He’s offered back to the Dodgers for $25,000. If they decline to take him, he’d remain with the Brewers organization.

Not to add injury to insult, but the Brewers seemingly bungled their bullpen this year calling up guys who are 6th or 7th on the depth chart, meanwhile…

In two months' time my money is that one or both of these guys will be bad/injured...pretty much why the Brewers chose to move on from both.  Just like it was a travesty to move on from Bickford even though he is now exactly what he was with the Brewers - an inconsistent back of the bullpen arm.

Always cracks me up when people still cling to Bickford like he was the one who got away.

There are 129 relievers with at least 100 IP since 2021. Here's where Phil ranks in various categories...

98 ERA- (101st) | 94 FIP- (84th) | 0.7 rWAR (86th) | 0.9 fWAR (72nd) | +1.80 WPA (38th)

The Win Probability Added is decent, but everything is else is pretty non-descript. Even then, Bickford's WPA is only fractions ahead of Hoby Milner (+1.43) over the same stretch.

To be fair, Varland left with the bases loaded 2 outs and Counsell gave the ball to a position player who promptly gave up a Grand Slam allowing all 3 of Varlands runners to score. Wonder if CC actually used a real pitcher how many of Varland bases loaded runners score. It will take 26.1IP of 0 runs allowed just to take his ERA from his final line to 3 ERA.  Somebody needs to make sure he's alright and check in on him daily.

Varland would have been a nice shuttle option but was the right move to not mess with the roster to try to keep him all season. Bad teams however should have claimed him and kept him on the roster all season. Brewers did a good job identifying him when he really wasn't ever mentioned in any rule 5 article leading up to the draft.
