Brewers sign Gary Sanchez (Deal Official, $3M plus Incentives)

I’ve been concerned that the lack of urgency to get this across the line (and thus into camp) signaled an injury setback (e.g. new medical procedure).

As such, I’ll be thrilled if Sanchez is healthy enough to hit and catch to start the season.

All I know is that I like 3 million plus incentives WAY better than 7 million guaranteed.

This way he has to play well to get the $.  Love that!

Maybe it just a word choice thing, but this makes it sound like you're confusing silence in terms of updates vs. a lack of urgency.

Clearly the issue(s) they found in the wrist was(were) concerning enough to force a restructuring of the deal.  I'd guess there was no lack of urgency at all, just the proper due diligence re: the medicals and then renegotiating accordingly.

Doesn’t the restructure (if that’s what it is) indicate that the wrist injury is a real concern? Given that it seems the Brewers often have bad luck with guys who are “day to day with shoulder tightness” and end up missing four months, I don’t like this.

Matt Arnold is a shrewd and smooth operator. I’m guessing he’s not all that worried about the wrist. I’m betting when he saw the medical file after the initial physical, he realized he had more to bargain with than originally thought and promptly used it to his advantage.

Eric Haase absolutely sucks and I’m quite relieved he’s no longer seriously in the plans. However, if the wrist injury was very serious, I‘m thinkin they’d rather save money and roll the dice with a healthy Haase.

Gary Sánchez suffered a hand injury during a workout which was why the deal with the Brewers stalled.
An interesting wrinkle into the Gary Sánchez signing. Last season, Sánchez suffered a wrist injury in early September and ended his season. However, he told Brewers beat reporter Todd Rosiak that it wasn’t the wrist that held up the deal with the club; it was a hand injury that he suffered several weeks ago during a workout. This doesn’t seem to be all that concerning since Sánchez was cleared for baseball activities, however, it sheds light on the delay of the signing.
