Some enticing Starters taking the mound across all levels:

  • RHP Cameron Wagoner takes his craft for his second start in Zebulon...here's a refresher from his first outing.

    A Reminder:

Carolina will play an early afternoon tilt - 3 CST for you Midwestern folks...

  • RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez brings his savvy savvy stuff back to the hill for Wisconsin as they look to continue a really nice series in Beloit.
  • RHP Justin Jarvis takes the mound for the Shuckers in Rocket City. It's been a tough road series at a place that has been tough for most teams in 2022. Can Jarvis cut down on the base runners and walks in his second outing? His first was a successful outing, all things considered, but he had quite a bit of danger on the basepaths. He won't get away with that at the Trash Panda's ballpark.
  • RHP Tyler Herb. What more can I say? I've loved this young man's game all season long. After a brief spell where he self-admittedly was not pitching his best stuff and attacking hitters, he's back to doing vintage 2022 Tyler Herb things for the Nashville pitching staff. What has he done in August for the playoff-pushing Sounds? 3 GS, 4 G, 19 IP, 1 CG, 1 SHO, 15 H, 2 BB, 22 K, 3 ER, 0.217 BA, 0.89 WHIP, 1.42 ERA. I absolutely love it.

Carolina let yesterday's game slip away, so trails the series at home against Columbia 3-1, but has RHP Cameron Wagoner making his 2nd start of the season with the Mudcats tonight (3 shutout innings with 7 Ks in his Low-A debut). CF Eduarqui Fernandez comes into the game with a 7-game on-base streak:

Wisconsin's having a nice bounce-back week, leading Peoria 3-1 in this road series. RHP Carlos F. Rodriguez makes his 6th High-A start tonight, in which he's been dominant thus far (1.78 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 11.4 K/9 in 25 1/3 innings). DH/OF Jackson Chourio has homered in 4 of his last 5 games:

Biloxi grabbed a win yesterday to cut their series deficit on the road against Rocket City to 3-1 and have RHP Justin Jarvis making his second AA start tonight (5 IP, 2 R, 5 Ks in his first start). C/1B Wes Clarke has an 8-game hitting streak:

RHP Jeferson Figueroa really struggled to find consistency as a starter. BUT, he absolutely has ‘stuff’ - I spoke to it in a summer report not long ago.

Maybe we’re finding something late in the season as a piggyback long-reliever? This is his second consecutive Garabitos-esque ‘take the ball and run’ long relief outing. His first effort (8/27): 4 2/3 IP, 3 H, 1 HB, 0 BB, 8K, 1 ER. Tonight’s output (so far - Bottom 7th…Mudcats lead 5-0): 3 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 5 K.

This is extremely promising. I’m really happy for him. The K:BB numbers have progressed favorably all season. His change-up is pretty nasty. It’s super-promising his best stuff is coming late in the season.

** Sheeesh did I throw out the Jinx gauntlet! ?

AAA Nashville has won consecutive one-run games to build a 3-1 series lead at home against Memphis. RHP Tyler Herb has recorded victories in his last 3 starts and has a 2.20 ERA over his last 45 innings. DH/OF Sal Frelick's on-base streak has reached 21 games:

I asked yesterday (late) but got no response. Why do they bat Areinamo so low in the order (and he's higher today than yesterday).

Here is my answer (and I didn’t see your question):

I don’t know. But I will say: he was only promoted to Carolina the first week of August. And, he’s just 18 years old. Currently they are prioritizing drafted bats and bats with a bit more pop.

Also, remember;

The organization and the coaches and the player(s) are always working with more information, conversations, and decision-makers. We might think something makes sense on paper or even via viewing(s) but we just don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

I take it as a signal that they don’t intend to rush him along and don’t quite classify him on the prospect level of similarly-aged players like Hendry Mendez and Luis Castillo.

The recent draft picks (Brown, Moore) and other older guys are probably getting more at-bats (e.g. Perez, Fernandez, Chirinos), because the club needs to see more of them to plan their levels/roles for 2023.

Our young men are fired up tonight. OF Arbert Cipion was ejected from Wisconsin’s game after grounding out in the 3rd inning. And RHP Justin Jarvis was ejected from Biloxi’s game after a long 3rd inning.

Wisconsin and Peoria are now scoreless through five. Peoria seems to have left their bats somewhere, up against the formidable Carlos F. Rodriguez.

And Biloxi trails 6-0 in the 4th inning - 3 runs off Jarvis, 3 off Kent Hasler.

Well that’s no fun. They took Rodriguez out after 6 perfect innings. 9 strikeouts. Quite the performance!

LOL. I had a whole post cued up but I deleted it due to how I absolutely sabotaged Figueroa’s outing. Rodriguez had had an absolutely unreal good season.

I know there have been other strong seasons, but he has to be the Brewers’ minor league pitcher of the year, right?

After tonight’s performance, he may have solidified that case entirely. It’s been an incredible year for the young man. I’m pretty dang partial to his 125:37 K:BB ratio. BUT, how about turning it up a notch with a promotion?! Incredible stuff.

Tyler Herb might be going for his 2nd CG in the past month here. He’s made it through 8 IP and 95 pitches. 4-1 Sounds

Is Hobie Harris MAYBE working his way into a possible call-up? I know very little about him beyond the stat line and the big fastball. He clearly walks too many, but .161 BAA and a 100MPH FB with movement(apparently)?

I found these grades on him from last year on a Jays site;

GRADE SCALE:

Fastball: 60

Changeup: 50

Slider: 55

Control: 60

The 60 Control seems...high, but if he's got the FB/SL combo, power arm...seems intriguing. That match what you see??

The biggest thing I see from him when he pitches is his competitive fire. He is a total gamer. He walks guys because he doesn’t give in. He’s also an incredible athlete so he’s a defensive presence on the mound. He doesn’t have the pure stuff of a healthy and dialed Jake Cousins, but when are we going to see that with any consistency? I’ve seen it once ? I’d say he’s  a decent option for a call-up given his output this season but I like Strzelecki’s raw stuff more. And, the staff seems to really like Trevor Kelley (who has been phenomenal in Nashville).

Eh...that's a bit disappointing. When you hear upper 90s with late bite and a potential 60 slider...you think maybe overpowering late inning reliever, the type of guy who can just blow away. Maybe Derrick Turnbow(the short-lived good version).

I know I get a little too hung up on the FB Velocity, but it just provides so much more room for error.

You can have guys like Maddux just painting with a thin brush, but it was usually Smoltz who dominated in the playoffs. The power pitcher.

I do like Strezelecki and Cousins was nasty last year. So I'll be happy to get the later back and have been pleasantly surprised with the prior, but...hoping maybe we had that Knebel down there and we could throw him into a race in Sept-and I realize how silly that sounds!
