What's wrong with Yohannis Perez?

Posted

I just did a quick check of his stats, and he currently has a line of: .218 avg, .559 OPS, 2 doubles, 2 triples, 9 RBI and has 36 strikeouts while only 11 walks.

His defense doesn't look any better either, with 8 errors in 36 games. Is taking a year off from baseball still having this effect on him(ie, shaking the rust off, adjusting to american pitching, ect), or is he just not as good as advertised?

I vote for this option. That might just be because I watched alot of Alay Soler's starts for the Mets last year, but the most recent Cuban imports have not impressed (Kendry Morales of the Angels also is bad). I guess Yuniesky Betancourt is a decent glove man, but this most recent wave has been lackluster.

Yep he was out of baseball for 2 years. He's not terrible, there is potential there, but I see where you're coming from as he didn't hit the ground running, so to speak.

Errors in the minors are a joke, bad fields and official scorers with no clue. This entire season is probably a mulligan for him, though we should see some 2nd half improvement.

Nothing wrong actually. Just knocking off some rust. He started out with way worse than these numbers. The last two weeks he has started to heat up pretty well. 2 hits last night.

That's what i was hoping to hear: Improvement. I was just curious as there was alot of talk after we signed him, all the way into Spring Training. Since then i had heard nothing.

wasnt there talk of him possibly making the big league club out of spring?

Yes, that's why his play this year has been a bit underwelming. I understand it's probably the rust, but underwelming nonetheless.

2 more hits today puts him over .220. After his horrendous 1st month, if Perez ends up around .250, I'd say we have a chance to have a real prospect here.

Looks like Perez is now hitting the "wall". He started out hitting around.100, then knocked off the rust and really started to hit, getting almost to .230. Now he's back under the Mendoza line as of today. Paying the price of inactivity over the past 2 years. Still, he's in AA, and next year may be the real indicator of any actual chance to make it.

Lately, whenever someone starts a thread like this, we invariably send you to the Transactions Thread for a move that impacts the discussion shortly thereafter, as in "When will Parra get bumped up?" -- a bit eerie, really.
