I'm not impressed with Bill Hall

I hate to admit it, but I am really getting angry watching Bill Hall at the plate. It seems as if he has no pitch selection. And more importantly with that home run he hit yesterday, he watched it and flipped his bat. It seems like Hall has become full of himself, and it is too bad. When he came up he was a really nice guy who hustled and played the game the way it was meant to be played. It seems like this year he is just cocky and irrogant, and his numbers don't even back it up. It is fine with me if someone hits 40 home runs a year for them to flip the bat and watch the ball, but for someone who has 10 or 11, it is patheic. I have no doubt in my mind that if Hall was hitting the way he did last year, this team is much better. The team lacks a guy in the #5 hole, and that is where Hall could produce, but he just isn't getting the job done. But yet you have to keep him there because he gets paid money, honestly right now, I would like to see Hart or Gross in center and the other one in right, and see how that works. If Gabe Gross played all year, he would already have surpassed the production of Hall. It is a shame, but it seems like Hall has had enough time to work out of it and he just hasn't got the job done.

To be fair, the ball he hit yesterday was a no doubter. But I agree that I'm starting to get fed up.

i'm still a fan, I'm just saying that Gross and Hart deserve playing time over Hall right now and it is ridiculous to sit Hart because Gross is hot and not sit Hall. Gross and Hart deserve to play, IMO, hall needs to fight for his position, he has been a huge dissapointment.

 

also, Braun's was a no doubter too, and he put is head down and ran to first base, I know he is a rookie, but that isn't the point.

Billy's got an .898 OPS over the past 8 days. I'm not saying he's got it all figured out now, but it's an encouraging sign.

what is Gross', his production has to be better if not just as good, and Hart needs to be in the lineup everyday, there is no excuse for him grabbing pine because Gross is hot, the team has no speed if Hart is not in that lineup, especially with as little as Weeks is seeing the field.

It was not ridiculous to sit Hart. He was going through a bad stretch that had lasted since late June. He wasn't getting on base and he looked fatigued. Remember Hart has never played full time over a major league season.

 

Hall has never really gotten hot this year, and it's not been a real good year for him, but he hasn't fallen off the earth. He does have 31 doubles, so he's on pace for close to 40 and he's hitting just below his career averages.

 

Guys don't have career years every year. That's why they call them "career" years. If Hall gets to 15-17 HR, 40 2B, and hits .265-.270 and drives in a few more runs the rest of the way, that's not all that bad.

Beware, regarding Gross's production. He plays vs. RHP only, for the most part, which plays to his strengths. He's really not an everyday player on this team.

Billy Hall was always a bit of a hacker. Those guys don't often have long successful careers. It's possible he peaked at his age 26 season and has reverted to the mean.

I have to agree Hall looks like a guess hitter. When he is off he looks really bad. He still strikes out a lot and whenever he is up in a big situation he looks like he wants to be the hero and puts more pressure on himself, many times leading to strikeouts.

the strikouts I don't mind, Adam Dunn is one of my favorite players, and if you look at his strikouts he looks terrible, but his production is amazing, the strikouts aren't the problem.

I like Bill Hall, but he ALWAYS stares at his long balls, regardless of whether or not they go over the fence.

I'm still a believer in Hall, but yeah, it's annoying and a bit embarrassing when a guy who's having a down year Cadillacs it. Braun or Fielder can get away with a bit of that because it's fine to be confident when your numbers support that confidence. When there's a disconnect between attitude and performance is when you get worried about how hard the guy is working to fix what's messed up, or if he may be too arrogant to admit it's a problem and not just bad luck.

Hall isn't a guess hitter. His eye is decent. He's just a low average hitter. He'll hit .260-.270 and get on base at around .330-.340. Not great, but hardly shows he guesses.

His career batting average is .266. He's hitting .262. His career oba is .322; he's sitting at .323 right now. His slugging is down from his career norm: .435 vs. .471. However, among CF'ers in the NL who qualify for the batting title, that's 4th highest in the league, behind Rowand (.516), Beltran (.511), and Chris Young (.465).

 

fwiw, Torrii Hunter's career line is 272/322/471. Mike Cameron's 251/.341/.446. While we hope for better from Hall, his 262/323/435 is probably average for a CF'er. I think it was overly optimistic to expect another season like 2006 from him, but give him a full season at CF. I suspect next season that slugging will rise back in the .460-.480 range. That will make him one of the better hitting CF'ers in the league.

I'm with you BHF. I'm actually considering changing my name. I'm giving him the rest of the year but this could be my main offseason move.

 

He is what he is as a hitter but I've had it with the HR admiration--not to mention the admiration of balls that bounce off the wall. I haven't seem him take that easy, opposite field swing that I loved so much since before his injury. He's not a pull hitter and he's trying to be one so he can admire his shots.

 

I still am a huge Bill Hall fan. I have a signed pink bat, both bobbles, a jersey and jersey shirt as well as a political endorsement as a name on this site.

 

I would love nothing more than to see him revert back to the player who busted his hump every day and worked his way back into a productive #5 hitter.

If people realized that last year was his career year and that he is not the pernianal all start that posters claimed last year. He is an above avergage player that is struggling this year. If he was the player that some thought he was Brewers would have had a stick to bat that could produce in the middle third. IMO he should end up batting in the 6 spot for most of his career and play an average CFer.

Not much. If he is a better man than previuosly he would revert back to his old self.

Bill Hall has been the biggest disappointment on this team not named Rickie Weeks this year. I like Hall, though, and am hoping September is a career month for him. Oh what could have been with this team had we not had so many disappointments/injuries to Weeks, Hall, Sheets, Suppan, etc.
