anyone use a handkerchief?

Well, my dad always had them on him (not sure if he does anymore), but I was wondering if anyone uses them anymore. I ask because I always seem to grab a handful of tissues each morning to stuff in my pocket, in case I get a stuffy nose (I have allergy issues at times, which is especially important since Phoenix has such poor air quality). Sometimes I'll forget I have Kleenex in my pocket, or I'll feel guilty about not using them and put them in my pants' pocket a 2nd or third day (at which point they pretty much start falling apart in my pocket). Throw in that even when I shave, if I need to use Kleenex at noon or 2pm, I'm likely to have little white fuzzies left on my stubble.

Anyone have similar debates and either switched to handkerchiefs or opted to stick with tissues?

When my father-in-law passed about five years back I got his set of old handkerchiefs (clean and neatly folded of course)...at first I was apathetic and maybe even disgusted by the thought of using them, but I've really come to appreciate them. They just strike me as a more easily manageable than a wad of tissues, and they look, well, classier as well. I always keep one in my inside jacket pocket.

Like Mike said though, get a bunch of them since you'll go through them like socks.

my dad's got them stocked everywhere. he's got them in the chair, in the couch, in the car, in his shirts, everywhere. He's always prepared. I personally will probably never use them.

It's completely gross and luckily I don't have nose issues very often, but I never grew out of that little kid "use my sleeves as a napkin" phase. Please don't judge me.

where do you buy hankerchiefs? or do you just cut up old shirts?

A place like Kohl's department store has them, anything ranging from the really cheap kind to the "classier" kind of handkerchiefs.

I usually keep a handkerchief in my pocket for when I don't have ready access to Kleenex. I'm too prone to doing a load of laundry and then finding pulverized Kleenex dust all over the load. I also keep one with every winter coat because my nose always runs in cold weather.

I think I got my plain white ones at Penney's. I also have some old-school, pretty ones from my grandmother - although I use those more for show than for their intended purpose. If you buy handkerchiefs that you intend to use for more than show, spring for the 100% cotton. It's a lot softer than the blends.

My dad uses them also, but he usually tore his in half since they're kind of bulky and he used them everyday on the farm. I carry one with me at work, but i rarely have a runny nose. I use it more so to wipe the seat from my brow and neck since I'm pretty active at work and have to deal with customers. Nobody wants to talk to a sweaty guy.

Kleenex is way to cheap for me to blow my nose into basically some snot crusted rag

If you're washing and caring for them like you should, they shouldn't be snot encrusted.

You could never convince me to carry one......something about carrying around a rag full of my own mucus all day doesn't thrill me.

Only time I use them is if I have a bad cold and need to blow my nose a few times during the night. It's better to have one hanky than a doezn crumpled up pieces of tissue all over the floor.

I never was a "hankie" kind of guy. Not to be gross, but with my allergies, the thing would be soaked in an hour and then I'd have to carry it around in my pocket or whatever. Granted, my allergies are MUCH better now that I'm in AZ (and on medication that actually works), but back in the day it was pointless to have anything less than a box of kleenex next to me at all times.

My son does, he's 5. His grandma taught him to carry one.

And they sell them at places like Farm and Fleet and farm supply stores. Andrew got his at "the co-op".

It seems to be a generational thing. My dad and grandpa always carried one. I've always been a Kleenex guy. It doesn't seem like too many in my generation (genX) use a handkerchief.
