  1. It'd probably be nice to update the $ figure in the thread title. Seems the $10M guaranteed is reported everywhere.
  2. It frustrates me that when Ben was really good, the rest of the team was lousy. And then when the team became really good, Ben couldn't stay healthy. It just seems like his whole era with the Brewers never worked out the way any of us wanted. It's one of the great disappointments in Brewers history (in my opinion) If it makes you feel any better, there's no way the '08 team gets to the postseason without his excellent 198.1 IP
  3. I'm just so glad he's not a Brewer anymore so the exposure to this kind of stuff is reduced.
  4. I'm not sure when the official decisions are made, but from that list I'd say that the starting rotation would be very strong. Kentrail Davis is a guy that I think has the chance to turn himself into a top hitting prospect for the Crew with a strong 2010. D'Vontrey Richardson is another exciting guy in terms of potential. Here are the guys that show up on BF's latest Power 50: P Arnett (5) OF Davis (8) P Odorizzi (13) P Heckathorn (16) P Bucci (23) OF Richardson (24) P Howell (25) SS Prince (30) P Lasker (34) P Nieves (41) 2B Dysktra (43) P Fredrickson (45) OF Komatsu (47) Apologies if I missed anyone or mis-ranked anyone

  6. Turns out it was a great negotiating tool, but imo everything hinged on that throwing session. I'm sure Ben worked his butt off for that.
  7. All the 'cut Bush' stuff this offseason has really gotten old. Cut Weeks while you're at it, he didn't even play most of last season!
  8. I like the move by Beane. I hope things work out for Benny... just not with the Cubs or Cards http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  9. I can't find anything on Smoltz announcing his retirement. Not saying you're wrong, necessarily, but a link would be useful.
  10. I agree on Tejada, Invader, and moving Atkins to 1B does seem to fall in with paying more attention to defense (that or DHing him; I'm not familiar enough with the O's to know who their DH might be)
  11. That would be a great move by Beane, but I'd look to flip Sheets asap once/if he puts out a good track record of performances earlier on. I wouldn't want to get burned by an injury if I waited until near the deadline to flip him.
  12. Please, please, please, please... I just hope he can realistically get back by the Big Ten tourney. It would seem to be incredibly valuable to be able to shake the rust off in at least one game there before the Big Dance.
  13. I was under the impression that Androstenedione wasn't classified as a steroid when McGwire was using it in the '98 season. That's what I was referring to with my attempt at humor.
  14. Your facts anger & bore me! Whoops.
  15. Second, they are not going to throw someone who's never played a position to the wolves at the major league level. They did it with Braun, who was an even worse defender at 3B.
  16. The offense just too often breaks down into everyone but the one guy posting up not moving from their spot at the three-point arc. Thank goodness Jordan Taylor decided to start driving, and his pair of triples that absolutely bailed out the Badgers' offense near the end of regulation were just mammoth. My love/hate relationship with Keaton Nankivil continues. I love him even more & hate him even more than I did prior to this game.
  17. But McGwire used his PEDs before they were specifically banned. That's the classy way.
  18. It's really just not a good show. I tend to be pretty critical of network TV, but I can't say I find anything about Bones compelling or intriguing. I'm also shocked that Grey's Anatomy draws better than 30 Rock or The Office.
  19. If Rickie's 21.9 UZR/150 in '09 was a reflection of his improvement, and not just fluky, then he's absolutely an upgrade. However, as much as I'd like to believe he's improved that much, I just find it hard to believe. At this point I agree with trwi7 that they're probably about equal value on defense.
  20. Wow, I had no idea how brutal Tejada was away from MMP last season: .283/.313/.395/.708 ... all with his road BABIP within 4 points of his career BABIP. Yikes.
  21. To me it's simple. If Melvin has a problem with who the manager is putting in the rotation, he has a very blunt conversation with his manager, and erases any gray area as to who will be in & out. While I personally loathed how Gamel was handled last season, Melvin never seemed to think anything was wrong (at least in his quotes to the media).
  22. I think the effect SBs have on pitchers is vastly overrated. Pitchers always get hit harder with men on base (basestealers or not), and iirc Baseball Between the Numbers wasn't able to find anything statistically significant in examining the effect good basestealers have on pitchers. And while stealing more bases won't necessarily equate to more runs, it certainly won't hurt. Not to mention we have a lot of guys (Weeks, Hart, Escobar, Gomez) that are capable of doing it, so why not try? Gomez is a guy I would definitely not want green-lighted unless he makes a drastic improvement in his basestealing efficiency. But I'd agree that Weeks, Hart, & Escobar should all get a pretty loose rein. As long as the success rate is over 75%, I try not to let CSs piss me off too much http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'd love to see Weeks run more, personally, but batting in front of Fielder & Braun complicates things a bit in that respect.
  23. Didn't Melvin recently make a comment to the effect of 'salary will not determine rotation status'? I thought he did, and at the time I read that to mean precisely that Suppan is as likely to drop out of the rotation as anyone.
  24. NBC making a mistake? Surely not.
  25. Spaceman Bill Lee had some pretty candid comments regarding McGwire's situation & the whole PED abuse uproar. Link I personally agree with his take that this round of juicing was no different, conceptually, from the widespread use of greenies (for example).
