If the Shuckers and Mudcats make the playoffs, the 2nd half champ (Biloxi and Carolina) will host Game 1 and G2 and G3 will be at the 1st half champs place.

In the Southern League, if Biloxi then makes the championship best-of-three series, the Shuckers would host games 2 and 3 (the South hosts in every odd numbered year).

So, we'd get MiLB TV and Greg Young's Mudcats call for one game before going into dark mode when the series moves to Down East.

It had better not come down to this (since Carolina holds a 3-game lead with 6 to play), but I assume that Carolina holds the tiebreaker over Lynchburg, on account of a 6-5 record against them this year.

Unless they only look at games played in the second half of the season, in which case we’d lose the tiebreaker 2-1.

I seriously am in a prolonged denial about the inevitable likelihood of zero viewing in Down East. First post-season in over 13 years...and play at the lone Carolina League affiliate with not an ounce of Media exposure? Unbelievable.

Hopefully it doesn't have to come down to that with us facing Salem who hasn't been good.

Big Hype Prospects: Holliday, Merrill, Jobe, Chourio, Crow-Armstrong

September 4th, 2023 at 4:03pm CST • By Brad Johnson

Big Jackson Prospects is back with another edition starring members of the new Jackson Four.

Five Big Hype Prospects

Jackson Chourio, 19, OF, MIL (AA)
(AA) 509 PA, 21 HR, 37 SB, .282/.336/.471

One of the few upper-echelon prospects younger than Holliday, Chourio has spent the entire season in Double-A where he’s held his own against much older competition. He’s been particularly effective of late, delivering four home runs and a .998 OPS in his last 45 plate appearances. Anyone hoping to see him promoted into the NL Central playoff race shouldn’t hold their breath. His defensive skills remain a work in progress. While he has the raw tools to stick in center field, his reads are still inconsistent. Were his glove ahead of his bat, he’d have a better case for a cheeky late-season promotion.

I'm sorry but have to share this. Tell me  you haven't watched Chourio play in one string of thoughts. Won a Gold Glove last year and his defense has definitely improved by my eyes. There isn't a single Shuckers game I've watched to date where I've remotely thought: "Boy, Chourio has to work on those reads. That's the next step for his call-up!". Just a really odd take.

With Wisconsin already eliminated from playoff contention, I wonder if Wilken is promoted to Biloxi to help them in their playoff race.

Wisconsin is technically still in contention because Cedar Rapids won the 1st half so 2nd place in the 2nd half makes the playoffs but it's not a very real chance of making the playoffs. Peoria is 3 games up and I am pretty sure they own the tiebreaker. That means WI needs to go 5-1 against Cedar Rapids this week and Peoria would need to go 1-5 against the Beloit team that Wisconsin just swept. Not very likely.

If I had to bet, I would probably bet Wilken gets a cup of coffee in AA either once Wisconsin is eliminated or once the season is over and then head to Biloxi for their final week.

I don’t see Jackson moving up while Biloxi is still in a playoff race

Same here. I think that ship has sailed. He would have been promoted to Nashville weeks ago around the time Black was but now that Biloxi is in the middle of a playoff race and Nashville is not, might as well keep him there until the end.

It. Is. Time. To go to Salem and take care of business long overdue. Let's support the Mudcats in getting the monkey off their backs!

@wiguy94: More detailed update from Greg Young:

Hello,

Thanks for reaching out and thank you for the coverage.

Should the Mudcats reach the playoffs, then we would travel our radio broadcast and stream audio at carolinamudcats.com from Grainger Stadium.

At the moment, we would not be able to stream any video from Down East. We will do our best, however, to capture footage as the game goes and will post highlights to our social pages.

Thanks,

Greg Young

I'll do my thing (should we be so lucky to hear a playoff broadcast) and post updates and highlights in our Game Thread.

Well that's certainly better than nothing. A little throwback to the old days!

Thanks for the clarification. I thought Wisconsin was eliminated although it still doesn’t sound very hopeful.

Sweeping Beloit is one thing (who also red hot Peoria now plays in their final six-game series) but sweeping the juggernaut that is the Twins' Cedar Rapids Kernels is an entirely different Midwest League High-A feat. Stranger things have happened, yes, but I wouldn't put my wager here. I guess the bright side is if the T-Rats miraculously happened to pull this off we certainly would know they earned it...and then some.

Yeah it's a very small chance. We need to be 4 games better than Peoria this week. So either 5-1 and 6-0 agains the juggernaut Kernels while Peoria also needs to go 1-5 or 0-6 against the really poor Beloit team. The odds are very slim, but as the great Han Solo once said, "Never tell me the odds".

I suddenly had a flashback to pre-radio baseball. An important game. People gathering around outside the telegraph office. A large chalkboard set up with a diamond drawn on it to simulate the action. An employee receives an update & passes it on to a guy with a megaphone. "O'Conner!! single to left field!!!" A cheer emanates from the gathering.

I've only HEARD of this. I was NOT around at the time.

High-A Wisconsin’s final series of the regular season is a 6-game homestand against Twins’ affiliate Cedar Rapids. We’ve won 8 games in a row, but need to keep it up to catch Peoria for a playoff spot. LHP Nate Peterson (3.34 ERA with 75 Ks in 70 IP) starts the opener. LF Hendry Mendez had 6 hits in his last 2 games.

Any news of a Boeve injury? He’s not in tonight’s lineup and didn’t play on Sunday either.

Boeve actually hasn't played in 4-5 games. He didn't appear injured in any way and finished 9 innings his last game at Beloit. BUT, he was not making solid contact in any way for 4 games or so. Had a pretty poor error up the middle on a weak dribbler in the last game. And we haven't seen him since.

We will likely hear about this if we get a Home Post-Game pod with Chris and Kyle tonight. A pod is unlikely - the T-Rats play a matinee game on Wednesday and they rarely do a pod in that scenario. It's either in tonight's broadcast or the post-game Wednesday pod.

AAA Nashville hosts Cardinals’ affiliate Memphis this week, welcoming speedster CF Greg Allen (signed after Yankees’ release) atop the lineup. Rehabbing Julio Teheran looks to improve on his last start (2.1 IP, 4 ER).

The T-Rats face RHP Andrew Morris in his 7th start since his promotion to High-A (Twins 2022 4th Rd pick). By the looks of the raw numbers, never having seen him pitch, it would appear Morris has been adept at working around runners on base. 32 IP, 38 H, 0.295 BAA. The 25:5 K:BB ration obviously helps. The 10 ER and 2.81 ERA feels misleading. Hopefully, the Rattlers can break open the flood gates.

The first place Mudcats’ final regular season series is at Red Sox affiliate Salem. RHP Jesus Rivero (3.44 ERA with 45 Ks in 34 Low-A IP) starts the opening game. LF Jace Avina (@BrewersPD August Player of the Month) returns to action after exiting Friday’s game early.

Regarding Avina's August Player of the Month:

Wonderful to see him rewarded for a tireless season of consistent availability and effort. A true pleasure to watch in the Mudcats uniform.

AA Biloxi plays at White Sox affiliate Birmingham this week, trying to beat out Montgomery for a playoff spot with 12 games remaining. RHP TJ Shook makes his 10th start (23rd appearance - 5.00 ERA with 95 Ks in 81 IP) of 2023. CF Jackson Chourio has a 14-game hitting streak.
