Another runner stranded by Ortiz.

Oops.

Joey isn’t the only guy who is having trouble hitting right now but I’m not going to shed a tear that he’s not in the lineup for a day.

Listen, just because Ortiz has zero put outs today doesn’t mean his defense hasn’t already saved us multiples runs 🙂

The very interesting article about Ortiz on this site is so simple and exactly what I've been saying. You cannot afford to play a defense first player if nobody else is hitting. It was refreshing to read common sense. Play the best players at this point. Stop hoping the guy is going to suddenly find it. He's been horrible from game 1 to game 155. Hoping this is the day.

Batting numbers are easy to see and quantify. You can quantify defense to some extent, but there's no single stat that works.  Also, defense is often more team than individual. So if you put a really good defense behind a Priester or Quintana, who get lots of ground balls, your winning percentages over the course of games will be pretty good.

Ortiz has been a key to our success this season. But I hope that in playoff ball, when each game is so important, Murph will sub out Ortiz for Mona in critical hitting situations. Mona is hitting .288 right now, and he's proved he's really good in clutch situations.

Ortiz was horrible for the first 50 games with a .441 OPS  (25 wRC+) over 166 PA.

Then from game 51 to game 124 he posted a .728 OPS over 257 PA (104 wRC+), that is not horrible.

From game 125 through yesterday he has posted a .500 OPS (38 wRC+) over 74 PA.

He's been horrible for 240 PA and slightly above average for 257 PA this year.

I was waiting for a stat head to come back with a defense of Ortiz. 😆 What is he hitting on days that end in y? By this logic is a half season all star I guess. Incredible
