Final: @Iowa 8, Nashville 5 Late I-Cubs Rally Gives Sounds 8-5 Loss Maldonado, Boggs Each Club Two-Run Homers In Defeat Nashville Sounds DES MOINES, Iowa - The Nashville Sounds opened their season-ending road trip with an 8-5 loss, as the division-rival Iowa Cubs scored five runs in the seventh inning to come back and win on Monday evening at Principal Park. It was the 22nd loss on the road after leading this season, as Nashville (68-69) entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a 5-3 lead. Right fielder Caleb Gindl had three hits while fielder Brandon Boggs and catcher Martin Maldonado each hit two-run home runs in the loss. Boggs gave the Sounds a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning. After Gindl hit a two-out infield single, Boggs crushed a two-run homer over the left field wall, his ninth of the season. Iowa scored its first run in the next frame as Bryan LaHair singled home Lou Montanez, who bunted for a single and moved to third on a Ma[t] Gamel throwing error earlier in the frame. The Cubs scored two more runs in the next inning to go ahead, 3-2. Chris Robinson singled and moved to second as Brett Jackson was issued a two-out walk. Montanez then singled to right field to bring home Robinson from second while Jackson advanced to third and also scored as right fielder Caleb Gindl committed a throwing error. Maldonado put Nashville back in front at 4-3 with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. After Gamel walked with one out, Maldonado lined his seventh home run over the left field wall, his seventh of the season Nashville tacked on another two-run run in top of the seventh inning for a 5-3 advantage. Shortstop Edwin Maysonet was hit by Iowa starter Chris Rusin while trying to bunt. Second baseman Eric Farris then looped a double to center that allowed Maysonet to score from first base. Iowa quickly jumped back ahead at 8-5 for good in the bottom of the seventh, as the first five batters reached base against reliever Mike McClendon and hit for the cycle as a team. Former Vanderbilt star Ryan Flaherty led off with a pinch hit single on the first pitch and moved to third as Jackson doubled. Both runners scored as Montanez tripled to right field on the first pitch. Brad Snyder then singled on the first pitch to score Montanez for the tying run. After a mound visit from pitching coach Bill Castro, Bryan LaHair crushed the first pitch over the center field wall. Both starters recorded no-decisions on the evening. Nashville starter Amaury Rivas allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with three strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings for a no-decision. Rusin scattered nine hits for five runs in 6 2/3 innings. After stranding both inherited runners in the sixth inning, McClendon (5-5) surrendered five runs on five hits in the seventh for the loss. Sean Green worked one perfect inning in relief. Iowa reliever Hung-Wen Chen picked up his first win with 1/3 of an inning pitched. Blake Parker struck out three over two innings to convert his fourth save. The Sounds and I-Cubs continue their series at 6:35 pm CT on Tuesday night at Principal Park. Nashville right-hander Josh Butler (8-7, 5.12) will take the mound against Iowa righty Nick Struck (2-3, 4.85). Nashville Box Score Nashville Play-by-Play Nashville Gameday

I can't decide if this is good news about Josh Prince, or just bad news about the state of the Brewers' farm system: Gennett .299/.326/.395/.724 Prince .274/.320/.363/.683 Morris .273/.300/.459/.759 Ke. Davis .245/.318/.357/.675 Richardson .273/.316/.371/.687 People still have hopes for Davis's bat, & many think Richardson is an interesting 'project player'. If Prince hit about as well as those two, & iirc is well-regarded defensively at shortstop, does that mean the Brewers have a SS prospect again? It'll be interesting to see if Prince can hold his own at Huntsville next season.

