I think this is a great thing for the Rockies to do. I picked them a week and a half ago to win the wild card, I can't turn against them now, and this only solidifies it.

 

Does anyone have any idea how much a share would be for the Coolbaugh family?

This is the article that Marquettefan was referring to. I read it about a week ago, and I have to admit, it got a little dusty in the room as I was reading it, especially toward the end. I meant to link it here, but didn't see an appropriate thread at the time. A year ago at this time, my wife and I had boys ages 5 and 3 and another one on the way. I can't even imagine what his wife is going through right now.

 

I agree with everyone about what a classy move this is by the Rockies players, and that it means more than just cutting a check to the family. Go Rockies!

And I agree with FTJ, I've always wondered why they didn't make coaches and pitchers where helmets. Even those "snow boarder" soft yet become rigid when hit hard helmets may help.

That seems like a knee-jerk reaction to a very unfortunate event. From the way it sounds, a helmet would not have helped Coolbaugh, since the ball struck him in the neck. Should they wear neck protectors as well? Should all fans wear helmets as well, since more fans get injured than coaches? It's just something that gets filed in the "Stuff happens" category, and move on.

Actually right after it happened, their 1st base coach (Glenallen Hill) started wearing one. I guess he got smoked a couple of times in spring training and Coolbaugh was the final wake-up call.

It was a tragedy, and a very freak accident. It was a one in a million (or more) thing that happened.

So, all coaches should wear a helmet, because it won't hurt them? Requiring helmets for coaches because of this incident is crazy. It was a freak accident. As with most things in life, the coaches have the choice to wear a helmet. There is no rule against it.

And fans are always watching the batter? Nobody's talking business, or distracted by an usher, or distracted by their kids. The fact is still that there are a lot more fans that get injured, and seriously hurt, by foul balls than coaches. I am not saying that fans should wear helmets, but just pointing out that they would need to wear helmets before any coaches.

 

This dialogue is off-topic so that's all I'll say on the side topic. On the main topic, the Coolbaugh death was a tragedy, and it is awesome of the Rockies to include his widow in their playoff winnings. Kudos to the Rockies!

A good friends younger brother got hit int he head while pitching, right in the temple. Ended up being admitted to the hospital suffering from a brain bleed, and swelling. He almost had to have brain surgery to relieve the pressure, luckily he's doing better but has speech problems associated with brain trauma that he's working with a neuro speech therapist and should make a full recovery. If he would have had a helmet, he probably wouldn't have suffered such horrible brain trauma.

 

So please don't just say "Meh.. it's one in a million" when there are plenty of cases of brain injuries to couches, pitchers and players to warrant maybe the investigation of requiring some form of head protection.

I never said anything about pitchers getting hit being one in a million. I have watched, and followed, baseball for over 20 years. This is the first time I've ever heard of a coach being killed. If you can site other examples please do so. I'm just saying that requiring helmets is overkill, because the likelihood of a ball hitting a coach in the head is very, very remote.

 

I'm often very surprised this doesn't happen more often to pitchers. I play a lot of competitive softball, and many pitchers are starting to wear shinguards and facemasks. This isn't really feasible to do in hardball though.
