Not to diminish the support the T-Rats have received because it's been terrific but personally, if you only had one affiliate in the state I'd much rather have the AAA team closer, whether it be Madison, the Lake Country or the Fox Valley.

I agree with this and I would assume the Brewers would as well. Makes for a much easier 'shuttle' scenario for their bullpen and you can also rehab guys against competition a few notches higher without having to put them on a plane.

Ortiz (4.5 WAR) and Hall (0.8 rWAR) have already outproduced what Burnes did (4.5 rWAR) in his lone Baltimore season. The Brewers also presumably put some of that cost savings on Burnes towards signing Hoskins (1.1 WAR in his two Milwaukee seasons).

Maybe they'd be better off had they kept Burnes and took the QO and found replacements for Ortiz/Hall/Rhys production from the last two plus years elsewhere, but they've already won the 2nd most games in MLB since 2024 so there is a lot more room for downward mobility there than upward in any hypothetical.

There is the problem with Metrics. bWAR has Burnes at 3.9 and Ortiz and Hall combined at 3.9. So by their model it’s been a wash and both Brewers at or near replacement level so far this season.

If it was as simple as looking at players who left and ones that arrived and presuming a connection, one could stretch these arguments out infinitum.

The point is: a team like Milwaukee is never going to be a player in today’s free agency so the veteran for prospects move is essential, and this one at least is looking like they swapped out their best player and the return didn’t hurt the team, but it didn’t really better them either which when this is the lifeline of your team, kind of sucks.

Very true, a wash is pretty much a loss if that is how you operate the organization. You are not going to win much of anything getting 4 WAR total over a number of years from multiple players but can help win it all with 4 WAR from one player in one season.

One thing we can only speculate on though.

Maybe we don’t lose to the Mets in the playoffs 2-1 if Burnes is on the roster.

I’m still pissed at Burnes for giving up a 3-0 lead against AZ on back to back home runs in 2023.
