  1. Credible people confirmed that the Brewers weren't just taking calls on him, but were actively trying to trade him. It stands to reason that they didn't get the offers that the Santana fanboys here take for granted they should get for him. As for Santana being a good young player under team control and Stearns being loathe to trade players like that, I'd wager that Stearns doesn't actually think Santana is really that good. He seems to be the anti-Melvin in terms of valuing defense, which is a good thing, and there's a pretty decent chance Santana ends up being a fairly inconsistent and frustrating player who never lives up to the promise, a la Corey Hart. Why so negative about Santana? And Hart for that matter, who had a really nice career before having it derailed by knee injuries? Hart absolutely lived up to his promise imo. Why shouldn't fans be excited by Santana's offense in 2017? Your use of "fanboys" hints that you aren't a fan of him. By the way, I'm not trying to incite an argument. I'm just scratching my head here about what's to hate about a 24-yo who took a big step forward & just had a great season at the plate. Those guys aren't easy to find.
  2. I'd like taking on Cole as a risk/reward type of project, & be ok with flipping him or letting him walk after a couple seasons. The problem is that PIT will probably ask for value closer to the CY candidate he was prior to 2016. Even with his injury issues, his velocity is still big. His HR/FB rate was through the roof last season, so much so that it's hard to think it was only down to bad luck. The other rate stats that stand out are that he gave up more fly balls, & a significant uptick in balls that batters pulled (which would jibe with more HRs surrendered). If he could be had for a reasonable price, he's a guy I'd love to see us roll the dice on. Just seems like he has the stuff to work with, & needs mechanical tweaks. If you help him figure it out again, you've got a true TOR arm.
  3. Wow, I had no idea how severe Realmuto's home/road splits were the past two seasons. Either Marlins Park is killing him, or he just has sucked there (maybe both?). At first glance at his stat line I thought maybe he's not worth ponying up for, but get this bat in Miller Park please. 2016 Home OPS: .643 2016 Road: .893 2017 Home: .627 2017 Road: .912 Those would be bordering on MVP type numbers, from the catcher position. EDIT: Just saw reillymcshane's post about his H/R splits on page 1 of this thread... oh well
  4. Our CF dilemma is solved. Ennder will be thrilled
  5. At this point I'd be surprised to see another team would give up anything of real value for Villar. If the goal in trading him is to free up payroll, then yes move him & hope you can hit on a high-upside but far away lottery ticket (like a teenage pitcher). If the goal is to get something of actual value, as opposed to more of a long shot, then I think you have to hold onto him & hope 2017 was an outlier much more than 2016 was. If you go back through his MiLB career numbers, he's always been a high-K, high-ish BB, high-ish SB & CS, lower AVG player with mediocre power/XBH. 2016 was by far his best professional season, and at the time IMO it did look like it was a young player putting everything together (in terms of the eye test). That made the start to last season all the more frustrating. It's just one case, & not nearly as common as you'd hope, but I think Segura's resurgence after Milwaukee can be a lesson learned. Both in that a young player who showed a flash of brilliance with a breakout season can recover his performance... but as well that it sometimes takes a change of scenery & coaching staff to occur. I personally hold out hope that the Brewers can help Villar rediscover his form, & not have to hope it works out for him with another club.
  6. Gun to my head, I agree I'd take Lynn over Arrieta. But I'd rather take neither.
  7. "Millennial baseball" sounds like something someone would say while also blaming "the cyber" & "the Facebook" in the same sentence. And it's really funny to me that he's complaining about something something Millennials for being the reason LA lost to a Houston team with lots of core players aged early to mid 20s. Damn millennial baseball! We'll have to try something else to beat those millennial baseball players we just lost to!
  8. Who's going to close if you use Knebel, asks Buck Showalter. god, no kidding. "But, but, 8th Inning Guy™..."
  9. So your season is on the line, Swarzak has been executing poorly,, & you DON'T go get your absolute best RP? Overall I've been happy with Counsell on balance, but that's inexcusable to just stick with Swarzak.
