If it wasn't for the awful version of him we saw last year, I doubt there'd be much resistance.

Yup

He was acquired via trade for Kolten Wong, not signed as a free agent.

You know what I meant, sorry for the confusion.  I should have said he was our big acquisition, my bad.

I thought Contreras was the big acquisition of the 2023 offseason?

Wong made $10M in 2023, Winker only made $8.25M.

How much did Contreras make last year?

$1.55M. And Ruiz made $0.72M. So the Contreras acquisition increased payroll $0.83M (plus another ~1M for Payamps), while the Winker acquisition decreased payroll by $1.75M. But really, what a silly thing to be arguing, lol.

The Winker trade didn't decrease payroll as the Brewers sent the difference in salary to the Mariners.

I'm talking about $ here, how much did Contreras cost us vs Winker?

You know this, you just like to argue for arguments sake.

Wong is the player they traded for Winker, so Jesse’s salary didn’t actually add anything to the payroll.

I was just pointing out that the largesse of his contract and the big-ness of his acquisition were being overstated in the grand scheme of things.

They moved Wong to open a spot for Turang with the hopes Winker would bounce back to his pre-injury form and provide better DH production than McCutchen did for $8.5M the year before.

Winker plus Turang was like $10M cheaper than Wong plus McCutchen.

To be precise, the Brewers included cash with Wong because he made more so probably closer to neutral from a payroll standpoint.
