  1. I'm going to go out on a limb & say you'll also create the 2018 Brewers Optimism Thread. Since we're doing crazy predictions!
  2. Thanks -- I had missed that. Interesting.
  3. "Again, I can't stress this enough, Wade Boggs is not dead."
  4. What mental issues? Is there a story here I missed?
  5. For 472 of his 551 PAs last season, Thames was in the #2 (399 PAs) or leadoff spot in the lineup. But he did have just a .180/.354/.290/.644 line with RISP, despite an overall line with runners on base of .236/.390/.489/.879. I think the biggest contributor to his lower RBI total was his batting order spot, even though he didn't hit well with men in scoring position.
  6. Just to make sure my opinion is clear, since I think I'm the one proposing that they aren't much more likely to sign an SP next year than this year, it isn't that if they don't spend this year they won't next year. My reasoning is that, from an outsider's perspective, if the SPs this year didn't move the needle, it doesn't seem like the ones next year likely would either, unless the rotation ends up being pretty bad, which I do not necessarily anticipate. I don't pretend to know budget wise what the Brewers really can or can't spend this year or on an ongoing basis. I think what you're saying here is very sound. And no, my post was not in response to yours. It's these definitive, cry baby comments I keep seeing where if we don't sign someone to fill out the rotation NOW, we never will. Those are comments people should truly be embarrassed by. Please ease up on the rhetoric. Disagreement is fine & healthy, but stay away from name-calling, even when not singling out a specific poster. Thanks!
  7. There is a definite top 5 and huge drop off for the bottom. Don't think the drop off is that huge. Arica has been steadily improving with the bat, and Villar bound to rebound, just a matter of how much. I never liked pitchers batting 8th, but it kind of makes sense with either Villar or Arcia batting in front of the top of the order. Kind of like Villar, catcher, pitcher, Arcia. Let Villar run and take chances with catcher pitcher up, then let Arcia hit before the top of the order. If he can hit .275 even that's a lot more RBI chances for Cain and Yellich. I think Arcia is going to take a good step forward with the bat this year. And actually, I think he already did last year. If you scratch his first two months from last season (which I know you can't do - but just for making the case of development), he put up about a .760 OPS. If you look back at his MiLB time, his 2017 MLB season line looks an awful lot like him moving up the ladder in the minors. In fact, it's almost identical to his 2016 AAA line, but with double the HRs. I think we have a very special player in Arcia.
  8. Oakland, Cleveland, Kansas City and San Diego all make logical sense to me. San Francisco could use an athletic CF to patrol that huge OF. Oakland has Boog Powell & SD has Manuel Margot. Neither one looks like a world beater, but both are young & inexpensive & I don't know that Broxton's a clear upgrade. SF signed Austin Jackson on a cheap 2-yr deal -- again, not great but would Broxton really be an upgrade? Cleveland has Bradley Zimmer, their 2014 1st rounder who hit well in MiLB & made his big league debut last year. KC actually looks like a good fit! Their OF looks like a mess. I wonder if there could be a deal there -- maybe Broxton+Santana? The Royals' depth chart currently lists Alex Gordon at CF & Jorge Soler at LF. Broxton/Santana are probably clear upgrades on both. Not trying to be contrarian, but I'd already looked at the non-KC teams thinking they might make sense. EDIT: second thought on OAK, it looks like Powell is a lefty bat they've shielded from LHPs. Maybe Keon would make sense there as the RH half of the platoon & 4th OF.
  9. What are some potential landing spots for Broxton? I glanced around the league quickly & came up pretty empty. Lots of the mid-level contenders seem to have comparable or better in-house CF options, & I'm not sure which major contenders Keon would start for.
  10. You only use one option per year, regardless of how many times you're shuffled back and forth. http://m.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/minor-league-options For this reason, I really wish "option year" was the go-to phrase for baseball journalists, not just "option"
  11. Latest update on Vogt: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2018/03/stephen-vogt-setback-shoulder-brewers-jett-bandy-options-catcher.html
  12. Good riddance.
  13. I wonder if this type of thing will cause more FAs next year to take lower than expected offers early in the FA period... What it looks like is happening is that the split between what FAs viewed as top-tier are getting compared to that next tier down. I still think top tier guys will get massive deals, but guys that are viewed as that step down (& lower) will probably be more inclined to take the first decent multi-year offer they get. Moustakas, Lucroy, Cobb, Arrieta, Lynn -- in years past, they were locks for at least 4- yr deals for a lot of money, even though the deals would pay them into their mid or late 30s. So next offseason all the big fish can still probably count on staggeringly lucrative long term deals, but everyone else will have to be careful. Seems like the distribution of FA dollars is getting to be a wider & wider gap.
  14. With Moustakas signing with KC, I've locked this thread. Please continue any Moustakas-related discussion in the thread in the ML forum -- viewtopic.php?f=63&t=36475
  15. One additional note on Villar -- his career BABIP is over .340, so while .373 is certainly high, it's not as big an outlier as it might sound when presented with no context. That said, I still like Walker. Villar has hit RHPs better than lefties on his career (including in 2016), & Walker has done better against LHPs. Walker on his career has a slash line against lefties very similar to Villar's overall 2017 line. I feel like there'll be PAs for Villar in a rotational role covering 2B vs LH SPs, spot starts at SS (maybe some 3B?), & pinch hitting.
  16. Why offer him $12MM? You might be bidding against yourself. In a standard negotiation you don't go in with your best possible at the start. You start with a lower figure and adjust from there.. Personally, I think starting with a MAJOR LEAGUE DEAL and $5MM plus incentives (multiple levels to get it to grow) might be all it takes now.. Fair point. I just thought 1/$12M might get an instant yes, and doesn't carry much risk for the Brewers. He's a good hitter & doesn't hurt you too much on defense. In context of this offseason, I guess I think $12M seems fair, but I acknowledge you might be able to get him for less. Really this is a guy you'd typically expect to get multiple year offers from multiple teams.
  17. I wonder if Walker would sign for 1yr/$12M at this point.
  18. Hah, well crap. Maybe some other posters missed it like me & it'll be 'like new' I put it at 80% that multiple other posters won't have seen the story until my post.
  19. I hope this hasn't been posted already, but here's a good read on Cobb from Fangraphs a couple weeks back. For a fan like me, who knew very little about Cobb, the piece does a nice job explaining his struggles post-TJ surgery. In short, he hasn't gotten the feel back for his previously nasty split-changeup. https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/can-alex-cobb-get-the-thing-back/ I'd love to see this pitch every fifth game (& judging from the swing, I think Cain would prefer having that pitch be in his own team's rotation...) --
  20. https://twitter.com/BleacherNation/status/966850326065278976/photo/1 The difference is drastic -- looks like a CGI effect in a movie more than actually real. I saw Schwarber on TV the other day. His weight loss is pretty dramatic. However, it seems as if that photo is slightly skewed or something. He has lost a lot of weight - but he doesn't look as thin as that photo. Here's an article with an embedded video of Schwarber. https://nesn.com/2018/02/cubs-kyle-schwarber-looks-like-different-person-after-offseason-weight-loss/ Even if the still photo is an extreme angle, he's still lost a ton of weight & looks in much better condition. He looks very fit in that video, to me.
  21. Apologies dude. no one meant anything mean by it. Just joshing. 100%
  22. I'm now unfortunately excited that we might get Cobb on a very reasonable deal.
  23. Anyone with ST pics from their own visit? Would be neat to see some.
