I see the topic of Skubal coming up a lot. But people seem to overlook the fact that the May trade wouldn’t have been done if the Skubal trade happened.
So the Brewers have May,  Henderson, Romero, and whoever was going with Henderson to Detroit (pick two… Lara? Payne? Adams? Pena? Or Adamczewski?), instead of Skubal, Ragsdale, and Frias.

Seems like a win for the Crew

I mean, kind of too early to say on so many counts.  We don’t even know what Skubal and May will do in the playoffs, we don’t know how much of a factor JoJo will be, let alone we don’t know what the careers of Pena, Frias and Ragsdale will be yet.

I totally get that point of view. Ragsdale could be another Brantley from the CC deal. But we considered that win, just by making the playoffs.

But the way I see it, May also has a mutual option for next year that’s a little bit less than Woodruff got for hi QO this spring. Which could be activated.
Five more years of Henderson, and 6 years of the two or three prospects they didn’t trade, and 8-10 more starts from May, seem to be a lot to give up for anybody. Even if Ragsdale and Frias become all stars, They were pretty much blocked here and may have not gotten the chance here anyway. I’m guessing that Chourio, Payne, and Lara will be the outfield in Milwaukee three years from now.

Two is greater than one, you are correct

Said it at the time of the proposal that it made no sense to deal Henderson in a skubal deal.

Sometimes the best deals are the ones you don’t make. Although skubal was the deadline prize, coming off injury and with Hendersons numbers, it’s not a guarantee he would be better than what we already had.

the whole point of a skubal deal was to get 4 great starters for playoffs but losing Henderson makes it pointless.   And then we lose a strong young starter for many years and a stud like Pena and probably Adamczewski. Like 10+ years of projectable starting talent for a half season of a potential “upgrade”.

The May deal is looking really smart so far. Deceptive numbers that are playing better in Milwaukee and now we have 4 solid starters and arguably the best playoff rotation in baseball without overselling the farm

This is one area why the playoffs could potentially end differently this year. Last year it was Freddy Peralta as a starter, Miz pitching bulk innings and trying to fill out 9 innings for every other game in the playoffs. This year they have real starters that can pitch quality innings and don't have to lean so heavily on Chad Patrick, Aaron Ashby and Jared Koenig(how soon we forget).

No, that was not the point. The point was a Miz/Skubal 1-2 punch and to a lesser degree the 1-2-3 punch with Harrison. You don’t need four great starters in the postseason.

On another note:

What Skubal does in the regular season is rather meaningless to the Dodgers. They didn’t acquire him for the regular season. It’s also why such a trade was much too risky for the Brewers and why they likely opted not to make it. It isn’t like we needed Skubal to make the postseason like we did with CC. We would have been giving up massive value completely for his value in the postseason. A place where he could have a singular bad start in the opening round to help sink the entire season. Or the offense drops a turd like the Dodgers offense just did and it doesn’t matter how good he pitches.

That being said, I bet the clubhouse is hyped that the man they would have needed to trade to get Skubal just beat him H2H on the road. I just hope something similar can happen in the postseason.

The thing I love about Henderson is that he consistently gets the job done without overpowering stuff……just executes pitches time after time……..pretty old school stuff.

That approach should allow him to continue to be successful as he ages.

I'd be hard pressed to say that the difference between Skubal and Henderson this season is worth the remaining 4-5 seasons of control of Henderson alone.  Trading him plus top prospects would have been a big loss, unless there was an accurate crystal ball saying that the move guarantees the Brewers win it all this year.

In watching the game yesterday - Henderson is a very unique pitcher.  His combination of movement and control - and even somewhat his body type - reminds me of watching "Greg Maddux - lite" from the perspective of getting ahead and getting people out with guile and guts.

And yes - when he fielded that weak grounder from Tucker and beat him to the bag - I might have been hooting and hollering a little bit.
