He's a little bit of a risk because his lows have been pretty low, but I don't know where you're going to get a guy with a power ceiling in the 30-35 HR range for $7 million.  He's got 173 career home runs, and a .469 career slugging pct.  I think he proved he had more in the tank with the Padres last year.  He's only 31.  That he can catch is a big plus.  On days he catches, you can DH Contreras and keep his bat in the lineup too and keep both guys fresh.  They lost a significant contributor with Caratini gone.  Now they not only replaced the offense that Victor produced, they upgraded.

This is the key to the deal.  The DH spot should be used to keep our 2 best hitters (Yelich and Contreras) as fresh as possible throughout the year.

VS RHP

RF Mitchell

LF Frelick

C Contreras

DH Yelich

VS LHP

RF Wiemer

LF Yelich

C Sanchez

DH Contreras

Who said that?

Nobody specifically said "2/3rds", but plenty of people called/speculated for him to be the/a DH.

"Yep guessing he will be the DH"

"This move is about filling the DH position and adding power to the lineup after last year's mostly punchless lineup"

"especially if he's getting picked up more as a DH than a backup C. "

"The power potential from the DH position just looks totally leveled up compared to last season. "

"I'm assuming Sanchez will catch 1-2 times a week and DH 2-3 times a week. "

"A Bauers/Sanchez platoon at DH seems like it would be fairly effective."

"Brandon Belt and Gary Sanchez would make for a great DH platoon."

I'm sure Sanchez will get some DH at bats, particularly vs. LHP, but I feel like the bigger add is that he lets Contreras DH more. When our best or second best hitter is a catcher, it seems like great value to spend on a plus backup that lets you keep more of the wear on tear off the primary C.

You must see a level of excitement in those statements that I’m missing.

You yourself even stated that he’d be great against 30% of pitchers.  What makes you think he’d be getting 2/3rds of the DH at-bats and that everyone is excited by it as endaround was implying?

I don’t know the context of other conversations but you’re totally taking my comment out of context. I was talking about Sanchez being a weak side platoon DH. If you did this with my comment then how can I know you didn’t just do the same with the others? Big time red flag.

I think the underrated part of this deal is the Brewers ability to improve catchers.  Every catcher that has come into our system has improved defensively,  If this ends up being a transition year and the Brewers end up being sellers at the deadline Gary Sanchez could be one heck of a trade chip if he maintains his offense and becomes average or above average defensively.  He's got a pretty good arm and decent pop time.  The knock against him was blocking balls.  If we can improve that he becomes a very attractive piece for just about any contending team except for LA, Philly and Atl.

So I can see this working out great for the Brewers whether they contend or not.  As long as he doesn't contract Jesse Winker disease.

I would be very apprehensive in dealing Quero at this time. Here we have a very high quality defensive catcher that has made significant strides in his hitting at 21 years of age. Contreras is most likely heading into his 2nd contract within the next 2 years and will most likely need to be replaced (traded) after that time. I would hate for the Brewers to have a revolving door at one of the most important position on the ballclub. I believe trading him would be a very shortsighted decision at this time. I would wait another year to see how much Quero can improve his hitting and then re-evaluate the position next off-season.

I get it.

I would only trade him for controllable pitching, which, to me anyway, is far more important than any other position.

You asked, "who said that?", and I assumed you were referring to endaround's comment about him being the/a DH so I provided examples of people saying that he would be a DH.  Why would I think that you were referring to his words, "WooHoooo!"?

Why would you assume that I was only referring to part of what I highlighted?

I felt it was pretty obvious that I was referring to endaround’s hyperbole about a back up catcher, likely part-time DH, being signed and that Brewerfan was all excited and claiming he’ll be playing a majority of the time at DH and not just him being a DH.

It seemed pretty obvious to me from reading through the thread that very few were claiming he’d be the primary DH nor were they super excited about it. You going thru and picking out times anybody mentioned DH (likely out of context) didn’t refute that.

Just saw a tweet from Todd Rosiak that there is no expectation right now as to when/if a deal with Sanchez might be done. I thought that was interesting... something must be holding it up.

This article from the Brewers' official site speculates that Sanchez might be signed to be the Brewers' primary DH, and that they could keep Contreras, Sanchez and Haase on the opening day roster. I'd certainly dislike this signing more if that's the case.

I like the thought of Sanchez playing every time a LHP is on the mound either as DH or C, but he shouldn't be in all the time when they're facing a RHP. We have a lot of LH bats to put out there against RHP.

At $7M, he will get more PAs than the traditional back-up catcher, but I hope the extra roster spot is used for someone else, Haase is sent to AAA and Sanchez plays C some days, DH on others, and I'm fine with him spending some time on the bench to allow lefties like Mitchell and Frelick to get more playing time.

"The most successful (people) know that performance over the long haul is what counts. If you can seize the day, great. But never forget that there are days yet to come."

I am guessing the total compensation is agreed upon but maybe not the terms of how/when it is paid.

Or there's a deal that's almost done to open up a 40 man spot.

Or both.

Follow up from Robert Murray

leaning towards @StearnsFTWis correct and there is a corresponding trade holding this up. Or else there is a difference in opinion on a buyout on a 2nd year option? If it was a failed physical, I think that would be out by now.

40 man is full right now. I would imagine that is the holdup, as they need a corresponding move.

Otherwise, something had to have come up in the physical.

I kind of cannot believe this situation. I have no memory of a time where any single bit of info or news about a player and team situation like this just evaporated for this long. Like dude needs to be in camp to work with pitchers. Does anybody have any clue or thoughts on what could be happening?

Kind of a weird one but we would have heard if he was back on the market I think so I'd guess one of the theories like they are waiting to make a roster move. Failed physical still possible but those usually get sorted pretty quick I think. Maybe they need to sign Woodruff and IL him?

I tried to log in on my iPad. Turns out it was an etch-a-sketch and I don't own an iPad. Also, I'm out of vodka.