The Stars jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first, thanks to doubles from Hainley Statia & Zelous Wheeler: Huntsville Top of the 1st Matt Cline walks. Hainley Statia doubles (13) on a fly ball to left fielder Jake Shaffer. Matt Cline scores. Sean Halton called out on strikes. Zelous Wheeler doubles (19) on a fly ball to right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang. Hainley Statia scores. Brock Kjeldgaard walks. Khris Davis pops out to second baseman Nick Franklin in foul territory. Steffan Wilson pops out to shortstop Gabriel Noriega. Two singles, a triple, & a homer for Jackson in their half of the inning put the Generals up 3-2. That lead would hold until the visitors came up in the 3rd, when Wheeler socked a two-run shot to vault the Stars in front. Despite a leadoff single & two doubles for Jackson in their half of the inning, the Generals were only able to tie the score... thanks to the relay combo of Steffan Wilson, Wheeler, & catcher Dayton Buller: Jackson Bottom of the 3rd Nick Franklin singles on a line drive to right fielder Brock Kjeldgaard. Chih-Hsien Chiang flies out to center fielder Lee Haydel. Vincent Catricala doubles (26) on a line drive to left fielder Steffan Wilson. Nick Franklin out at home on the throw, left fielder Steffan Wilson to third baseman Zelous Wheeler to catcher Dayton Buller. With Scott Savastano batting, Vincent Catricala steals (8) 3rd base. Brandon Bantz grounds into a force out, third baseman Zelous Wheeler to second baseman Matt Cline. Rich Poythress out at 2nd. Doubles from Haydel & Statia, & a single from Halton resulted in two more runs for Huntsville in the top of the 4th, pushing them up 6-4. The Generals got back-to-back doubles to lead off the home 4th, however, & plated three in the frame. Both teams' relievers shut out the offenses the rest of the way. The Stars had baserunners in the 6th, 8th, & 9th innings, but couldn't find one more big hit to tie the game. The final at-bat for Huntsville was probably the best shot at rallying back: Huntsville Top of the 9th Pitcher Change: Stephen Pryor replaces Brian Moran. Lee Haydel singles on a bunt ground ball to first baseman Rich Poythress. Matt Cline flies out to center fielder Brandon Haveman. Hainley Statia lines out to center fielder Brandon Haveman. Final: Memphis 7, @Nashville 5 Sounds Drop Home Finale To Redbirds, 7-5 Mat Gamel Homers, Drives In Two Nashville Sounds NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Nashville Sounds closed their 2011 regular season home slate with 7-5 loss to the cross-state-rival Memphis Redbirds on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium in the final of a five-game series. A crowd of 5,222 fans were on hand for the contest, bringing the Sounds' seasonal attendance total to 335,143, nearly 16,000 higher than last season. Nashville has seen an attendance increase in each of the past two seasons and has reached the 300,000-fan plateau for the 11th straight season. The loss by Nashville (68-68) combined with an Omaha win tonight moves the Sounds' elimination to one with eight games to play in the PCL American Conference Northern Division. Memphis outfielders Matt Carpenter and Andrew Brown each homered and accounted for all of the Redbirds' seven runs. Brown (3-for-3) hit a grand slam while Brown (3-for-4) had the go-ahead two-run homer in the seventh inning. Memphis began the game with 4-0 lead after Brown crushed a grand slam off Nashville starter Sam Narron deep over the wall in left field. Narron got the first two batters out in the inning before walking Nick Stavinoha and allowing base hits to Mark Hamilton and Carpenter. The grand slam was the Brown's 19th homer of the season and the Sounds seventh grand slam allowed as a team. The Sounds scored their first run as third baseman and Sounds MVP Mat Gamel tattooed a solo homer that landed somewhere in Brentwood. The long ball was Gamel's team-leading 28th of the season. Memphis added another run for a 5-1 lead in the third inning as Carpenter doubled home Stavinoha after opening the inning with a walk. The Nashville offense batted around and exploded for four, two-out runs to knot the contest at 5-5. The inning began with shortstop Edwin Maysonet lining a hard hit ball off the glove of Stavinoha in right field for a triple, who lost the ball in the lights. Memphis starter Brandon Dickson struck out the next two batters before giving up five consecutive base hits to shortstop Eric Farris, left fielder Jordan Brown, first baseman Erick Almonte, Gamel, and catcher [Martin] Maldonado. Five of the six hits in the inning went to right field. Memphis went back ahead for good at 7-5 in the top of the seventh inning. Right-hander Donovan Hand entered the game in relief of Narron and gave up a single to Hamilton and two-run jack to Carpenter, his 11th of the season. Narron allowed five runs on seven hits and three walks in six innings pitched for a no-decision. Hand (2-6) was issued the loss after giving up the run-run homer in seventh. Dickson was charged for five runs on seven hits in three innings. Cory Rauschenberger (5-2) picked up the win with three scoreless innings in relief. Victor Marte converted his 28th save of the season with a scoreless ninth inning. The Sounds embark upon their final road trip of the season, an eight-game trip to Iowa and Memphis. Nashville right-hander Amaury Rivas (7-12, 5.01) will take the mound for Monday's 7:05 pm series opener at Principle Park. The Cubs will send southpaw Chris Rusin (4-2, 3.96) to the mound. Nashville Box Score Gamel: 2-4, HR, 2 RBI (also charged with a fielding error at 3B) Almonte: 2-4, RBI Maysonet: 1-4, 3B Maldonado: 1-3, RBI Farris: 1-4 Brown: 1-4, RBI Narron: 6 IP, 7 H, 5 R/ER, 3 BB, 3 K Hand: 1 IP, 3 H, 2 R/ER, 1 BB, 0 K Zack Segovia: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 1 K Nashville Play-by-Play Nashville got a two-out single in the 8th from Erick Almonte, but Gamel struck out swinging to end that threat. Expectations for the St. Louis Series
TooLiveBrew replied to jjfanec's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
2 out of 3 in this series will be huge. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lgfy7x7iWc1qh5hg3o1_500.jpg We must break them. -
I was at the game today, & Nelson's FB was getting up to 95 with decent regularity*. It certainly looked like a flatter pitch than his 91-93 sinking FB that he was more effective with, but he was certainly popping the catcher's mitt. When he was throwing what I'm assuming was the straight(er) 4-seamer, his command of the pitch wasn't as good -- he was wilder, but he did generate some swings & misses with it iirc. Nelson seemed to be pretty fired up & intense from the very first inning today. After he struck out the side in the top of the 1st, he pumped his fist & seemed to be very focused and/or talking to himself as he walked off the mound. * I don't mean it was up at 95 a lot, but when it looked like he was throwing the flatter (4-seamer?), it was regularly at 94 or 95. He was throwing his normal sinking FB more often, of course.

