  1. Both of those pitchers' (Mantei & Williamson) problems, though, were injuries. If Marmol has major arm injuries like they did, then yeah, he absolutely could flame out. So if you're guessing that's how Marmol's career will go, you're really just saying you think he's going to blow out his arm and/or shoulder. I can understand thinking that, but I don't think he's suddenly going to fall off a cliff just because.
  2. That doesn't really make any sense. Yes, his walk rate stinks, but his strikeout rate is otherworldly. He's given up 3 home runs in the past two seasons (151.2 IP). Three. With Wrigley as a home park. The guy is a studly reliever, bad walk rate or not.
  3. Rosenthal Bought out his final two arbitration seasons. '11: $3.2M '12: $7M '13: $9.8M Marmol had submitted a number of $5.65M for his 2011 arbitration case, compared to the Cubs' counter of $4.1M. I'm trying to glean some hope about the Weeks situation from this right now.
  4. I can't find that tweet on Rosenthal's page. Searched back to late January. EDIT: I see the same quote cited by USA Today... ahhh, here's the direct link to said tweet.
  5. Well, TLB, I picked Prince because I think he will put up a 6+ WAR season I think Weeks will too! And I should clarify that my 'the way these are selected' meant the actual team vote, not BF.net's vote
  6. My vote is Weeks, even though I expect it to go to Braun or Fielder because the way these are selected has nothing to do with who's actually the most valuable (usually goes to Mr. Most RBI)
  7. Breakout: Chris Dickerson Disappointment: Takashi Saito I don't think there are really that many unknowns on this team, so kinda hard for me to pick the breakout guy. Jon Lucroy is my other guess for breakout candidate, if that's allowed. I think he's going to turn what were strikeouts in 2010 into walks & balls in play/hits. I liked his pitch recognition, and he seemed to be able to stay alive at the plate... now time for the discipline to come around. Although I'm not sure if an AVG/OBP split of something like .275/.330 qualifies as breakout or not. I think Dickerson has a shot at being a solid leadoff option against righties. At least I'd really like him to be. Tough for me to pick the disappointment guy, too. I just worry Saito's health won't hold up.
  8. I submitted a sausage based item that didn't get a look... There is a local sausage producer that makes buffalo flavored chicken sausage (like 70% less fat to boot) and I suggested serving these on a bun with the usual wing condiments.. A cup of blue cheese dressing, and a crap load of celery sticks, which cost nothing, but is a great side... Wow. This would have been amazing.
  9. To be honest, I don't know why the Brewers don't throw him a million or so. Do they have to do it? No- but it would be a nice gesture to a guy who played very well the past two seasons, and has cost little to nothing. The Brewers already did McGehee the favor of getting him out of the Cubs organization & literally giving him a shot at a MLB career. They certainly don't owe him anything, and since he's under team control for the '11 season & three more, I don't see any reason to throw extra money at him right now unless they want to lock him up longer-term (which I'd also rather see them not do).
  10. That said, the comments about 'frustrations' and Milwaukee 'not being a fit', don't seem to make much sense because I've seen no evidence that the organization hasn't supported him 100%. I don't think whether the org. supported him or not is either called into question or relevant. Like I said, I took the "[not] the best fit" comment to be related to MIL personnel, and I think Brett is right in that sense. Imo you really have to be searching for how to blame the guy to take his quip about "frustrations" to be more than just normal commentary. And while I appreciate that anyone can be skeptical about a prospect, there have been very, very few questions about Lawrie's bat thus far. I think he's definitely going to hit at the MLB level, and for his sake & TOR's, I hope he can stick at 3B. If he has to move to corner OF or 1B, I think he's definitely going to have the bat for it.
  11. I feel pretty darn good about a Taylor/Gasser backcourt I do too, but I'm not convinced Jordan isn't heading to the NBA after this season.
  12. Thanks for all the hard work in compiling this, MH. Excellent read.

  14. Sorry, but he comes off to me as a complete tool. First he whines about catching, then he whines about playing 2nd- too lazy to show up in the fall to work on his game- I guess that he was too busy posing for his shirtless facebook pictures. I don't disagree that he's come off as & been reported to be a complete tool. But he didn't slam the org. in that interview, and I honestly don't remember him whining about changing postitions. He wanted to start at C since he thought he could fast-track to the bigs that way, and then decided to switch to 2B since I assume he realized he wasn't going to make it at C. I understand if people don't like him, I just don't think it's fair to the kid to say he's disrespecting the organization. He's been pretty classy about the whole trade imo.
  15. "It’s good for me to get into a new organization and it’s kind of like a fresh start for me. I don’t think Milwaukee was the best fit for me. I wish them luck going forward but I’m happy to be here." Yeah, totally disrespectful That's the only thing I could see from that article that could be (mis-)construed as him 'disrespecting' the Brewers. The Brewers have guys at corner infield & outfield that will be around for several more seasons, so Lawrie's right that a different organization without as many guys blocking him is a better fit.
  16. Awesome. Hope the rest of the road to recovery goes smoothly for you, Cordova family.
  17. Yeah, this hits the nail on the head for me. Good to hear the more positive talk recently from Melvin & Ash... trying not to get my hopes up too high, though.
  18. Nah, Sizemore had a lot more power. Plus he's already entering his age-27 season, so there's not a whole lot of realistic room for growth. I actually wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't ever post a better OBP than he did last season. His '10 line is probably roughly his ceiling at this point.
  19. I lived in Portland for a couple years, and went to many Beavers games. I never got the impression that there's this huge groundswell of support for a MLB franchise. The Beavers' attendance was poor, and the fans who grew up in Portland are basically all Mariners fans (think Iowa & the Cubs). Imo it would take an owner or ownership group that would breed enthusiasm and really generate support.
  20. I think they've been pretty suspect since Nate Silver left BP
  21. Really cool stuff. I'm a stadium geek, so thanks for sharing, jjgott
  22. Link (Cubs blog) The '11 PECOTA projections are out, and have the Brewers at 75-87. That would be two fewer wins than 2010, & one fewer win than the '10 pythag expected win total. Oh, and the Yankees are pegged for 100 wins. I know a lot of work goes into the projections, but at some point you have to ask 'why bother?'
  23. That said, you can change my title all you want, unless you pay me more, I don't care. I'd be surprised if being promoted to COO didn't also include a nice raise
  24. Glad for the Brewers, because (as others have said) this should be great value. Glad for Shaun, because... man -- this is his first big payday. Treat yourself to something awesome, Shaun!
