  1. Warning: Do not read this post if you don't want to get more pissed about Carlos Gomez, or if you don't want to imagine what X ellence will have to say... FanGraphs' & Disciples of Uecker's Jack Moore with a solid article, Hardy Under the Radar The fantastic range is why Hardy is rated highly by every defensive metric available today. Over about 4.5 full seasons, UZR rates Hardy as a +41 SS, DRS rates him as +38, and TotalZone rates him at +23. Regardless of which one you choose, Hardy has provided fantastic value as a solid glove shortstop, and both the scouting reports and the eye test back that up. Hardy might not have been as good as his +8 UZR suggests in such a small sample, but the fact that he put up 1.6 WAR in 375 plate appearances before factoring in defense is enough to merit a look. Throw in the fact that a +8 UZR in that sample is legitimately attainable for somebody with Hardy’s defensive prowess, and you have a shortstop that could arguably be the best remaining in the playoffs.
  2. Don't think this has been posted yet. Per TH, Randolph "disappointed" not to be considered. I emphasized that last line, since Randolph's work with Rickie Weeks has been invaluable. Hopefully those lessons have stuck with Rickie, and the next infield coach won't try to change him much. And, fwiw, TH also called the Brenly rumor "silly", so I think we can breathe a collective sigh of relief.
  3. How would a guy have been ahead of someone else if you "expanded the list", even though he (Peralta) already meets your list's qualifications?
  4. Not to nitpick, but we suspect he's carrying a gun. By the original story, it sounds like he was told "I have a gun", I don't know going back and reading that the gun was ever shown. Correct, but Adam also noted that at least one person from his neighborhood confirmed that they knew the kid did, in fact, have a gun. Nothing confirmed, but that's good enough for me to stay away.
  5. Or... the kid is known to carry a gun, which is what started this whole thing. Grow a spine? Or maybe get shot in your spine.
  6. Hoffman if he wants to stick in baseball could be an excellent pitching coach Hoffman made some comments about the possibility of coaching that lead me to believe he probably won't. At least not this coming season. Link
  7. He sounds like an excellent guy to at least interview. I'm not intensely familiar with Maddon, but from what I do know, he's a good manager.
  8. Even though I still expect another "baseball guy" hired to manage by Melvin, I did find this snippet from McCalvy's blog interesting: I'm not exactly sure how to read this, and that, but it looks like there's a sliver of a chance Melvin might not require a managerial candidate to be experienced this go-round. That would be interesting.
  9. Hart was poor to awful in RF, Weeks was solid at 2B. That's a pretty big difference.
  10. Take a look at all the discussion in this thread... There is no clear obvious choice. Weeks seems to have the most votes, but really, there are 4-5 guys that would be neck and neck as MVP. And a few more in a realistic discussion for MVP. If you examine it objectively, Weeks is the obvious choice as MVP -- he's that runaway candidate this season on the Brewers. Imo some subjectivity comes into a selection of Yo, but I can totally relate to it since the other starting pitching was so poor in comparison. If you only examine offense, and don't factor in defensive position or defensive performance, then yes there are 4 or 5 guys to choose from.
  11. He managed successful teams and no matter what there are always going to be a lot of people who think managers who manage winning teams are good. Like Doug Melvin
  12. More Melvin on Macha: "I admire Ken because he's a solid baseball guy. I brought him in here because he had a winning record." Someone order case after case of champagne -- a groundbreaking managerial hire is gonna be just around the corner this offseason!
  13. He was also the one who let Capuano rot in the bullpen for about two months as well this season. The guy coming back from his second TJ surgery. I don't hold this against Macha in the slightest.
  14. Sorry, but Axford is the clear winner for most valuable pitcher. No, he's not. It's "most valuable", not "most effective". Yo's 185 IP trump, dwarf, and otherwise overshadow Axford's ~58. And I love Axford. Gallardo just didn't have a great year. People are living off of his first half performance, but haven't been watching the last two months. And you're completely discounting an entire half of a season, which doesn't work at all. A season is 162 games long, not whatever sample size you find most convincing.
  15. This speaks for me. Just... wow.
  16. http://27.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_l7f23eDjFv1qb0fx9o1_500.jpg Everything I do is so innate, I knew it at least 8 years before you tried to teach it to me
  17. Weeks is the runner-up with an equally solid season statistics-wise. However, he never dominated the headlines the way Hart did in June. Weeks didn't butcher an easy/easier defensive position, and is a far rarer bat at his position. If you're choosing a position player, it's Weeks & then everybody else. EDIT: I know not everyone is going to be in love with WAR, but at the least it puts things into perspective when you factor in a player's positional value: 5.6 Weeks 4.0 Fielder 3.9 Braun 3.3 Hart 3.2 McGehee Fwiw, Gallardo comes in at 4.6, & Axford at 2.0 for pitching WAR
  18. It's probably Weeks, maybe Gallardo. The Axford mention is just... well, it's just not close to accurate.
  19. I would like them to hire someone who can evaluate pitching Like Peterson?
  20. http://www.baseball-refer...g=NL&year=2010#sprel
  21. The Brewers were also briefly mentioned in the very beginning/intro of last night's episode... but only that a team changed leagues, something that'd never happened before. Accompanied by a still image of Fernando Viña, and iirc Garner.
  22. And then he re-hired Boras after that... and fired him again earlier this month.