Balls are probably also hit harder on average in the big leagues, but that's just a guess on my part. I don't expect Green to be stellar on defense, but I do think he'd be an upgrade over McGehee. I like Casey's arm, and his glove is solid -- not great, solid. Green will just cover more ground, and I think convert more outs overall.

I saw an Escobar jersey-shirt tonight & actually misread it "Escobra" at first. I definitely did a double-take. -
What I actually meant was overall defensive reports -- Green is regarded as being a guy that gets the most out of his tools, but is a good defender with average athleticism.

TooLiveBrew replied to brewmann04's topic in Transaction Rumors & Proposals
I would hope the F.O. can find a decent LOOGY; that has to be the type of player you could actually get off these waivers. -
I would argue Green's defense is closer to Braun-like at 3B. I can't say that I've heard he's anywhere near that bad. Solid glove, decent defender is usually how I see Green described. Have you seen him play a lot in person? I haven't, just wondering.

Final: @Orem 5, Helena 1 Helena Box Score Orem jumped on Brewers starter Kevin Shackleford in the first inning, & chased him after just 3.1 innings. Shackleford was hit for five singles, two doubles, & three earned runs (four total). The Owlz (not a typo, sadly) got six effective innings from starter Nick Maronde, who struck out seven, allowed six total baserunners, & one run. Relievers Juan Carlin & Michael Clevinger combined to shut out Helena in the final three innings. Max Walla went 2-2 with a stolen base; he also made a throwing error. Ben McMahan & Mike Nemeth singles were the only other hits on the day for Helena. Helena Play-by-Play I guess this is called manufacturing a run: Helena Top of the 5th Max Walla hit by pitch. Kenneth Allison strikes out swinging. With Michael Nemeth batting, Max Walla steals (5) 2nd base. Michael Nemeth singles on a fly ball to center fielder Chris Giovinazzo. Max Walla to 3rd. National League MVP 2011: Braun = MVP! (reply #318)
TooLiveBrew replied to jjfanec's topic in Milwaukee Brewers Talk
If Braun goes 30-30 on the season, that will have to get him the sportswriters' votes, right? He looks like the best choice anyway right now, but I think a 30-30 season is something writers will go gaga for. -
For reference's sake, Erick Almonte's slash line at Nashville this season (243 PA): .300/.387/.455/.842. Green's is .336/.413/.583/.997. Green's had one of the best offensive seasons of anyone at the AAA level, & will hit with the Brewers. If nothing else, this will be a solid LH bat off the bench. I would much rather see him get starts, though.
-
Good news, good move. And nice scoop, Stevo! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Looking forward to seeing Green get plenty of playing time at 3B. But I realize that's probably a pipe dream, as McGehee's leash is unlimited.

