I got to these trade proposals late. Trade 1 seems like a fit for the twins but not as much for the Brewers. Trades 2 and 3, am I crazy for my primary initial thought being that Mitchell is far far more valuable than frelick? Frelick is limited due to lack of power, while Mitchell could be a star. For that reason, I would probably do tier 1 for Julien, but I'm pretty sure the twins would not...or we'd have to add to the trade.

It’s not crazy, but it’s probably not consensus either. Depending how one weights ceiling/floor & likelihood of reaching that ceiling, you can really put Frelick, Mitchell, Wiemer in any order.

Frelick has the least power of the three, but his approach and contact ability give him the highest floor and best chance to realize his ceiling.

Wiemer has the most power of the three, but needs to fix his swing to get there.

Michell has the best total package, but is injured all the time and has a couple big red flags in his limited MLB performance so far with a career 38.3 K% and .441 BABIP.

Topa and Wilson have the same amount of team control. Better numbers? They had practically the same ERA but Topa did it in much higher leverage with dramatically better peripherals.

Topa - 2.61 ERA, 2.93 xERA, 3.15 FIP, 3.55 xFIP, 3.47 SIERA, 1.90 WPA

Wilson - 2.58 ERA, 3.98 xERA, 4.13 FIP, 4.72 xFIP, 4.31 SIERA, 1.32 WPA

Wilson had a marginally better ERA but look at the gap in those peripherals, so no Wilson was not better than Topa.

Fair enough. But saying Topa is "way better" is also an exaggeration. Wilson's age also helps his value. I would guess that in the eyes of most MLB GMs, Bryce Wilson's numbers last year, his young age, along with his pedigree as a one-time top prospect give him more trade value than Justin Topa.

A similar package for Polanco from us would have been Peguaro, Houser (M's ate 8 million of Deslafani deal), Lara, and maybe Edwin Jimenez. That still not be better than what the Twins got and is likely more than I would have given up for him. Probably a win/win deal unless Gonzalez turns into a star.

You're definitely underrating what Minnesota got.

Topa is way better than Wilson.

Houser is better and cheaper than Desclafani.

Gonzalez is a top 100/fringe top 100 prospect.

Bowen is a guy with good stuff and has some industry hype.

I'm not underrating at all:

The sum of Houser/Wilson could be considered fairly close to a wash to the sum of Topa/Desclafani (bonus: Houser/Wilson also easier to spell).

Assuming that's reasonably accurate, then the "couple of prospects" would also have to be comparable to the prospects the Mariners gave up.  "Couple of prospects" wasn't a "toss off" comment at all.

So my analogy, while lacking elaboration, was not intended dismissively.  It was definitely in the neighborhood, and that's all my intent was.

In all, it was probably a pretty good trade for both MN & SEA.

Now that Burnes is going to the Orioles lets trade Peralta to the Twins.

I would do this trade in a heartbeat but not sure the Twins would agree to it.

Brewers get: Lee (3B), Soto (SP) and Festa (SP)

Twins get: Peralta

This would give the Twins a starting pitcher they need after losing Gray in FA.  A big plus is that Peralta is not all that expensive.

The Brewers get a MLB ready 3B.  Lee could probably start right now for the Brewers and probably put up close to AS level production at 3B.  Soto is a the long term project and then Festa would be a really good add.  I came away impressed seeing him pitch a few times in the minors.  He looked to do better in AAA than he was doing in AA.  He has developed some really good command recently and he has a nice slider.  He has also bumped up his velocity on his FB going from low 90's in college to now throwing consistently in the mid 90's and topping out around 97MPH when I saw him pitch.

I think a trade like this would really help both the Brewers and Twins.  A lot of the help for the Brewers would come in '25.  Festa could be a nice pitching prospect to put between Misio and Gasser.  Festa probably tops out around a #2 or #3 pitcher but he could be an ace if everything goes correctly.

In '25 you could have an IF of Turang (SS), Lee 3B, Black 2B and Ortiz Util.  That only leaves 1B as a spot to upgrade at in the IF.  Defensively Turang at SS should be good while Lee and Black provide at least above average offense at their respective positions.

Ok, then what do we do with Wilken, who has to be knocking on the door late 2024 or for sure in 2025...

Wilken moves to 1B?

Yes Wilken to 1B or a corner OF spot if Wiemer or Mitchell don't pan out.
