today’s 1-run loss.

19-year-old RHP Kevin Briceno is quietly making a case for a serious promotional candidate - in 2022 still (less likely)  or to begin 2023. He gets the win tonight in a bullpen role. 4 IP, 4 H, 2 BB, 4 K, 0 R. It caught my eye that he was one of only two Brewers pitchers to qualify in Baseball Larceny’s recent 25 and under list:

RHP Stiven Cruz also makes this list BUT Briceno is in the top 10 (!!) six slots behind Marlins super prospect Eury Pérez.

This really startled me.