Final: @Wisconsin 19, Kane County 7 Hey, 19! Rattlers crack Cougars 19-7By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Kane County Cougars 19-7 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Field. Nick Ramirez homered and drove in five runs while TJ Mittelstaedt scored five times to lead the Timber Rattlers offense. Wisconsin (64-66 overall, 26-34 second half) scored six times in the first inning against Cougars starting pitcher Santiago Garrido. The first three batters of the inning reached to load the bases. Then, Ramirez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly. A walk to Chad Stang reloaded the bases. A walk to Brandon Macias forced in a run to make the score 2-0. Reggie Keen was next and he singled to right to drive in two runs. The throw went into third, but it was late to get Macias. Then, third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert tried to get Keen, who was headed to second base. The throw from Cuthbert went back into right field and both Macias and Keen scored on the play. Another error in the bottom of the second inning allowed a run to score and put the Rattlers up 7-0. But, Rattlers starting pitcher Brooks Hall could not hold the lead. The right-hander allowed five runs in the top of the third inning on a walk and five hits. The Cougars (61-68, 33-27) tied the game 7-7 in the top of the fourth. Yowill Espinal started the inning with a single. Angel Franco followed with a home run to right. Brian Garman relieved Hall after the home run. Garman would toss three scoreless innings and allow the Rattlers offense to respond. It did not take long. Alex Rivers, who relieved Garrido to start the third inning, walked Mittelstaedt to start the fourth. Cody Hawn followed with an RBI double. After Stang drew a one out walk, Macias followed with a two-run double. Keen was next and his single sent Macias home. Later in the inning, Franklin Romero, Jr. cracked an RBI triple to right-center and the Rattlers were back in front by a 12-7 score. Mittelstaedt walked and stole second to start the fifth inning against Cole White, the third Kane County pitcher of the night. Ramirez knocked in his second run of the night with a double. The Rattlers put the game away in the sixth inning as they sent ten men to the plate and scored five more runs. Keen started the frame with a walk and Joey Paciorek launched a home run over the wall in center. Chase Boruff, the fourth Kane County pitcher in the game, entered the contest later in the sixth with one on and one out. He gave up a single and a walk to load the bases. Ramirez followed with another double to pick up two more RBI. An RBI single by Chad Stang capped the scoring in the inning and the Rattlers were up 18-7. Maverick Lasker relieved Garman to start the top of the seventh inning and he tossed three innings and retired all nine batters he faced with five strikeouts. Lasker picked up his first professional save with his Friday night performance. Ramirez wrapped up the scoring in the game by blasting a home run to the beach in right-center to start the eighth inning. The homer was off Juan Graterol, the sixth and final pitcher of the night for the Cougars. Graterol started the game as the catcher for Kane County. Wisconsin just missed matching the franchise record for runs in a game. The Rattlers record of 20 runs in a game was originally set on April 28, 1996 against Lansing. It was matched on August 14, 2001 at Fort Wayne. The Timber Rattlers begin a four game series with the Cedar Rapids Kernels Saturday night at 6:35pm. Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez will play the first of his scheduled four rehabilitation appearances for the Rattlers on Saturday. Wisconsin has Del Howell (2-7, 5.61) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Cedar Rapids has PJ Jang (2-5, 3.97) as their scheduled starter. The final FOX 11 Fireworks display of the season is scheduled for after Saturday's game.