  10. Can Bill Hall p[ossess a currently active player]?
  11. No -- are you crazy? They're not irrational. I mean, it's not like he did something awful, like untucking his jersey after a game or something.
  12. He looks like Prince Fielder if Prince Fielder's genes had allowed him to grow a few inches taller. Prince was always ripped during his time in Milwaukee. He just has a shorter, squat physique. Thames looks like Prince's half-brother, whose mom was tall. I can't not see 'Tall Prince Fielder' when I watch Thames. I am loving Eric Thames. I spent the first few games in awe of how freaking shredded he is. He legitimately looks like an NFL linebacker. And some of his HRs have been off of pretty good pitchers' pitches. He's not just mashing mistakes right now.
  13. Great idea for a thread, EyeBlack! The Broxton comp I'd been thinking about in recent weeks (due to the lowering of his hands), at least in terms of offense, is Rickie Weeks.
  14. Pleskoff's articles are always so enjoyable to read. There's something about his enthusiasm for the game that just bleeds through his words. Great write-up & very encouraging about Erceg.
  15. Thanks for sharing that, Eye Black. It'll be interesting to see if Haniger is indeed a late bloomer
  16. Safeco has one of the smaller outfields in MLB. Nothing to see here...
  17. That's a head scratcher of a quote to me. I know he wants to praise the new players, but Haniger's entering his age-26 season, hasn't been particularly impressive at the higher levels of the minors overall (& keep in mind the western part of the PCL is notorious for greatly inflating offensive stats) and I never remember reading anything about him when he was with the Crew that indicated he could handle CF full time. I know he was praised a lot for his makeup & approach, & seems like a 'baseball guy's baseball guy'. But that quote just stuck out to me as being way embellished. I'll be interested to see how Segura plays at SafeCo. He's almost certain to regress from the career year he had in 2016, but SafeCo's spacious outfield should mean a lot of room for singles & gap shots. Even if his offense takes a dip from last year, his swing might fit that park pretty well.
  18. Yup because he was clearly never going to do anything here. Looks bad, but holding on to him would have been much worse. He was a lost cause here. If Diaz becomes a Top 50 prospect and becomes an above average offensive player I won't shed a single tear. I didn't bump the thread with any agenda. I'm genuinely happy to see Jean doing well. That's a hell of a season for a middle infielder. I liked this trade at the time, & am pretty confident in Diaz. That a back-end MLB SP was the thrown-in of the pieces we got back also speaks well of the deal. And I'm sure Arizona is happy too -- like patrickgpe noted, this is looking good for both clubs.
  19. One more bump for this thread. Segura up to .316/.363/.496/.859, with 20 HR, 40 2B, & should finish with at least 200 hits. Happy to see him have such a great year with AZ.
  20. Quick & easy rule of thumb on this... if you change the who/whom pronoun in your sentence to he/him, if you'd say "him", then you should use "whom" (the M at the end of the word being a good indicator) So I believe these examples are accurate/useful - He should be signed / Player X, who should be signed - We should sign him / Player X, whom Stearns should sign ... back to your regularly scheduled programming
  21. The Brewers are in an interesting position with Guerra. While I think it's clear they should sell high this offseason, they obviously don't have to. His value is hard to determine. But given his velocity & production this season, I'd want to see at least one top 50 prospect coming back for him. Even though I think most GMs will be of the mentality that they want to see Guerra perform for more than 120 innings, I think there's going to be a market for him with that sub-3.00 ERA. I'm looking at you, Dave Stewart!
  22. I edited in a note to clarify on this & also Zack Jones. Not sure why MLB.com would list it as a waiver claim. Thanks -- I'm glad people are discussing! Big whiff from me on Wagner (edited in now). Thanks for the catch. I'm going to leave Bradley off the list.
  23. Man, I totally forgot about Lopez, & that Devon White was a switch-hitter. Thanks BJ.
  24. In case anyone else was like me & hadn't checked in on how Luc was doing for the Rangers... .293/.364/.596/.960, with 9 HRs in 30 games! - (he had 13 HRs in 95 games with the Crew this season) - Awesome to see him doing so well, & part of the best record in the AL!
