Watching every realistic Brewers target slowly get scooped up by other teams as we do nothing notable.

I'm trying not to light myself on fire as I watch the Brewers do nothing and Carlos Correa slip away from the Twins minute by minute.

Well, to be fair this is typically how free agency goes for the Brewers. They wait until February to sign all the rejects who can’t get big deals with anyone else.

Conteras was never a realistic Brewers target.

Sure he was and I am sure the Brewers were in contact with his agent.

Now whether or not his end contract was realistic to the Brewers is a different story. Obviously, it wasn't in the Brewers eyes.

I suppose if you look at it that way, every free agent is a realistic Brewers target. But then, I guess it depends on your definition of "realistic". I think that the match certainly makes sense on paper, but given the finances of this team and its history, they were never realistically going to make a play for Contreras.

I mean the team is pondering extending Wily Adames and I am sure they would sign one of Burnes/Woodruff if they could. If they can do that, they could certainly sign Contreras. They gave a giant contract to Yelich...Braun got over $100mil once. Historically, we just give bad contracts to our own players, versus free agency.

It isn't that they can't, they just choose not to. Whether that is the right move or not is debatable. Just like it was when we signed Cain or tied up 1/5 of the payroll for Yelich.

There were certainly scenarios where Contreras could have been affordable and thus a realistic target. That isn't the case with all players in FA. Some guys wouldn't be affordable even if the world fell apart and their worst case FA scenario happened.

It is also how it goes for about 20 teams historically. Don't really see how anyone can be mad, its not like even one decent trade has gone down at the Winter Meetings.

Anyone expecting the Brewers to compete with the big boys and build their roster through free agency is just going to be perpetually disappointed. This is how it always is and always will be…

I don't mind this at all. Contreras is a big downgrade to Yadi when it comes to the defensive side of the game (Particularly when it comes to handling a pitching staff, and framing), and I think it's quite likely to see an effect (alongside the change in pitching coach) on their mediocre but overachieving staff. Of course the Cardinals are better after the signing than they were before it, but they were always going to get a catcher and I would rather it be a big multi-year deal for Contreras than trading for and extending a younger all-around catcher like Murphy or one of the Blue Jays catchers.

Appears that Contreras is getting a 5-year deal (!!!).

He'll be 31 in May. And has A LOT of wear on him. I get that the Brewers need to make big moves to get over the top, but had they done 5 years on Contreras, that would be financial malpractice.

Awesome. This is what I was hoping to see.

Who has been signed that you would want at the contract they signed?

Not sure I can think of anyone honestly.  Maybe a reliever or two.

Certainly not Contreras.

For what it is worth....the GIF was mostly a joke.
