The Carolina Mudcats kick off our Sunday in need of a win to split this week's home series against Columbia 3-3, with RHP Logan Henderson making his 4th start for the club (2 innings each in his prior previous outings). 3B Jheremy Vargas returns for his first action since exiting a game early on August 25. 1B Jesus Chirinos has a 19-game on-base streak:

AAA Nashville leads their home series against Memphis 4-1 and has RHP Caleb Boushley (355. ERA) back to make his 2nd start since an early August injury (2 scoreless innings in last outing). DH/C Pedro Severino and C Mario Feliciano both have 7-game hitting streaks:

The Shuckers no-hit yesterday and trail 4-1 in their road series against Rocket City, but have LHP Nick Bennett (5.13 ERA in AA ball) starting tonight and looking to replicate his last outing (4 2/3 scoreless innings, 6 Ks). DH/1B/C Wes Clarke has a 10-game on-base streak:

Man, it's hard to fathom the lack of production we've seen from INF Gabe Holt this season. When you look at the arbitrary categorizing of seasons and see a title like "Scratch that one" or "Seasons we can toss in the trash bin", Gabe will want to do that for 2022. His OPS in now 0.500 at 0.507. With a BA at 0.205, and a fascinating 20 BB to just 23 K in 264 AB's, one might gather his 0.222 BABIP is majorly factoring into the equation here. BUT, I can tell you having watched so many of games from this frustrating 2022 Shuckers season he's also not making good contact on a regular basis. Given the amount of young talent in the middle infield pipeline, he's making it very hard on himself moving forward. Let's hope he can close the season, in the very least, on a higher note.

On the other side of the spectrum in Biloxi, it's time to remind us once again how absolutely fantastic Cam Devanney has been in 2022. I love this young man's game. I find him consistently undervalued amongst Brewers analysts and fans:

I very much see a path for Devanney to make it and stick at the MLB level - if not with the Brewers, somewhere. He's on the doorstep. He just needs to continue working and carving out the path he is currently on. 2022 has been a huge step in the right direction. I see a legitimate athlete, defender, and power bat to play meaningful MLB games. He'll turn 26 in April. He's approaching the best years of his baseball life and I believe he is just scratching that surface. We're lucky to have the 2019 15th round pick in the organization.

I hope he saved a good bit of his $450K bonus.

Heck of a pitching performance today for the combined output of RHP's Logan Henderson and Fernando Olguin (much needed for Olguin's confidence. Well done!):

Henderson: 3 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 0 R, 6 K

Olguin: 6 IP, 2 H, 0 BB, 0 R, 6 K

Mudcats win 6-0 and split the series 3-3. They ride the fine performances of Jace Avina (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 R, 1 K, 1 HR) and Edquarqui Fernandez (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 1 R, 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HR). With Fredericksburg leading Delmarva 9-1 late, it would appear the Mudcats will remain 5 1/2 games back (?) in the second half playoff push.

I continue to love the raw tools of Avina at the dish. For such a young man (he turned 19 on June 3rd), he has that 'you can't teach that' raw power tool. Watch him just golf out this HR off the top of the high wall in LF. There's so much to speculate about in his development:

After Joey Wiemer struck out with the bases juiced to get the 2nd out for the Sounds, Big Jon Singleton takes his 101st walk (he's 4 off 2nd place in the Sounds record book. 10 more walks and he breaks the record), good for 3rd in all of Minor League baseball, laying off two extremely close non-strike calls on the outer half of the plate. Game is now tied 3-3. Bases still juiced here in the 5th for Mario Feliciano who is ahead 3-1 in the count.

OH BABY!!!!! Mario Feliciano just hit an absolute laser shot 103 mph off the bat into the stands in LF on a 3-2 heater. That's 3 HR in this series for Feliciano! What awesome stuff to see from the young Catcher and offensive juggernaut. His power is BACK in the late season at the absolute most important part of the Sounds season. WOW. Sounds lead 7-3. Man, what a season and what an incredibly fun team to watch.

Mario has his power back, baby!  Grand Salami.

He absolutely crushed that ball. Just a rope. You knew it instantly. What a moment.

HOW ABOUT BACK-TO-BACKS?!? Pedro Severino crushes a moon shot high and deep over the wall in left center field. First pitch from reliever Grant Black. WOW. Yes Sir! 8-3 Sounds. Whewwww.

With Mario and Pedro, Brewers can let Narvaez walk as a FA,

Weston Wilson just biffed a routine bouncer at third base to load the bases for Jake Cousins. That ball was biffed. An E5 for Wilson. Bases juiced now. That could be a costly error.

Off of Liberatore……

In absolute fairness to Liberatore, he was probably robbed of two missed strike three calls on Singleton in back-to-back pitches. BUT, hey, good for Feliciano. He had fouled off 2-3 tough heaters. He crushed that ball.

They're just trying to give Cousins some sticky things to get out of.  It's no problem. A growth experience.

Wiemer now has 8 walks in this Redbirds series. Including the game-winning rbi off a walk just a game ago. This is a big development in his approach of late. He's forcing pitchers to earn it. Night and Day from early this season. He's evolving. Work to be done, yes, but big progress being made.

Feliciano is up to the dish with the bases juiced again. 9-3 Sounds as Singleton just walked a run in. Feliciano has 6 RBI's and has a chance to make the Sounds records book if he knocks three across.

Singleton now with two based-loaded walks.  It's good to have an elite skill, even if it's taking a walk.

Ummmm, as Big Jon's number one fan on this board ?:

Elite power. Elite defense. Elite walks. Seriously though, he's incredibly underrated for his glove. Fantastic defender.

Let's at least give him credit in all these departments.

His main problem is he absolutely struggles in lefty splits. Hitting like 0.138 versus lefties.
