  1. When he's trying to get every penny possible when he doesn't deserve it based on performance, it's going to anger fans. Ok, I get that. I just wish people would be more realistic. He turned in a .892 OPS in 2007 while making peanuts relative to his peers & his own production. And yes, that's how the system works. But you can't have that attitude about it when the player is being underpaid & not when he's seeking to make as much money as he can get... or seeking to be overpaid, I'm sure in the eyes of many fans. Is $4.5M or whatever even overpaying for a mid- or upper-.700s OPS? I'm honestly not sure. I know some people loathe these figures, but since I don't know where else to look for a quick comparison, FanGraphs has his production in 2008 worth $4.6M & last season's as $3.2M (& they include defense). So let's say we're reasonable & forecast a 2010 OPS of .750-.780. I'd have to guess that he's going to be roughly worth what he's after. EDIT: Xavier Nady signed with the Cubs for a 1 year, $3.3M deal. And he's 31 this year, bats RH, plays RF with what appears to be below-average defense, and is coming off an injury that forced him to miss the entire past season. Career OPS of .792, career OBP of .335 & SLG of .458. Basically as carbon-copy of Hart as you can get. If he were healthy last season, and still hit the FA market, there's no way I can see him not getting at least a deal of 1 yr./$4.5M, and that's at age 31.
  2. If he has a poor start to the season, I think there's a good chance he'll find himself on the bench, then cut and fighting for a job on a minor league contract somewhere next year. I can't take any more of the overstatements regarding Hart. While he's not a top-flight MLB RF, the idea that a guy in his prime-aged seasons would be fighting for a job on a MiLB contract is just absurd. As fans we really, really need to step back from that ledge. It's just way too easy to overreact to player performance, which always has & always will vary quite a bit from season to season. 'DFA Rickie Weeks!' ... 'Cut Dave Bush!' ... 'Cut Corey Hart!' Let's just say I'm grateful that we have a GM that doesn't make these types of overreacting moves. Go out and work your butt off in 2010 and get back to the .900+ OPS player you were, or Gamel is going to take your job. To me, this mentality is the problem, not Hart. He had a fantastic year in 2007, and instead of appreciating that & just how hard it is to consistently be a good hitter in MLB, people are getting all over Hart for not fulfilling their own relatively unrealistic expectations of him. Each of the four projections that FanGraphs lists on player pages has Hart turning in a line of roughly a .330 OBP/.460 SLG/.790 OPS. So yeah, let's go ahead & just cut him if he starts the season slow.
  3. Solid pickup for Cincy. They're definitely a (pesky) force to be reckoned with in 2010. We'll just have to hope for some Dusty Baker magic to help neutralize their talent.
  4. Melvin really (imo) stepped up to take some heat off of Hart on his ESPN radio interview yesterday. Granted, a player's agent essentially does what the player tells him to do, but I found it interesting that Doug made a point of mentioning
  5. Listening to Melvin on ESPN 540AM from yesterday (via Mass Haas's link in the audio thread) right now. I noticed something Melvin said about the outfield while discussing Edmonds... As of yesterday, it appears that Doug Melvin's starting outfield doesn't vary much from what we all assumed it would be immediately after the Hardy-Gomez trade. I think we can relax a bit about this (for now).
  6. I took the comment "doesn't know if that will happen" to mean Melvin didn't know if Gamel would get the job at 3B in MLB. I could easily be wrong, though.
  7. http://www.zuguide.com/image/Benicio-Del-Toro-Fear-and-Loathing-in-Las-Vegas.13.jpg I have no idea what you mean...
  8. An 8x Gold Glove CF who's lost a step or two still should be a league-average CF defensively. He was below-average in 2007, disastrously bad in '08, & hasn't played in a year. I don't think it's out of line at all to expect him to continue to be well below average in terms of defense.
  9. That's if Madison does absolutely nothing to help with their bus schedules. If there were a stop like that, and the city did nothing to better accommodate arrival times with higher-frequency or better-timed bus runs, then yes I agree it wouldn't be all that appealing.
  10. Aren't the notes on Davis were that he has the potential to hit a ton? Not that Callis said he wouldn't, but iirc the upside on his bat is supposed to be really high.
  11. You don't seriously believe portable heaters would solve the problem of heating that gigantic space, do you?
  12. If I can take a train at 110 mph from Milwaukee to Madison, you'd better believe I'd choose it ahead of a car. And getting people out of cars is a *good* thing.
  13. Interesting points, bg71. What kind of weight does Wolf's significantly better (than Looper's) K-rate play? Would that make him less likely to get eaten alive by MP?
  14. "I talked to someone who saw Edmonds recently and said he's in great shape." I'm guessing "someone" = someone on the Brewers' F.O./scouting staff
  15. In what way could Wolf be Looper 2.0?
  16. You can just catch a bus from the Madison airport. I don't know the logistics of how the line is being run relative to Madison, but I don't see any problem with making the stop at MSN.
  17. It shouldn't... the monetary value in his contract seems largely tied to performance incentives. He might prefer playing in CF, but I'm sure he'd prefer making more money than not. I just hope the Brewers aren't stupid enough to cater to the whims of a 40-yo that hasn't played since 2008.
  18. I'm sure Edmonds still considers himself a CF, it'd be hard not to after playing your career there. On top of that, his $$ value is higher in CF. However, I hope the Brewers are intelligent enough to recognize that he is not a CF anymore, and should only be an emergency option there.
  19. I assume this will be a part of the Chicago to Minn line the government gave funding for I'm 99% sure this is correct
  20. If Gomez is getting benched against RHP, Gerut should be in CF, not Hart.
  21. America is long overdue for these types of projects. And yes, there are plenty of people that are willing & happy to utilize it -- some even with the environment in mind. Kudos to the gov't. for taking this initiative.
  22. I really hope Edmonds is viewed as a corner option, & not a CF option. I think he was always a bit overrated in center, and at age 40 there's just no way he'd be a plus defender. He's probably not even average at this point. However, he probably would be able to be an avg. corner OF defender. This is all about RF, imho. I really agree with the notion that Hart could be dealt by ST.
  23. CHONE has 9 guys projected to have ERAs below 5 (but it also has Volquez throwing 115 IP, which is probably too high for a guy due back mid-season from TJ surgery). Here are the best CHONE slash line projections by position -- C Hernandez: .257/.329/.405/.734 1B Votto: .303/.381/.528/.909 2B Phillips: .272/.324/.443/.767 3B Rolen: .275/.350/.430/.780 SS Cozart: .246/.319/.365/.684 LF Balentien: .265/.342/.487/.829 CF Heisey: .276/.332/.446/.778 RF Bruce: .286/.351/.539/.890 Rolen is really the only hitter there I think of as an injury risk (though I'm not familiar with Cozart or Heisey). I think there's a good chance the Brewers, Cubs, & Reds are all pretty close.
  24. Those BP projections are awful. I read somewhere that they were off by an average of 8.5 games last season. I can't take this year's projected standings seriously at all. Just look at the runs projections... the Brewers led the NL in runs allowed last season at 818. Now in 2010 we're going to give up 895? Ummm, yeah -- just like how the Royals as a team are going to hit .279/.346/.424/.770 And weren't the PECOTA projections (BP) beaten by just about every main projection system last season? I thought I read that too.
  25. I agree on Parra, but it wouldn't exactly surprise me honestly if he just started trusting his stuff more. I do think he's the Brewer with the best shot at a colossal turnaround from 2009, though.
