I guess we’re following yesterday’s template, with 3 DSL losses to be followed by an undefeated night for the full season squads.

DSL Brewers-2 led both of their games 2-1 late against DSL Phillies White, giving up a tying run in the final scheduled inning of Game One and losing it in extra innings 3-2, then giving up a 4-spot in the penultimate inning of their second game to ultimately lose 7-2.

Having their Manfred Man picked off 2nd base was a novel way to blow the opener. Five errors in the second game meant that the first 4 runs were unearned.

By contrast, DSL Brewers-1 might be jealous that their brethren at least held some leads, as they were shutout by DSL Phillies Red 6-0.

Bright spots:

- C Eric Martinez hit a 2-run homer to lift his season OPS to .817.

- RHP Daniel Corniel allowed no earned runs (though 4 unearned runs came across), just 3 hits, no walks and K’d 5 batters in 5 innings of work.

- OF Duncan Garcia (season OPS of .711) had two hits and a walk, while also throwing out a runner at 2nd base.

The DSL young men can't seem to get things going in the right direction. Bummer. It would be nice if we didn't see them lose them all or win them all. That certainly seems the pattern. A rough way to start the Saturday morning coffee ritual!

It's time for me to bring back our recent highlight reel for young Daniel Corniel:

INF Dylan O'Rae is sneakily coming on in the ACL. This is quite an exciting development for such a young, relatively unknown (stateside), draft pick in 2022. After a 3-for-4 evening last night, with a free pass in there to boot, he's 1-for-2 with 2 2-out RBI and another BB against his brethren on the ACL Brewers Blue - once again in the lead-off spot. You, quite frankly, love to see this! Let's go, young man!

As always, we need to keep in mind the small sample sizes for these new draftees. In just two-games' time, he's raised his BA to 0.333 and his OPS to 0.785. I'm staying excited. The early returns from MooreBrown Jr., and O'Rae are very appealing to my eyes.

Amazing 20-year old RHP Alexander Cornielle (3.28 season ERA with 120 Ks in 96 2/3 innings) gets the start as Low-A Carolina aims for a 5th straight win at home over Fayetteville. Veteran C Jose Sibrian has a 6-game hitting streak:

AA Biloxi is tied 2-2 In their road series in Montgomery, with LHP Nick Bennett (4.87 seasons ERA) making his 20th AA start of the season. 1B Thomas Dillard has a 7-game on-base streak:

The Timber Rattlers’ “continuation game” is underway. They pick up play in Cedar Rapids in the bottom of the 4th inning, Wisconsin leading 5-0. RHP Zach Mort has come in to pitch.

Let's keep it up, future stars!:

  • Carolina 3, Fayetteville 1 - top of the 9th inning
  • Wisconsin 5, Cedar Rapids 2 (continuation game from yesterday) - top of the 7th inning
  • Biloxi 2, Montgomery 1 - bottom of the 1st inning (oh, but the bases are loaded with 1 out against Bennett)

Starting RHP Alexander Cornielle wasn't as sharp as usual (e.g. 5 walks), but still limited the damage to just 1 earned run in 5 innings.

LHP Leoni De La Cruz was fabulous in 3 innings of scoreless relief.

RHP Michele Vassalotti (promote this man) is on for the attempted save.

RF Garrett Whitley got Biloxi off to an excellent start with a 2-run homer in the top of the 1st inning, plating DH/SS Andruw Monasterio (who's always always always on base as the team's most consistent offensive threat).

But LHP Nick Bennett has given up 3 runs on 3 singles, a walk and a hit batsmen to now put the Shuckers in an early 3-2 hole.

Vassalotti got the job done, as he always does, preserving Carolina's 3-1 victory, their 5th straight over Fayetteville. His season ERA is now down to 2.23.

Yesterday was 1B Branlyn Jaraba Day (6 RBIs) and today he came through again with a big 5th inning RBI double to knot the contest 1-1, before the Woodpeckers fell apart a bit (walk, error, hit batsmen, walk) to gift the Mudcats a 2nd run.

SS Eric Brown Jr. was beaned twice and knocked in the last run on a sacrifice fly. 3B Jadher Areinamo (single, walk) and C Jose Sibrian (single, walk) each reached base twice.

Gulp. Bennett was pulled after just 8 hitters (38 pitches), unable to escape the 1st inning. It looks like a bullpen game, as RHP Kent Hasler is in. Shuckers trail 6-2.

In better news, LHP Karlos Morales gave Wisconsin 2 scoreless, hitless relief innings after RHP Zach Mort had given up 2 runs in 2 innings.

So they're through 7 innings, with Wisconsin holding on to a 5-2 lead. Is it RHP James Meeker time?

Actually, it's RHP Robbie Baker who was called for the 6-out save, which he pulled off with aplomb: 2 scoreless innings, 3 Ks. Wisconsin also added an insurance run in the top of the 9th inning on a Joe Gray Jr. (2-for-5, 3 RBIs) RBI infield single.

It seems like forever ago (well, yesterday actually) that Gray and Wes Clarke each homered to give the Timber Rattlers their initial lead.

Now onto the nightcap - Game Two of today's Wisconsin-Cedar Rapids doubleheader awaits.

Valerio’s poor season has been a bit of a bummer, especially with how well he started out the season. Still only 21 years old though so obviously lots of time to turn it around. Hopefully he has a nice bounce back next year. Him and Wiemer have definitely been two of my biggest disappointments this season.

Actually, Morales walked three.  But did give two scoreless, hitless innings.

After winning today's opening game, Wisconsin now only trails 3-1 in their road series at Cedar Rapids, with 21-year old RHP Israel Puello (5.66 ERA in Low-A/High-A) ready to make his 9th appearance since promotion to High-A.

With CF Jackson Chourio and C Jeferson Quero both getting some rest, 19-year old 9th round draft pick 1B/C/OF Tayden Hall has been pulled in for a surprising Wisconsin debut, while INF Jose Acosta is making his first-ever minor league outfield start in his 242nd game:

1 - Darrien Miller - DH
2 - Ben Metzinger - 3B
3 - Wes Clarke - C
4 - Joe Gray Jr. - CF
5 - Eduardo Garcia - SS
6 - Tayden Hall - 1B
7 - Ethan Murray - 2B
8 - Jose Acosta - RF
9 - Arbert Cipion - LF
X - Israel Puello - P

Down 11-2 in the top of the 5th inning, Biloxi's Gabe Holt (making his 1st-ever minor league outfield start) led off the inning with a double (his first extra base hit since June 16th - man, what a rough season for him) and then a rain delay halted action while CF Corey Ray was up to bat.

SS Eduardo Garcia comes through with a clutch 2-out, 3-run homer in the top of the 1st inning, with the young Tayden Hall on deck. 3-0 Timber Rattlers.

Thank you for putting player development first and not intentionally walking Garcia, Cedar Rapids! Oh, Hall was then called out on strikes.

Bad start for Puello though: 2 singles and 2 walks, nobody out.

He was promoted from Low-A Carolina despite a 5.51 ERA in part because of his terrific 61 K / 17 BB ratio in 49 innings, but this level of ball appears to be a giant leap. He now has 26 walks in 40 High-A innings.
