"Second worst was Martín Maldonado, who is incidentally my mental stand-in for the concept of an automatic out."

I listened to a little bit of Turang's interview on Foul Territory (Aj Pierzynski, Todd Frazier, Erik Kratz podcats) and he spoke about being directed by his Dad this past offseason to hit more low line drives, rather than sell out for power.  It's somewhat reminiscent of when Jean Segura got offseason help on his swing and turned into a substantially better hitter.

when you can fly and teams can't overshift to limit hits on solid contact on the ground, cutting back on the HR cuts in favor of slashing yourself around the bases makes a ton of sense if you don't have 25+HR pop.

Totally. Turang's current profile wouldn't hack it before 2023. But now, he not only has a chance of getting on base with line drives and ground balls, but his premium defense and baserunning acumen suddenly make that style of player really valuable, and I suspect those players will begin getting paid, thus incentivizing more players to play to their natural ability rather than try to become sluggers.

According to a graphic I just saw on mlb network Turang is now 10th in all of baseball in WAR….just an amazing first 65 games

I've long been a Turang believer...I thought he was a Trea Turner type of talent(though...I never thought he was going to be THAT good, more like Trea -25 BA, -70 SLG, but the .370 OBP, great defense, etc...etc...).

Now, there's a whole garbage bin of guys I liked that I was wrong about(need Joey Wiemer to get going so he doesn't end up there) but...it's almost more fun when you follow a guy, he struggles, people lose faith and then he explodes onto the scene!

I was never really on Turang's bandwagon until just before his debut, and I read something that quoted one of the fangraphs scouts (Longenhagen, probably). He was asked what prospects he felt were "underrated," or maybe, "overlooked," by the rest of the scouting community, and he mentioned how much he liked Turang. It was then that I wondered if he was showing more on a day-by-day basis than what the underlying stats were revealing. Certainly, he's a stud on a day-by-day basis. He can go 0-4, with a BB, SB, 1-run scored. Doesn't look like much unless you are watching the game, and notice how his speed and instincts on the basepaths all but scored the run on their own. You watch the game, and his 2 or 3 gold-glove plays on defense saved runs in the later innings. He's such a good ballplayer.

I was very, very frustrated last year with his swing.  After he came back from Nashville, he was standing tall... what?  He took the initiative with his dad to get back to what he does well offensively.  Good job by the Brewers to not try and change him.

His defense is crazy.  That play at the end of the game from the hole at short?  How do you get that type of velocity on the ball without setting your feet?

I'm very happy he is a Brewer.  Hopefully he will be one for a long time.
